Objective: To evaluate the value of maternal serum advanced glycation end products (AGEs) level at 11–13 weeks’ gestation for the prediction of preterm labor and or preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM). Materials and methods: This prospective cross-sectional study is performed in a university-affiliated hospital between February and April 2016. The participants of this study are low-risk pregnant women. Blood samples for maternal AGEs level were collected in the first trimester of pregnancy and all women completed their antenatal follow-up and delivered in our center. During the follow-up 21 women developed preterm labor/PPROM. The first trimester maternal AGEs levels of preterm labor/PPROM cases were compared with uncomplicated cases (n¼25) matched for age-parity and BMI. The predictive value of AGEs levels for preterm labor/PPROM was also assessed. Results: First-trimester AGEs levels were significantly higher in cases complicated with preterm labor/PPROM (1832 (415–6682) versus 1276 (466–6445) ng/L, p¼.001 and 1722 (804–6682) versus 1343 (466–6445) ng/L, p¼.025). According to receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis, the calculated cut off value of AGEs was 1538 ng/L with the sensitivity 91.7%, specificity 73.8%; and the negative and positive predictive values were 91.6% and 29.5%, respectively. Conclusions: For the prediction of preterm labor/PPROM, the relatively high AGEs levels in the first trimester might be a useful marker

In this study, the current curriculum of the "Changes in Matter and Energy" unit in the science course of the eight grade in primary school education and the curriculum developed by the researcher for the same unit were compared in terms of the accessibility of the target behaviours declared by Ministry of National Education in year 2000 science education program. In this study, A survey and experimental model (pre-test and posttest) have been used. Firstly, a Teacher Opinion Survey related with the unit in the current curriculum was applied to 100 primary education science teachers who work in Bursa city. Second, the Proficiency Level test, Science Attitudes Scale and Multiple Intelligence Field Determination Scale tests were applied to the students. From the results of tests, it is inferred that 4 classes, each consists of 88 students. The classes that have same levels are paired to make experiment and control groups. Then, the Unit manual, Students Book and Teachers Book written by the researcher were applied on the experiment groups, consist of 44 students, in two different classes. The current curriculum was applied on control groups. One of the experiment groups and control groups are taught by the science teacher of the school to another experiment group. The rest are taught by the researcher. At the end of the study the Achievement Determination Survey Questions were applied to both experiment and control groups. In the data analysis, One way Analysis of Variances, Scheffe Test and t Test calculations were done by SPSS 1beşinci00 statistics software. As a result of Proficiency Level Test applied in the beginning of the study, there was a significant difference between students. Thus, the experiment and control groups were chosen considering their Proficiency Level Test results. At the end of the study, it was seen that the levels of achievement of the experiment groups which were applied to the researchers program were higher than the control groups. Consequently, it was found that there should be more activities, visual materials, games, puzzles, concept maps, and analogies in the curriculum

WOS:000519150900024 PubMed ID: 30982141This study was carried out to investigate the effects of hand massage and therapeutic touch on comfort and anxiety in the elderly living in nursing homes. The study was designed as a randomized controlled, experimental study (with a pre- and posttest control group). The study population comprised 255 older people aged 65-89 living in a nursing home in Izmir, a province in Turkey. The study sample included 30 older patients, who were assigned to hand massage (HM) (n = 10), therapeutic touch (TT) (n = 10) and control (C) (n = 10) groups. Of the elderly who participated in the study, 50% were female and 80% were single. It was determined that TT and HM decreased the anxiety and increased the comfort levels of the elderly living in the nursing home (p < 0.05). It is thought that nurses can easily integrate HM and TT which are non-medical, non-pharmacologic interventions with no adverse effects into care activities

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play an important role in non-specific immunity against different infectious agents such as bacterium or parasite. The aim of this work was to investigate the allele and genotype frequencies of three single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in bovine TLR1 gene in native Turkish cattle breeds. DNA samples were extracted using the phenol chloroform protocol from 77 Zavot, 60 Turkish Grey, 51 East Anatolian Red, 69 Anatolian Black and 46 South Anatolian Red cattle. Target regions of the TLR1 gene were digested BsII and HpyI88III restriction enzymes. Results showed that the (A) allele frequency had higher in all native Turkish cattle breeds of the TLR1-G1409A locus. The (F) allele frequency was found to be higher compared to (E) allele in the TLR1-G1550A site. The frequencies of both (C) and (T) alleles were close to each other in the TLR1-C632T site. In conclusion genetic polymorphisms exist in Turkish native cattle populations in terms of known TLR1 variants

Background: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is still a complex and challenging process which requires clinical evidence regarding its etiology, treatment and prognostic factors. Therefore, determination of prognostic factors might aid in the selection of proper treatment modality. Aims: The aim of this study is to analyze whether there is correlation between SSNHL outcomes and (1) systemic steroid therapy, (2) time gap between onset of symptoms and initiation of therapy and (3) audiological pattern of hearing loss. Study Design: Retrospective chart review. Methods: Patients diagnosed at our clinic with SSNHL between May 2005 and December 2011were reviewed. A detailed history of demographic features, side of hearing loss, previous SSNHL and/or ear surgery, recent upper respiratory tract infection, season of admission, duration of symptoms before admission and the presence of co-morbid diseases was obtained. Radiological and audiological evaluations were recorded and treatment protocol was assessed to determine whether systemic steroids were administered or not. Treatment started ≤5 days was regarded as “early” and >5 days as “delayed”. Initial audiological configurations were grouped as “upward sloping”, “downward sloping”, “flat” and “profound” hearing loss. Significant recovery was defined as thresholds improved to the same level with the unaffected ear or improved ≥30 dB on average. Slight recovery was hearing improvement between 10-30dB on average. Hearing recovery less than 10 dB was accepted as unchanged. Results: Among the 181 patients who met the inclusion criteria, systemic steroid was administered to 122 patients (67.4%), whereas 59 (32.6%) patients did not have steroids. It was found that steroid administration did not have any statistically significant effect in either recovered or unchanged hearing groups. Early treatment was achieved in 105 patients (58%) and 76 patients (42%) had delayed treatment. Recovery rates were no different in these two groups; however, when unchanged hearing rates were compared, it was statistically significantly lower in the early treatment group (p<0.05). When hearing outcomes were compared according to initial audiological pattern, significant recovery and unchanged hearing rates did not differ between groups; however, slight recovery rate was highest in the “flat” type audiological configuration (p<0.05). Conclusion: According to this patient series, oral steroid therapy does not have any influence on the outcomes of SSNHL. However, mid-frequency hearing loss of flat type and initiation of treatment earlier than 5 days from the onset of symptoms, seem to have positive prognostic effects. Further randomized controlled subject groups might contribute to determine prognostic factors of SSNHL

© Ankara Üniversitesi Ziraat Fakültesi. The objective of this study was to examine the allelic and genotypic profiles of four SNPs of bovine Toll-Like receptor 1 (TLR1), Toll-Like Receptor 4 (TLR4) and Solute Linkete Carier 11A1 (SLC11A1) genes in Holstein, two Turkish native breeds and their crossbreds in Turkey. For this purpose, a total of 1023 cattle from Holstein (HL, n= 410), Anatolian Black (AB, n= 106), East Anatolian Red (EAR, n= 84), Anatolian Black Crossbreed (ABC, n= 124) and East Anatolian Red crossbreed (EARC, n= 299) breeds were examined for four SNPs. Samples were genotyped using by the PCR-RFLP method. According to the TLR1 (+1380) SNP, EAR was in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) while the AB, HL and native crossbreeds were deviated from HWE. All cattle breeds were in HWE for the TLR1 (+1596) SNP. In terms of TLR4 (+10) SNP, the CC genotype had the highest frequency in HL and native crossbreeds whereas the AB and EAR breeds were monomorphic and only CC genotype was found these breeds. According to the SLC11A1 (+1066) SNP, the CC genotype had the highest while the GG genotype frequency the lowest in all breeds. In addition EAR breed was in HWE while the AB, HL and native crossbreeds deviated from HWE

    No full text
This study was conducted to identify gene polymorphisms and to investigate the relationships of polymorphisms with yield and composition of milk from Holstein cows. Significant relationships of growth hormone (GH), leptin (LEP) and myogenic factor 5 (MYF5) gene polymorphisms with 305-day milk yield were observed (P 0.05). With regard to the 305-day milk yield, GH-LV, LEP-AA and AB and MYF5-GG genotypes were found to be superior over the other genotypes. It was concluded based on present findings that GH, LEP and MYF5 genes could be used as candidate genes for milk yield of Holstein cows
