Exploring spirituality/religion related interventions used by mental health workers in psychotherapy and counseling

This qualitative, exploratory and descriptive study is designed to gain understanding about the question: In what ways do mental health professionals incorporate spiritual and/or religious interventions during psychotherapy? It builds on existing research, focusing on specific interventions that have been carried out in a variety of mental health disciplines. The study is an attempt to further identify and document such interventions. It also explores factors that contribute to the successful use of the interventions within therapy sessions. Twelve highly experienced mental health workers in the eastern United States were interviewed, including clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, pastoral counselors, clinical psychologists, and a marriage and family counselor. Analysis of their recorded responses to a structured interview with open-ended questions resulted in thick descriptions of their accounts of cases, interventions, and their perceived success factors. The most significant and dramatic finding of this research project is support for the assertion that: When appropriate, a willingness and ability to include spirituality and/or religion in the psychotherapeutic process is essential to optimal psychotherapy

The Art of the Resistance: Participation in the Slipstream and Acts of Resistance in a Culinary Re-Entry Program

Social policies since 1996 require that low income people participate in job training programs in order to receive social benefits under the “New Welfare State.” Many scholars have argued that job training programs aim to produce docile workers, who carry out only highly routinized work where little discretion is needed. Through ethnographic observation and interviews, I identify three means by which trainees manage the dual expectations of docility and the creativity demanded in a kitchen setting. First, they operate in a routine fashion, as if in a slipstream; second, they bank confidence by disregarding rules because of skill or favor by the chef; and third, workers take liberties and use resistance when not under surveillance. These findings suggest previous scholarship has overstated the extent to which the New Welfare State produces docile subjects, and implies that there are indeed a variety of outcomes of dignity and creativity for these workers

Protest Music of the Vietnam War: Description and Classification of Various Protest Songs.

The Vietnam War and subsequent protest movement remains one of the most tumultuous times in U.S. history. This thesis is an attempt to define and describe the protest movement as well as the varied popular protest songs that came from this era. Building on a previous study written by Elizabeth Kizer, this thesis creates sub-categories in which the protest music falls into. The first two chapters of this study help by giving historical context to the songs by describing the Vietnam War and then the protest movement in the U.S. The final chapter then deals with popular protest songs that appeared on the Billboard charts between 1960 and 1969

Development of fire-resistant, low smoke generating, thermally stable end items for aircraft and spacecraft

Materials were developed to improve aircraft interior materials by modifying existing polymer structures, refining the process parameters, and by the use of mechanical configurations designed to overcome specific deficiencies. The optimization, selection, and fabrication of five fire resistant, low smoke emitting open cell foams are described for five different types of aircraft cabin structures. These include: resilient foams, laminate floor and wall paneling, thermal/acoustical insulation, molded shapes, and coated fabrics. All five have been produced from essentially the same polyimide precursor and have resulted in significant benefits from transfer of technology between the various tasks

Development of fire-resistant, low smoke generating, thermally stable end items for commercial aircraft and spacecraft using a basic polyimide resin

A terpolyimide precursor was developed which can be foamed by microwave methods and yields foams possessing the best seating properties. A continuous process, based on spray drying techniques, permits production of polyimide powder precursors in large quantities. The constrained rise foaming process permits fabrication of rigid foam panels with improved mechanical properties and almost unlimited density characteristics. Polyimide foam core rigid panels were produced by this technique with woven fiberglass fabric bonded to each side of the panel in a one step microwave process. The fire resistance of polyimide foams was significantly improved by the addition of ceramic fibers to the powder precursors. Foams produced from these compositions are flexible, possess good acoustical attenuation and meet the minimum burnthrough requirements when impinged by high flux flame sources

Root Rot of Legumes Caused by Cylindrocladium scoparium

Massey ( 3) in 1927 was the first to report that Cylindrocladium scoparium Morgan could parasitize plants. In 1928 Sherbakoff ( 4) isolated the fungus from a chlorotic red clover plant and from diseased apple roots. Cox (2) proved that C. scoparium can cause damping-off, root rot, stem infection, and needle blight on seedlings of several conifers. He also found that C. scoparium was highly pathogenic on several species of Leguminosae. Bugbee ( 1 ) reported alfalfa to be ideal for detecting C. scoparium in soil in the greenhouse because the seedlings damped-off and the fungus sporulated on the seedlings. There is, however, essentially no information on the pathogenicity of this fungus on forage legumes. This study was undertaken to determine what effect C. Scoparium in soil would have on germination and stand of alfalfa ( Medicago sativa L.), red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) and sweetclover (Melilotus spp.

A Communication Analysis of Religion in Education

The researchers chose to examine religion as a factor in the decision to attend a university and the way that students adapt communicatively to faith-based universities. The concept brought many aspects of communication into play, but only a specific group of theories were applicable to the research findings. The researchers selected two theories to help explain the data: Communication Accommodation Theory and Symbolic Interactionism Theory. Both, Communication Accommodation Theory and Symbolic Interactionism Theory, focus on the decision-making and adaptation aspects of the study

Extended Weight Systems Pavement Analysis

Kentucky established its Extended Weight Coal or Coal By-products Haul Road System (EWCHRS) in 1986. This road network includes segments of the Coal Haul Highway System on which more than 50,000 tons coal or coal byproducts were transported by motor vehicles during the previous calendar year. In the past few years, the state has introduced extended weight (EW) systems focused on petroleum products and metal commodities. Trucks can operate above posted weight limits on these networks by paying annual fees that range from $160 to$2,000. While EW networks benefit motor carriers by improving efficiency, vehicles that exceed weight limits can damage pavement and reduce its service life. This study examines the relationship between pavement age and pavement condition on EWCHRS routes and non-EWCHRS routes to understand the implications of EW networks for infrastructure life-cycles. Using data from 2008 through 2020 (with the exception of 2016) to perform regression analysis, researchers found that routes which spent at least 20% of the study period on the EWCHRS saw pavement life decline by 1.5 – 2 years. In general, a positive correlation was observed between exposure on the EWCHRS and loss of pavement life, which can increase maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation costs. While the future of commodity-specific EW networks in Kentucky is unclear, data management strategies can be adopted by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to improve its support of existing and future EW networks

Methods of preparing polyimides and artifacts composed thereof

Methods of converting essentially unpolymerized precursors into polyimides in which the precursors are exposed to microwave radiation. Preheating, thermal post-curing, and other techniques may be employed to promote the development of optimum properties; and reinforcements can be employed to impart strength and rigidity to the final product. Also disclosed are processes for making various composite artifacts in which non-polymeric precursors are converted to polyimides by using the techniques described above
