    Masked Abilities and Manipulation Arguments

Dispositional accounts of free will provide a promising avenue for compatibilists about free will and determinism to respond to manipulation arguments, but requires an adequate account of masked and finkish abilities. In this thesis, I argue that an account of masked dispositions that addresses the context sensitivity, gradability, and dispositional quality of masks can allow dispositional compatibilists to level viable responses to various manipulation arguments. I address my response towards both Pereboom’s and Mele’s manipulation arguments

An evaluation of the graviton propagator in de sitter space

    Get PDF
The graviton propagator in four-dimensional de Sitter space is found in closed form. The vacuum state is taken to be the de Sitter-invariant “euclidean” or “Gibbons-Hawking” vacuum. The gauge-fixing term used is the standard choice introduced by Christensen and Duff. The propagator is given explicity in this gauge, and is found to be finite for points that are not null-related. The method used is new: mode-sums on the four-sphere are expressed as maximally symmetric bitensors. The result is then given in a completely geometric and coördinate-free form. This same method can easily be used for maximally symmetric spaces of general dimension, including anti-de Sitter space with supersymmetric boundary conditions, and for different choices of gauge

Maximally Symmetric Spin-Two Bitensors on S3S^3 and H3H^3

The transverse traceless spin-two tensor harmonics on S3S^3 and H3H^3 may be denoted by T(kl)abT^{(kl)}{}_{ab}. The index kk labels the (degenerate) eigenvalues of the Laplacian \square and ll the other indices. We compute the bitensor lT(kl)ab(x)T(kl)ab(x)\sum_l T^{(kl)}{}_{ab}(x) T^{(kl)}{}_{a'b'}(x')^* where x,xx,x' are distinct points on a sphere or hyperboloid of unit radius. These quantities may be used to find the correlation function of a stochastic background of gravitational waves in spatially open or closed Friedman-Robertson-Walker cosmologies.Comment: 12 pages, RevTeX, uuencoded compressed .tex file, minor typos correcte

A Walsh-Fourier approach to the circulant Hadamard conjecture

    Get PDF
We describe an approach to the circulant Hadamard conjecture based on Walsh-Fourier analysis. We show that the existence of a circulant Hadamard matrix of order nn is equivalent to the existence of a non-trivial solution of a certain homogenous linear system of equations. Based on this system, a possible way of proving the conjecture is proposed.Comment: 8 page

    On dispositional masks

    Get PDF
Dispositions can be masked: some state of affairs might obtain which would prevent an entity from displaying the manifestation characteristic of its disposition. Yet discussions of masks overlook a number of key problems, chief among them the probabilistic nature of many dispositional masks. In this paper, I highlight the manner in which past analyses of dispositional masks have been unable to solve the problem of masks. I propose an analysis of dispositional masks which focuses on this and a number of other problems, which I argue can address them better than past accounts can. I argue that some entity masks some disposition just in case that entity makes it such that the disposition is less likely to manifest, or such that it will manifest to a lower degree

Alterations in oxidative, inflammatory and apoptotic events in short-lived and long-lived mice testes

Aged testes undergo profound histological and morphological alterations leading to a reduced functionality. Here, we investigated whether variations in longevity affect the development of local inflammatory processes, the oxidative state and the occurrence of apoptotic events in the testis. To this aim, well-established mouse models with delayed (growth hormone releasing hormone-knockout and Ames dwarf mice) or accelerated (growth hormone-transgenic mice) aging were used. We hereby show that the testes of short-lived mice show a significant increase in cyclooxygenase 2 expression, PGD2 production, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzymes expression, local macrophages and TUNEL-positive germ cells numbers, and the levels of both pro-caspase-3 and cleaved caspase-3. In contrast, although the expression of antioxidant enzymes remained unchanged in testes of long-lived mice, the remainder of the parameters assessed showed a significant reduction. This study provides novel evidence that longevity confers anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-apoptotic capacities to the adult testis. Oppositely, short-lived mice suffer testicular inflammatory, oxidative and apoptotic processes.Fil: Matzkin, Maria Eugenia. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Masks, Finks, and Gender

    Get PDF
According to the dispositional account of gender, to have a gender is to have some set of behavioral dispositions. Robin Dembroff (2020) levels a strong objection to Jennifer McKitrick’s (2015) dispositional view of gender, arguing that it can neither capture the extension of genderqueer identities nor treat them with the respect that they warrant. In this paper, I offer a defense of the dispositional view against these charges. I argue that accounts of dispositions tailored to deal with masks and finks—phenomena that would prevent a disposition from manifesting or change a disposition if it were about to manifest—can avoid Dembroff’s extensional worry without reducing nonbinary identities to a matter of mere linguistic convention. I offer a revision to the dispositional account of genderqueer that incorporates Dembroff’s insights about the nature of destabilizing gender binaries

The group approach to AdS space propagators

We show that AdS two-point functions can be obtained by connecting two points in the interior of AdS space with one point on its boundary by a dual pair of Dobrev's boundary-to-bulk intertwiners and integrating over the boundary point.Comment: 23 page

On the ground states of the Bernasconi model

The ground states of the Bernasconi model are binary +1/-1 sequences of length N with low autocorrelations. We introduce the notion of perfect sequences, binary sequences with one-valued off-peak correlations of minimum amount. If they exist, they are ground states. Using results from the mathematical theory of cyclic difference sets, we specify all values of N for which perfect sequences do exist and how to construct them. For other values of N, we investigate almost perfect sequences, i.e. sequences with two-valued off-peak correlations of minimum amount. Numerical and analytical results support the conjecture that almost perfect sequences do exist for all values of N, but that they are not always ground states. We present a construction for low-energy configurations that works if N is the product of two odd primes.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX2e; extended content, added references; submitted to J.Phys.
