Is a midâlevel dental provider model acceptable to potential patients?
ObjectiveThis study aims to assess patient attitudes toward midâlevel dental providers, known as dental therapists (DTs), by surveying those likely to be their patients. The recent adoption of accreditation standards by the Commission on Dental Accreditation has reignited a debate surrounding the stateâbyâstate legalization of DTs in the United States; while the dental profession is divided on DTs, it is important to understand how potential patients may view the DT model.MethodsA questionnaire that asks about oral health experience, and comfort with the model of a dually trained dental therapistâhygienist, based on a provided definition, was administered to 600 patients and their waiting room companions at a large urban universityâbased dental clinic.ResultsForty percent of respondents indicated they would be comfortable being treated by a DT for all 7 of the procedures referenced, and over 75% were comfortable with each of 5 procedures. Having caps or crowns placed was the only treatment about which respondents were evenly divided. Factors associated with greater odds of comfort with various procedures include being uninsured and being under the age of 65. Uninsured patients were 1.5 to 2 times more likely than privately insured patients to accept a DT.ConclusionsThe introduction of midâlevel dental providers is a strategy that those lacking regular care appear on the whole to be comfortable with.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/134205/1/cdoe12230-sup-0001-AppendixS1.pdfhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/134205/2/cdoe12230.pdfhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/134205/3/cdoe12230_am.pd

Distributed k-core view materialization and maintenance for large dynamic graphs
Cataloged from PDF version of article. In graph theory, k-core is a key metric used to identify subgraphs of high cohesion, also known as the âdenseâ
regions of a graph. As the real world graphs such as social network graphs grow in size, the contents get richer and the
topologies change dynamically, we are challenged not only to materialize k-core subgraphs for one time but also to maintain
them in order to keep up with continuous updates. Adding to the challenge is that real world data sets are outgrowing the
capacity of a single server and its main memory. These challenges inspired us to propose a new set of distributed algorithms
for k-core view construction and maintenance on a horizontally scaling storage and computing platform. Our algorithms execute
against the partitioned graph data in parallel and take advantage of k-core properties to aggressively prune unnecessary
computation. Experimental evaluation results demonstrated orders of magnitude speedup and advantages of maintaining k-core
incrementally and in batch windows over complete reconstruction. Our algorithms thus enable practitioners to create and
maintain many k-core views on different topics in rich social network content simultaneously
PTPN22 gene polymorphism in Takayasu's arteritis
Objective. Takayasu's arteritis (TA) is a chronic, rare granulomatous panarteritis of unknown aetiology involving mainly the aorta and its major branches. In this study, genetic susceptibility to TA has been investigated by screening the functional single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of PTPN22 gene encoding the lymphoid-specific protein tyrosine phosphatase. Methods. Totally, 181 patients with TA and 177 healthy controls are genotyped by PCR-RFLP method for the SNP rs2476601 (A/G) of PTPN22 gene. Polymorphic region was amplified by PCR and digested with Xcm I enzyme. Results. Detected frequencies of heterozygous genotype (AG) were 5.1% (9/177) in control group and 3.8% (7/181) in TA group (P = 0.61, odds ratio: 0.75, 95% CI: 0.3, 2.0). No association with angiographic type, vascular involvement or prognosis of TA was observed either. Conclusion. The distribution of PTPN22 polymorphism did not reveal any association with TA in Turkey. Š The Author 2008. Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the British Society for Rheumatology. Aktivnost arginaze u ovarijskim strukturama krava ĹĄvicarske smeÄe pasmine i njezinih kriĹžanaca.
Arginase is the last enzyme of the urea cycle. It catalyses the hydrolysis of L-arginine to L-ornitine and urea. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of arginase activity in ovarian structures such as: Graaf follicles, GF (Medium and Large size, M- and L-size), Corpus Haemorrhagicum (CH), and various types of Corpus Luteum (CL) such as: cyclic CL (CCL), 2-4 month pregnancy CL (2-4 MCL) and 4-7 month pregnancy CL (4-7 MCL). Ovarian tissues of 62 cows (7-10 years old and Brown Swiss or its cross-breeds), collected from a local slaughterhouse, were used as material. The materials were divided into 6 experimental groups, as follows: MGF group (n = 7), LGF group (n = 21), CH group (n = 7), CCL group (n = 6), 2-4 MCL group (n = 9) and 4-7 MCL group (n = 12). Arginase activities were measured as 0.056 Âą 0.017, 0.100 Âą 0.016, 2.517 Âą 0.521, 0.827 Âą 0.190, 0.674 Âą 0.106 and 0.833 Âą 0.093 U/mg protein in all groups, respectively. Arginase activity in the CH group was significantly higher than that in the CCL, 2-4 MCL and 4-7 MCL groups (P<0.001). The lowest enzyme activity was in the MGF and LGF groups. Hence, it was concluded that the arginase enzyme might play a crucial role in cell division, proliferation and differentiation in the ovarian tissues (especially the CH) of mature cows. Materijali su bili podijeljeni u 6 pokusnih skupina kako slijedi: MGF skupina (n = 7), LGF skupina (n = 21), CH skupina (n = 7), CCL skupina (n = 6), 2-4 MCL skupina (n = 9) i 4-7 MCL skupina (n = 12).
Effect of six weeks aerobic training upon blood trace metals levels
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of 6-week aerobic exercise program upon blood Zn and Cu levels. There were 12 male university students with an average age of 21.67 ¹ 0.89 years and no regular training habits participated in the study. The participants were subjected three days a week 1 hour a day continuous running program on treadmill with an intensity of 60-70% for a period of six weeks. They were fed with zinc and copper free diet throughout the study and it was made sure that they were not using copper or zinc containing vitamin tablets. The differences between the pre and post study periods were found to be statistically significant as regards to both resting and maximal loading conditions (p<0.01). The pre and post training max VO2 values were also found to be positively correlated with the copper and zinc levels in blood. Both the copper and zinc blood levels were significantly decreased after 6-week aerobic training period p<0.05. Š Neuroendocrinology Letters
