Projeto Final para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Engenharia Informática e de ComputadoresThe electric vehicle use as a reliable and eco-friendly means of transportation has in creased rapidly over the past few years. When choosing an electric vehicle, its driving range capacity is a decisive factor to be taken into account as it minimizes driver’s anxiety while driving. An electric vehicle driving range depends on multiple factors that must be taken into account when attempting its prediction. Machine learning has become a widely used approach for highly complex problems, in which eRange prediction, being one of them, provides benefits such as becoming more accurate, the more the user drives his vehicle. This thesis compares, through standard metrics, implementations of machine learn ing based regression models (Linear regression and Ensemble Stacked Generalization) when training with publicly available datasets. The results of this work show the effects of different training sample sizes on machine learning model’s accuracy and training time, presenting more favorable results for the Linear Regression algorithm, as the algorithm was more resistant to overfitting for commonly trained data. The results can be replicated with the implemented Python application, allowing for future testing and study of the topic. Utilizando a aplicação desenvolvida em Python, é possível a replicação resultados, promovendo estudos fu turos no tema.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Phase separation versus supersolid behavior in frustrated antiferromagnets

We investigate the competition between spin-supersolidity and phase separation in a frustrated spin-half model of weakly coupled dimers. We start by considering systems of hard-core bosons on the square lattice, onto which the low-energy physics of the herein investigated spin model can be mapped, and devise a criterion for gauging the interplay between supersolid order and domain wall formation based on strong coupling arguments. Effective bosonic models for the spin model are derived via the contractor renormalization (CORE) algorithm and we propose to combine a self-consistent cluster mean-field solution with our criterion for the occurrence of phase separation to derive the phase diagram as a function of frustration and magnetic field. In the limit of strong frustration, the model is shown to be unstable toward phase separation, in contradiction with recently published results. However, a region of stable supersolidity is identified for intermediate frustration, in a parameter range not investigated so far and of possible experimental relevance.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures.

______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTquality, and has also a significant impact on energy use. The Technical Regulations for Energy Efficiency Labeling of Residential Buildings (RTQ-R) was published in Brazil in August 2010, as a part of INMETRO’s Brazilian Labeling Program. This article presents the method and the results that produced the indications related to the daylight bonus that are established in that Regulation. The method included 336 computer simulations using the software DaySim, in order to investigate the variables that influence daylight performance, specifically regarding room depth and solar protection. The simulations were performed for 11 Brazilian cities, covering 11 different geographical latitudes and four bioclimatic zones (ZB 1, ZB 3, ZB 4 and ZB 11). The results generated guidelines on room depth limits, which were adopted as parameters for granting daylight bonus in the RTQ-R regulations

Learning and memory with neuropathic pain: impact of old age and progranulin deficiency

    Get PDF
Persistent neuropathic pain is a frequent consequence of peripheral nerve injuries, particularly in the elderly. Using the IntelliCage we studied if sciatic nerve injury obstructed learning and memory in young and aged mice, each in wild type and progranulin deficient mice, which develop premature signs of brain aging. Both young and aged mice developed long-term nerve injury-evoked hyperalgesia and allodynia. In both genotypes, aged mice with neuropathic pain showed high error rates in place avoidance acquisition tasks. However, once learnt, these aged mice with neuropathic pain showed a significantly stronger maintenance of the aversive memory. Nerve injury did not affect place preference behavior in neither genotype, neither in young nor aged mice. However, nerve injury in progranulin deficient mice impaired the learning of spatial sequences of awarded places, particularly in the aged mice. This task required a discrimination of clockwise and anti-clockwise sequences. The chaining failure occurred only in progranulin deficient mice after nerve injury, but not in sham operated or wildtype mice, suggesting that progranulin was particularly important for compensatory adaptations after nerve injury. In contrast, all aged mice with neuropathic pain, irrespective of the genotype, had a long maintenance of aversive memory suggesting a negative alliance and possibly mutual aggravation of chronic neuropathic pain and aversive memory at old age

This study evaluated the effects of physical activity on blood, growth, carcass, and meat quality of finishing Alentejano (AL) pigs. Pigs, reared from ~87 to 160 kg in individual pens (no exercise area, NE group, n = 9) or in an outdoor park (with exercise area, WE group, n = 9), were fed commercial diets (85% ad libitum). WE pigs were in a park (~400 m2) with a feeding area separated from the drinking area with an automatic waterer, forcing pigs to walk at least 800 m daily. Blood samples were obtained during the trial (weeks 2, 11, and 18) and at slaughter. The left-side carcass was submitted to commercial cuts, and samples from loin, tenderloin, and dorsal subcutaneous fat (DSF) were analyzed. Plasma urea in WE pigs was higher in weeks 2 and 11, while cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol and LDL- to HDL-cholesterol ratios, and cortisol were lower in weeks 11 and 18. Final weight and average daily gain were higher and feed conversion ratio lower in WE pigs. DSF thickness and carcass weight were higher in WE pigs, leading to higher carcass yield. Finally, loin and tenderloin from WE pigs presented higher total protein content. These data show that allowing physical activity affects metabolism, growth, and carcass and meat quality of AL pigs

The Forgotten Library of the Botanist Friedrich Welwitsch (1806-1872)

The National Museum of Natural History and Science (MUHNAC/Museums of the University of Lisbon, Portugal) houses a forgotten treasure: part of the scientific and working library of the Austrian botanist Friedrich Martin Joseph Welwitsch (1806-1872), known worldwide for his work on Angolan flora. The museum’s collections began to be reorganized in 2012, enabling the library to be re-assembled, and 198 volumes were found. Although a great deal has already been written on the Austrian botanist, this paper seeks to explore the international scientific network to which he belonged, based on an analysis of his private library, correspondence, and working notes

Eyelid Apocrine Hidrocystomas in a Cat

    Get PDF
Background: Eyelid apocrine hidrocystoma (AH) is a benign cystic lesion originating from the glands of Moll. These eyelid lesions are rare in cats and there are few cases reported in the literature. The aetiopathogenesis of AH is unknown and the lesion has been interpreted either as proliferative adenomatous tumour or as retention cyst. Defnitive diagnosisrequires biopsy with microscopic examination. Treatment options for eyelid AH include surgical excision, drainage through aspiration, cryosurgery with liquid nitrogen and chemical ablation. The aim is to report a case of bilateral multiple AH of the eyelids in a cat that was successfully treated with surgical excision.Case: A 5-year-old male Himalayan cat was referred to the Ophthalmology Section in the Veterinary Clinics Hospital of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil with a history of pigmented masses in both eyes that had been progressively enlarging over a 1-year period. Ophthalmic examination revealed two cysts on themedial canthus at the eyelid margin in both eyes. In the left eye was observed mild blepharospasm and lacrimation. Cysts were soft, smooth, round and flled with a dark brownish pigment. The remainder of the ophthalmic examination was unremarkable. Surgical excision of the cysts was indicated with a safety margin. The surgical procedure was performedunder inhalation anaesthesia using an operating microscope. A V-shaped, full-thickness excision of the eyelid containing the cyst was performed. The eyelids were closed with two layers of sutures. No complications were noted during surgery. Microscopic examination revealed cystic dilatation of the sweat glands with a large amount of eosinophilic secretion. EyelidAH was diagnosed based on the results to confrm the diagnosis. The cat recovered and was discharged the following day. The postoperative treatment involved the administration of tramadol (2 mg/kg, PO, q 12 h) daily for 3 days. After surgery, the cat had no signs of ocular discomfort. After three years, no recurrence has been observed.Discussion: AH is a benign tumour derived from Moll’s glands. The exact aetiology of AH is unknown. A breed-specifc predisposition among Persian cats has been suggested. In the present case, the ophthalmic examination revealed periocular masses brownish to black, round, soft, and fluid-flled. Multiple pigmented nodules involving the skin of the lower eyelids were observed. In the current case, the cat was of the Himalayan breed and was 5 years old with multiple AH in both eyelids. In terms of clinical features, this case was similar to previous ones reporting eyelid AH in cats. Normally, a defnitive diagnosis is confrmed through histopathology after excisional biopsy. In the current case, diagnose was made on the basis of the clinical fndings, history, and results of histological examination. Treatment options for eyelid AH include surgical excision, aspiration, cryosurgery and chemical ablation with trichloroacetic acid. Surgical removal of the cysts was performed in the current case. Histopathologic examination revealed cystic dilatation of the sweat gland with large amount of eosinophilic secretion. The sutures were removed one week after surgery. Periodic evaluations were conducted and there were no signs of recurrence after three years. In the present case, surgical excision was effective in the treatment of eyelid AH in a cat. Keywords: lid, cystic adenomas, feline
