The Impact of Capital Structure on Firms Operating Performance

This study seeks to investigate the impact of capital structure on firm performance by analyzing the relationship between operating performance of Malaysian firms, measured by return on asset (ROA) and return on equity (ROE) with short-term debt(STD), long-term debt (LTD) and total debt (TD). ). Four variables found by most literature to have an influence on firm operating performance, namely, size, asset grow, sales grow and efficiency, are used as control variables. This study covers four major sectors in Malaysian equity market which are the consumers,industrials, trading or services and properties sectors. 240 firms were identified as the sample firms and their financial data from the year 2002 through 2007 are used as observations for this study, resulting in a total number of observations of 1440. A series of regression analysis were executed for each model, where either one of the capital structure proxies is included in each analysis. Lag values for the proxies were also used to replace the non lag values in order to ensure that any extended effect of capital structure on firm performance is also examined. The study finds that only long term debt has significant relationship with ROA but not with ROE. The analysis with lagged values shows that non of lagged values for total debt, short term debt and long term debt has significant relationship with performance. The study therefore concludes that capital structure does not affect operating performance of Malaysian firms

Efikasi Kendiri Keusahawanan, Akhlak Keusahawanan dan Kesediaan Penerapan Elemen Keusahawanan: Perbezaan antara Guru Pelatih RBT dan Bukan RBT: Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy, Entrepreneurial Morality and Readiness to Apply Entrepreneurial Elements: Differences between RBT and Non-RBT Pre-Service Teachers

Malay: Reka Bentuk dan Teknologi (RBT) merupakan bidang pengajian di Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) yang mewajibkan guru pelatih mengambil kursus keusahawanan. Guru pelatih selain bidang RBT memperoleh elemen keusahawanan melalui kaedah penerapan dalam kursus-kursus lain. Kajian ini adalah untuk menilai perbezaan efikasi kendiri keusahawanan, akhlak keusahawanan, dan kesediaan penerapan elemen keusahawanan antara guru pelatih bidang RBT dan bukan bidang RBT. Reka bentuk kajian adalah tinjauan deskriptif melalui pendekatan kuantitatif menggunakan instrumen soal selidik dengan skala likert 5 mata yang ditadbir kepada 176 orang guru pelatih tahun akhir dari dua buah IPG. Data yang dikumpul daripada responden telah dianalisis secara diskriptif dan inferensi menggunakan perisian SPSS Versi 26.0. Dapatan deskriptif menunjukkan efikasi kendiri keusahawanan, akhlak keusahawanan, dan kesediaan penerapan elemen keusahawanan berada pada skor min yang tinggi. Dapatan inferensi bagi perbezaan antara guru pelatih RBT dengan guru pelatih selain bidang RBT pada nilai signifikan p < 0.05 pula menunjukkan bahawa tidak terdapat perbezaan yang signifikan bagi ketiga-tiga konstruk. Implikasi kajian ini, walaupun tahap skor min semua konstruk adalah tinggi, perlu dikenal pasti mengapakah masih wujud masalah guru yang tidak memiliki efikasi kendiri keusahawanan, akhlak keusahawanan dan kesediaan penerapan elemen keusahawanan di lapangan. Analisis dan kajian lanjutan dicadangkan untuk menilai hubungan dan pengaruh antara efikasi kendiri keusahawanan dan akhlak keusahawanan dengan kesediaan penerapan elemen keusahawanan. Selain itu faktor-faktor selain efikasi kendiri keusahawanan dan akhlak keusahawanan boleh dikenal pasti hubungannya dengan kesediaan penerapan elemen keusahawanan.   English: Design and Technology (RBT) is a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) discipline at the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG). It requires pre-service teachers to take entrepreneurship courses. The other pre-service teachers acquire entrepreneurship elements through courses that apply entrepreneurial elements. This study aims to evaluate differences in entrepreneurial self-efficacy, entrepreneurial morality, and readiness to apply entrepreneurial elements between RBT and non-RBT pre-service teachers. Survey design being implemented for this study through quantitative approach using questionnaires with a 5-point likert scale. The questionnaires assigned to 176 final year trainee teachers from two IPGs. The data collected from the respondents were descriptively and inferentially analyzed using SPSS Version 26.0 software. Descriptive findings show that entrepreneurial self-efficacy, entrepreneurial morality, and readiness to apply entrepreneurial elements are at high mean score. The differences between RBT and non-RBT pre-service teachers at a significant value of p < 0.05 showed that there was no significant difference for three constructs. The implication of this study necessitates to further identify the actual problems of teachers’ lack of entrepreneurial self-efficacy, entrepreneurial morality, and readiness to apply entrepreneurial elements. Further studies are proposed to assess the relationship between entrepreneurial self-efficacy and entrepreneurial morality with the readiness to apply entrepreneurial elements. In addition, other factors could be further identified which correlates with the readiness to apply the entrepreneurial elements

Aluminium recycling activity on construction site: Malaysia case study

Aluminium is largely used in transportation industry to make vehicles, but not all country has their own transportation industry. But nearly all country has their construction industry. With the rise of aluminium usage in the effort to save the environment, it is wise to identify the recycling activity on a construction site. This paper is about the identification of aluminium recycling activity on a construction site. Construction site is second to transportation in term of aluminium usage. A case study is conducted to identify the aluminium recycling activity on the construction site.This study is explorative in nature as different country has different conduct of recycling on site. Fromconducted case study, one main recycling activity is in the light which is collecting. Even though it is only one activity, it appears in many stages of the aluminium recycling activity. By having this knowledge, it might help the responsible party to set up standardised recycling procedure on the construction site while at the same time encourage the recycling activity

A new code for optical code division multiple access systems

A new code structure based on Double-Weight (DW) code families is proposed for Spectral-Amplitude-Coding Optical Code Division Multiple Access (OCDMA) system. The constraint of a constant weight of 2 for the DW code can be relaxed using a mapping technique. By using this technique, codes that have a larger number of weight can be developed. Modified Double-Weight (MDW) Code is another variation of a DW code family that can has a variable weight greater than two. The MDW code possesses ideal cross-correlation properties and exists for every natural number n. A much better performance can be provided by using the MDW code compared to the existing codes such as Hadamard and Modified Frequency-Hopping (MFH) codes. Value creating activity from aluminium recycling on metal scrap collector site: Malaysia case study

This research is on the value creating activities from aluminium recycling on the metal scrap collector site. Less is known on how value is created from recycling. Value creation is important in order to generate profit. Metal scrap collector is one of the main component in the recycling chain which creates value for recycling. Understanding the value creation part of metal scrap collector will help to understand the value creation from recycling as metal scrap collector is one of the actors in the recycling industry. A case study was conducted in order to gather the data for this research. An indepth interview session was done with Managing Director of the metal scrap collector firm. A few value creating activities were identified consisting of two categories which is primary and supporting activities. Eventhough the separation between primary and supporting activities is in line with the value chain analysis by Porter. But the activities in the primary and supporting section differs slightly in a few section. This indicates that the value creation activities in the metal scrap collector differs from the original value chain analysis by Porter. Further research on other actors in the recycling value chain is needed in order to test the homogenousity throughout the recycling calue chain
