    Dual Inoculation of Rhizobium and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Increases Soil-Total Nitrogen, Available Phosphorus, and Yield of Soybean in Vertisols

    Soybean is a protein source food crop with high economic value. So far, national production has not been able to meet domestic demand resulting in continuing import of soybean. The use of rhizobium and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) as biological fertilizers could be an alternative to increase soybean production. The research aimed to investigate the effect of dual inoculation of rhizobium and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on root nodules formation, AMF development, total-N and available P of Vertisols, and yield of soybean. This study was designed in a completely randomized design) with 4 treatments namely no inoculation (R0), rhizobium inoculation (R1), AMF inoculation (R2), and dual inoculation of rhizobium and AMF (R3), with four replications. The variables observed were the number of effective root nodules, AMF spore density, AMF colonization, soil total-N, available P, plant height, number of pods, and seed weight. The results showed that dual inoculation of rhizobium and AMF had a better effect on the number of effective root nodules, AMF spore density, AMF colonization, soil total- N, available P, plant height, number of pods, and seed weight compared to the single inoculation and un-inoculated treatment

    Jemaat Gereja Betesda Buraen sebagian besarnya adalah petani dan tergabung dalam 5 kelompok tani. Banyak permasalahan pertanian dan ekonomi yang dihadapi kelompok tani di jemaat ini diantaranya menurunnya kesuburan tanah, meningkatnya serangan hama dan patogen  tanaman sehingga menurunkan pendapatan petani. Oleh karena itu pada kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PKM) ini, petani diberikan pengetahuan dan ketrampilan dalam mengolah limbah yang ada di linkungannya menjadi produk yang dapat meningkatkan produksi pertanian sekaligus pendapatan keluarga.Kegiatan ini juga dimaksudkan untuk mendaur ulang limbah menjadi bahan yang lebih bernilai sekaligus mengurangi dampak negatif limbah bagi lingkungan.  Kegiatan yang disiapkan berupa pelatihan pengolahan  limbah sekam padi menjadi biochar (bahan pembenah tanah), pengolahan limbah tekstil khususnya handuk bekas menjadi wadah tanam yang bernilai ekonomis serta peningkatkan pengetahuan dan ketrampilan dalam memanfaatkan tumbuh-tumbuhan yang tersedia di sekitartempat tinggal untuk membuat pestisida organik. Kegiatan ini telah dilakukan selama 1 hari. Terdapat paling sedikit 15 petani mengikuti kegiatan dari awal sampai selesai. Antusiasme peserta cukup besar untuk mengetahui dan mengikuti kegiatan PKM. terbukti dengan keterlibatan secara aktif selama diskusi dan praktek. Hasil evaluasi menunjukan ada peningkatan pengetahuan dan ketrampilan petani terhadap materi yang diberikan. Berdasarkan hasil  umpan balik peserta mengharapkan adanya kesinambungan kegiatan seperti ini sehingga dapat meningkatkan hasil pertanian dan juga  menghasilkan produk-produk lain yang dapat dijual untuk peningkatan pendapatan keluarga

    Influence of crop residue ration supplementation on the attainment of puberty and postpartum reproductive activities of Red Sokoto goats

    The general objective of this study was to come up with an appropriate, affordable and locally available crop residue supplementation package that would enhance reproductive performance in small ruminants. Specifically, 28 Red Sokoto weaner does between 3 and 4 months of age weighing between 2 and 3 kg were used in the first experiment to determine the influence of crop residue supplementation on age and weight at puberty as determined by blood progesterone levels. In the second experiment, another 28 adult does (equal to or greater than 2 years old) of the same breed in the same flock with lactation numbers between 1 and 3 were used to determine the length of postpartum acyclic period. In both experiments, a 3 x 2 factorial experimental design comprising three dietary supplements (A, B, C) at two feeding levels (1% and 2% of body weight) fed in addition to a basal diet of Digitaria smutsii hay and natural pasture ad libitum with an unsupplemented negative control group (D) and four goats per treatment was utilized. In ration A, a conventional concentrate supplement consisting of maize, wheat offal, cottonseed cake and bonemeal was utilized; in rations B and C, the supplement consisted of guinea-corn bran, cowpea husk and groundnut haulms; and maize offal, groundnut shells and groundnut haulms respectively. Unsupplemented (ration D) weaner does reached puberty at a later age and had lighter body weights than all the others. Weaner does on ration 2A (concentrate fed at 2% of body weight) attained puberty at the earliest age and heaviest body weight, although the age at puberty was not significantly different from those on rations 1A (concentrate fed at 1% body weight), 1C and 2C. Blood progesterone profiles before and after puberty ranged from 0.05 to 9.0 ng/ml, respectively, and was highest in does fed rations A and C and least in the unsupplemented does. The mean interval between kidding and initiation of ovarian activity was 54.28 plus or minus 17.61 days and the mean interval between kidding and conception was 63.04 plus or minus 25.34 days. Only 25% of the unsupplemented does conceived again during the period under study compared with 100% in rations 1A, 2A, 1C and 2C; 75% in ration 2B and 50% in ration 1B. It was concluded that implementation of supplementary feeding in the dry season improves reproductive performance in the Red Sokoto doe. Furthermore, ration C, a crop residue-based ration, was a suitable dry season supplementation alternative to the expensive conventional concentrate ration for the smallholder goat farmer in the subhumid tropics of Nigeria

    Hydrodynamics of local excitations after an interaction quench in 1D cold atomic gases

    We discuss the hydrodynamic approach to the study of the time evolution -induced by a quench- of local excitations in one dimension. We focus on interaction quenches: the considered protocol consists in creating a stable localized excitation propagating through the system, and then operating a sudden change of the interaction between the particles. To highlight the effect of the quench, we take the initial excitation to be a soliton. The quench splits the excitation into two packets moving in opposite directions, whose characteristics can be expressed in a universal way. Our treatment allows to describe the internal dynamics of these two packets in terms of the different velocities of their components. We confirm our analytical predictions through numerical simulations performed with the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and with the Calogero model (as an example of long range interactions and solvable with a parabolic confinement). Through the Calogero model we also discuss the effect of an external trapping on the protocol. The hydrodynamic approach shows that there is a difference between the bulk velocities of the propagating packets and the velocities of their peaks: it is possible to discriminate the two quantities, as we show through the comparison between numerical simulations and analytical estimates. In the realizations of the discussed quench protocol in a cold atom experiment, these different velocities are accessible through different measurement procedures. ArXI

    The Impact of Kidney Development on the Life Course: A Consensus Document for Action

    Hypertension and chronic kidney disease (CKD) have a significant impact on global morbidity and mortality. The Low Birth Weight and Nephron Number Working Group has prepared a consensus document aimed to address the relatively neglected issue for the developmental programming of hypertension and CKD. It emerged from a workshop held on April 2, 2016, including eminent internationally recognized experts in the field of obstetrics, neonatology, and nephrology. Through multidisciplinary engagement, the goal of the workshop was to highlight the association between fetal and childhood development and an increased risk of adult diseases, focusing on hypertension and CKD, and to suggest possible practical solutions for the future. The recommendations for action of the consensus workshop are the results of combined clinical experience, shared research expertise, and a review of the literature. They highlight the need to act early to prevent CKD and other related noncommunicable diseases later in life by reducing low birth weight, small for gestational age, prematurity, and low nephron numbers at birth through coordinated interventions. Meeting the current unmet needs would help to define the most cost-effective strategies and to optimize interventions to limit or interrupt the developmental programming cycle of CKD later in life, especially in the poorest part of the world

    A Large-Scale Distribution of Milk-Based Fortified Spreads: Evidence for a New Approach in Regions with High Burden of Acute Malnutrition

    BACKGROUND: There are 146 million underweight children in the developing world, which contribute to up to half of the world's child deaths. In high burden regions for malnutrition, the treatment of individual children is limited by available resources. Here, we evaluate a large-scale distribution of a nutritional supplement on the prevention of wasting. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A new ready-to-use food (RUF) was developed as a diet supplement for children under three. The intervention consisted of six monthly distributions of RUF during the 2007 hunger gap in a district of Maradi region, Niger, for approximately 60,000 children (length: 60-85 cm). At each distribution, all children over 65 cm had their Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) recorded. Admission trends for severe wasting (WFH<70% NCHS) in Maradi, 2002-2005 show an increase every year during the hunger gap. In contrast, in 2007, throughout the period of the distribution, the incidence of severe acute malnutrition (MUAC<110 mm) remained at extremely low levels. Comparison of year-over-year admissions to the therapeutic feeding program shows that the 2007 blanket distribution had essentially the same flattening effect on the seasonal rise in admissions as the 2006 individualized treatment of almost 60,000 children moderately wasted. CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate the potential for distribution of fortified spreads to reduce the incidence of severe wasting in large population of children 6-36 months of age. Although further information is needed on the cost-effectiveness of such distributions, these results highlight the importance of re-evaluating current nutritional strategies and international recommendations for high burden areas of childhood malnutrition

    The burden, distribution and risk factors for cervical oncogenic human papilloma virus infection in HIV positive Nigerian women

    Background: The expected reduction in cervical cancer incidence as a result of increased access to antiretroviral therapy is yet to be seen. In this study we investigated the effect of HIV infection and treatment on high-risk (hr) human papilloma virus (HPV) prevalence and distribution. Methods: Cervical cells from 515 (220 HIV positive and 295 HIV negative) women, recruited during community cervical cancer screening programme in states of Ogun and Lagos and at the cervical cancer screen clinic, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research Lagos were evaluated for the presence of 13 hr HPV genotypes by polymerase chain reaction based assay. Results: The prevalence of high-risk HPV was 19.6% in the studied population. HPV 16 (3.9%), 35 (3.5%), 58 (3.3%) and 31 (3.3%) were the most common hr HPV infections detected. We observed that the prevalence of hr HPV was higher in HIV positives (24.5%) than 15.9% in HIV negative women (OR = 1.7; 95% CI: 1.1-2.7). A multivariate logistic regression analysis showed a lower hr HPV prevalence in HIV positive women on antiretroviral drugs (OR = 0.4; 95% CI: 0.3-0.5) and with CD4 count of 500 and above (OR = 0.7; 95% CI: 0.5-0.8). A higher prevalence of hr HPV was also noted in HIV positive women with CD4 count <200 cells/mm3 (OR = 2.4; 95% CI: 1.7-5.9). Conclusion: HPV 16, 35, 58 and 31 genotypes were the most common hr HPV infection in our study group, which could be regarded as high risk general population sample; with higher prevalence of HPV 16 and 35 in HIV positive women than in HIV negative women. The use of antiretroviral drugs was found to be associated with a lower prevalence of hr HPV infection, compared to those not on treatment. This study raises important issues that should be further investigated to enable the development of robust cervical cancer prevention and control strategies for women in our setting
