    Get PDF

Resting-state connectivity and functional specialization in human medial parieto-occipital cortex

According to recent models of visuo-spatial processing, the medial parieto-occipital cortex is a crucial node of the dorsal visual stream. Evidence from neurophysiological studies in monkeys has indicated that the parieto-occipital sulcus (POS) contains three functionally and cytoarchitectonically distinct areas: the visual area V6 in the fundus of the POS, and the visuo-motor areas V6Av and V6Ad in a progressively dorsal and anterior location with respect to V6. Besides different topographical organization, cytoarchitectonics, and functional properties, these three monkey areas can also be distinguished based on their patterns of cortico-cortical connections. Thanks to wide-field retinotopic mapping, areas V6 and V6Av have been also mapped in the human brain. Here, using a combined approach of resting-state functional connectivity and task-evoked activity by fMRI, we identified a new region in the anterior POS showing a pattern of functional properties and cortical connections that suggests a homology with the monkey area V6Ad. In addition, we observed distinct patterns of cortical connections associated with the human V6 and V6Av which are remarkably consistent with those showed by the anatomical tracing studies in the corresponding monkey areas. Consistent with recent models on visuo-spatial processing, our findings demonstrate a gradient of functional specialization and cortical connections within the human POS, with more posterior regions primarily dedicated to the analysis of visual attributes useful for spatial navigation and more anterior regions primarily dedicated to analyses of spatial information relevant for goal-directed action

Culture and the City: Towards a Context-Aware Assessment Framework

How to assess the capacity of cultural initiatives to generate social value in urban contexts? Which lenses allow capturing dynamics that affect their transformative potential? Assuming that the social value of cultural actions goes far beyond their direct impacts and depends on their capacity to intercept broader trajectories of change, the contribution identifies observation lenses capable of rendering a complex picture of relations between actors, actions, and context-specific variables. Through a process-oriented approach, the authors put contexts back at the centre and look not so much at impacts per sè as at impact generation mechanisms. Moving beyond economic impact evaluation, they look at culture-driven social value generated in three impact domains: health and well-being, urban regeneration, and social cohesion. Without proposing a comprehensive evaluation scheme, the contribution identifies obstacles and enabling factors influencing the transformative capacity of cultural actions on an urban scale. In line with the conceptual and methodological setting of the research - carried out within the H2020 MESOC (MEasuring the SOcial impacts of Culture) Project - the authors reflect on these evaluative objects and question whether (and to what extent) they support a reflection on specific cultural actions but also on the capacity of urban contexts with different characteristics to welcome and promote transformation dynamics towards social impact generation

    Get PDF
Within the simulation horizon, through several scenerios related to the performance of the Mexican and international economies, CO2 emissions derived from energetic combustion are determined; and these could be classified as a base line for the design and implementation of policies that could reduce them. Furthermore, these emissions are projected through an extrapolation process, and the results of “official” policies to diminish them are determined given the existing assortment of goals; hence, the gaps pending for elimination are identified. On the other hand, the variety of policies implemented nowadays are not enough to face the problem’s magnitude; thus requiring the impulse of nuclear technology for power generation, the adoption of bio-fuels which allow an articulation with the agricultural sector, intense utilization of available energetics, more renewables, and the efficient usage of energy amongst many other policies.Mexican economic growth, 2030 projections, CO2 emissions

Bonding Properties of Isolated Metal Atoms on Two-Dimensional Oxides

We report a systematic comparative dispersion-corrected DFT study of single (K, Au, and Pt) atom adsorption over a wide range of metal-supported oxide ultrathin films (MgO on Ag and Mo, ZnO on Cu, Ag, and Au, SiO2 on Pt and Ru, TiO2 on Ag and Pt, and ZrO2 on Pt and ZrPt). These films include reducible and non-reducible oxides and have been prepared and characterized experimentally, showing very unusual and interesting behavior toward metal atom adsorption. The interaction of K and Au with the metal/oxide substrates is dominated by charge-transfer aspects, where K tends to assume positive charge and Au negative charge. This fact reflects into a general trend where metal-supported oxide films displaying a large work function (i.e., deep empty states) tend to bind K cations strongly, while supports with small work function (i.e., shallow donor states) strongly stabilize Au in anionic form. The correlation between adsorption energy and work function is not strong enough to neglect several other aspects related to chemical and morphological properties of the specific oxide/metal interface. The case of Pt is completely different: here, covalent contributions to the bonding prevail, and the bond strength depends on factors such as the surface morphology and local atomic coordination, rather than the support's work function

Sudden onset of Cotard’s syndrome as a clinical sign of brain tumor

Letter to the editor[Excerpt] We report the clinical case where the sudden onset of a Cotard syndrome in a 69 year old lady lead to the discovery of a multifocal glioblastoma in the right temporo-parietal lobe. Cotard’s syndrome is a rare psychiatric disorder in which the afflicted patient believes he or she is dead. These nihilistic thoughts are the expression of a rare syndrome first described by Jules Cotard in late XIX century. The Cotard’s syndrome has been studied and it seems that its psychopathology can be ascribed to the temporoparietal cortex. Although the Cotard’s syndrome is not part of the DSM-V it is common in psychiatric literature and is included in ICD-10-CM within code F22. It has been described associated with organic lesions and atrophy of the non-dominant temporo-parietal cortex, in pathologies like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia1, subdural hemorrhage2, multiple sclerosis, brain atrophy3 and cerebral infarction4 among others5-7. We observed the case of a female patient, 69 years old, with no relevant past medical history, that was admitted to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford (UK) with an episode of numbness in the left hand and an episode of dizziness whilst at home, duration of symptoms was of 15 minutes and then resolved entirely. She had no history of head trauma. Neurological exam was unremarkable and the stroke team felt a CT scan was not required, however she failed occupational therapy assessment and was not sent home.

Simplified user poll and experience report language (SUPER): implementation and application

    Get PDF
Biological computing is generally organized as standalone implementation on a PC-type computer or on a central facility (e.g. a university computer center). Services provided by central facilities need to be tailored to the user community. Unless very work-intensive individual contacts are used, the feedback must be collected with generalized tools, such as questionnaires distributed in the form of a newslettter. We have developed a method to have such polls automated and tailored, as well as having multiple-choice questions combined with branching after fundamental questions. As the evaluation of the results needs to know the questions asked, we have also included a method to process the answers and give detailed tables on the answers. SUPER was applied in a poll to query the academic usership in Switzerland on the usage of molecular biology database
