    Organic vs Conventional Suckling Lamb Production: Product Quality and Consumer Acceptance

    Samples of suckling lambs (n=40) of two breeds reared under conventional and organic conditions were analysed to asses physico-chemical characteristics, including instrumental texture, and nutritional quality in terms of fatty acid composition. Consumer acceptance was also studied using the home-use test. Results revealed that organic suckling lamb meat is healthier as shown by the lower saturated fatty acid levels, the higher polyunsaturated fatty acid contents and the higher 6/3 ratiko. The organic meat had lower instrumental hardness, received higher scores in all sensory parameters, and had statistically better fat sensation and higher ratings for overall liking. These results lend support to the notion among consumers that organic products are healthier and tastier

    Consumer Appreciation of Carcass Quality of Organic vs Conventional Suckling Lamb Production

    Carcass characteristics of sucking lambs (n= 40) of two breeds reared under conventional and organic conditions were analysed including objective and subjective parameters for fatness and conformation, meat and fat colour. Consumer acceptance was also studied using the home-use test. Results showed that the characteristics of the carcass of suckling lamb were similar for both types of production systems pointing out that organic production system did not affect fatness or muscle development. However, organic meat was darker (higher L* and a* values) probably related with the higher amount of exercise, although fat was not more yellow. In contrast consumers did not consider organic meat darker and there were not significant differences in appearance related with the similar conformation. These results reflect that consumer perceive organic meat as at least as good as conventional production not only regarding environmental quality but also regarding carcass quality

    Comunicação apresentada no 12.º Congresso Nacional da BAD.O advento da Internet e a evolução dos suportes documentais levou à alteração de comportamentos de pesquisa e impressão de documentos por parte dos docentes/investigadores das instituições de ensino superior (IES). Este estudo decorreu numa IES e pretende ajudar a compreender os hábitos de leitura e impressão de documentos científicos dos seus docentes/investigadores. A recolha de dados fez-se através da distribuição online de um questionário. Obtiveram-se 117 respostas. 100% dos respondentes referiram utilizar a Internet para pesquisar documentos científicos; a maioria dos docentes/investigadores faz leitura de artigos científicos em suporte digital e de livros de texto em suporte papel; não ocorreram diferenças evidentes quanto ao género e faixas etárias; a frequência de impressão concentra-se nos parâmetros Ocasionalmente e Frequentemente; a área das Ciências Sociais e Humanidades recolhe maior número de respostas no parâmetro Frequentemente; a área das Ciências Exatas e Engenharia recolhe maior número de repostas no parâmetro Ocasionalmente. Os resultados obtidos evidenciam uma percentagem elevada de docentes/investigadores a imprimir documentos que recolhe da Internet. O conhecimento dos hábitos de leitura e impressão de documentos pode ajudar à tomada de decisão sobre recursos e suportes de leitura a disponibilizar pelas bibliotecas aos docentes/investigadores das IES

    Loyal and stubborn heroes: the main character’s personality in Classic Hollywood cinema

    This research aims to analyze the main characters’ construction in classic Hollywood cinema by focusing on their personalities. This work follows Bordwell, Staiger and Thompson’s notions of classic cinema. The sample includes films from 1930 to 1960. Character is understood as personality and as a psychological unit. Characterization is defined by each trait that refers to the totality of their character. We start with the hypothesis that there are central tendencies for creating heroes and heroines in classic cinema. However, these tendencies also correspond with the film narrative model, which is shaped by the functionality of the narrative categories in the story. Personality is among those factors that shape the construction of the character. We applied a methodology of film narrative analysis to a sample of 64 films from six extensive genres in classic Hollywood cinema. The results confirm that the main character in classic cinema is conditioned and shaped by their adaptation to the film’s genre. The hero is usually positive according to what is considered socially acceptable values; the dramatic needs of the plot predetermine their definition. The Hollywood main character’s personality is based on their functionality as they serve the narrative needs of the story

    Batch fecundity of Sardina pilchardus off the Iberian Peninsula

    Batch fecundity, the number of eggs released per spawning event, was determined for the first time in pilchard Sardina pilchardus (Walb.) off the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The mean relative fecundity (number of hydrated oocytes per gram of female weight was 416 (standard deviation = 112.9). Different regression models with Portuguese and Spanish data of batch fecundity by weight are presented. A linear model weighted least squares regression is established. The weighted regression presents a homogeneous distribution of the variance, small mean square error of the regression and highest R-squared, according whit this expression: F = -1260.8 + 444.43 W Linear regression of batch fecundity by age for Portugal data is: F = 30811.11 + 3711.88

    An electrochemical Study of Phenol Oxidation in Acidic Medium

    [EN] This work addresses the electrooxidation of phenol on platinum electrodes applying cyclic voltametry. The effect of different parameters on the electrooxidation of phenol, such as the scan rate, the inversion potential, the phenol concentration, the sulphuric acid concentration, and the stirring of the solution, were investigated using a conventional three-electrode cell. The results show the presence of an oxidation peak in the region around 1V vs Ag/AgCl to all conditions evaluated. In cyclic voltametric experiments a gradual decrease of the oxidation peak with the number of cycles was observed, and after about four cycles there was no more evidence of a peak. This behavior was repeated for all phenol and sulphuric acid concentrations studied.     Formation of soliton trains in Bose-Einstein condensates as a nonlinear Fresnel diffraction of matter waves

    The problem of generation of atomic soliton trains in elongated Bose-Einstein condensates is considered in framework of Whitham theory of modulations of nonlinear waves. Complete analytical solution is presented for the case when the initial density distribution has sharp enough boundaries. In this case the process of soliton train formation can be viewed as a nonlinear Fresnel diffraction of matter waves. Theoretical predictions are compared with results of numerical simulations of one- and three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation and with experimental data on formation of Bose-Einstein bright solitons in cigar-shaped traps.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
