Cinema semiotics: An application of Hodge and Tripp’s Paradigm/Syntagm approach

Abstract. Various scholars have defined the term semiotics according to their understanding but with a unifying central meaning which is the study of signs. Two important aspects of semiotics are syntagm and paradigm. The organization of signs by chain is referred to as syntagm, while by choice it is referred to as paradigm. According to Hodge & Tripp (1986), as far as syntagmatic structures are concerned, texts are examined from three different angles or variables: space, time, and continuity. Moreover, in film the interpretations of individual, shots depend on both paradigmatic analysis (comparing it, not necessarily, with the use of alternative kinds of shots) and syntagmatic analysis (comparing it with preceding and following shots). This paper, applies the concept of Syntagm and Paradigm given by Hodge and Tripp to analyse the structure of two films from Nigeria’s film industries i.e. Kanywood and Nollywood industries.Keywords. This study made an assessment of the existing reservoir capacity of Tiga Dam in Kano State, Nigeria, of 1090 x 106m3 using Gould Probability Matrix method. A generated annual inflow series between (1906 and 2004), rainfall and evaporation loss estimated for the period between 1990 and 2004 coupled with demand data obtained from Bichi (2003) and the Hadejia Jamaare River Basin Authority (HJRBA), are used in this study. The results indicated that the probability of failure approaches zero at a reservoir capacity of 540 x 106m3. Less than 0.25% probability of failure could be achieved with a capacity of 270 x 106m3 and the downstream requirement could be increased to certain substantial amount by reducing the capacity of the dam thereby allowing flow into Hadejia-Jama'are River and Kumodugu-Yobe system which has been completely regulated. Increasing the downstream flow will alleviate social, economic and environmental trauma that had been subjected to the downstream community. A NEW NATIONAL SECURITY STRATEGY TO COMBAT BOKO HARAM TERRORISM IN NIGERIA

    Get PDF
For several decades, terrorism has shaped Nigeria’s security paradigm. Many scholars agree that misperceptions of Islamic religious doctrine, poor governance, and socioeconomic difficulties are the root causes of this internal security. To address this problem, Nigeria has devised several strategies such as enactment of National Counterterrorism Strategy in 2004. Additionally, a non-kinetic strategy, which includes Operation Safe Corridor, was initiated to encourage terrorists to surrender and embrace peace through disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration. Despite these laudable initiatives, Nigeria has not adequately addressed the menace of terrorism. Remaining challenges include applying a conventional approach to an unconventional threat, insufficient employment of technology and inadequate intelligence support, and inadequate international cooperation. This thesis recommends a new strategy that will address the challenges of counterterrorism in Nigeria. Some viable options for Nigeria include involving all related governmental bodies to contribute toward the fight against Boko Haram terrorism, abolishing the Almajiri system of education, and developing social intervention and empowerment programs to eradicate poverty in northeastern Nigeria. Finally, extensive public education is required to support the efforts.Commander, Nigerian NavyApproved for public release. Distribution is unlimited

This research aims to identify internal and external factors, analyze what strategies can be implemented and what strategies are recommended in an effort to develop Yoyo Corn Garden as a tourist attraction. Research was conducted at the Yoyo Corn Garden natural tourist attraction in Tarumajaya District, Bekasi Regency. The problem that occurs is that the number of visitors continues to decline every week. The decrease in the number of visitors was caused by a lack of promotion, facilities and management knowledge to manage the business which was not yet optimal. The method used in this research is SWOT analysis using the IFAS, EFAS matrices and the grand strategy matrix. In every environmental analysis there are several factors in it, namely strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The results of this research in the SWOT analysis obtained 9 alternative strategies that can be used. The results of calculating the total score on the IFAS matrix are 1.50 and the total score on the EFAS matrix is 1.29, this shows that the opportunities and strengths that are owned can overcome weaknesses and threats well. The position of Yoyo Corn Plantation in the grand strategy matrix is in quadrant I (one), so the strategy that will be recommended to be implemented is an aggressive strategy using the SO (strength - opportunity) strategy by utilizing internal strengths to maximize existing opportunities in an effort to develop Yoyo Corn Plantation as an object. tour
