A new test procedure to validate tensile dynamic mechanical properties of sheet metals and alloys in automotive crash applications

    Get PDF
A thin walled open channel beam subjected to a 3-point bend and constant velocity boundary condition is investigated to establish its potential to validate material performance for automotive crash applications. Specifically quantitative validation of material data determined from high speed tensile testing and qualitative validation of material resistance to fracture in crash components. Open channel beams are fabricated from structural grade sheet steel and aluminium alloy and tested at quasi-static and higher speeds up to 10 m/s and in all cases, deformation develops a plastic hinge. This paper describes development of the validation test procedure, specifically design of specimen, system of measurement and boundary conditions using numerical and experimental techniques. The new test procedure will increase confidence in materials modelling and reduce the risk to introduce new advanced high strength materials into automotive crash structures

Vaccines: The Controversies and Effects Surrounding the MMR Vaccine

    Get PDF
The MMR vaccine serves to prevent the onset of severe illness and transmission of measles, mumps, and rubella. Vaccines benefit an individual by strengthening their immunity to a virus or bacteria through a small or weakened introduction of the disease in the body. However, in recent years, people have blamed the MMR vaccine for the development of several health risks in children, namely autism. Although multiple studies have indicated that there exists no link between the MMR vaccine and autism, some parents choose not to vaccinate their children due to misinformation or lack of education. This thesis seeks to explore important concepts in vaccination as well as demonstrate the lack of correlation between the MMR vaccine and the onset of autism

School Social Workers’ Perspectives on Working with GLBT Youth

    Get PDF
Past research has suggested that GLBT youth are at an increased risk for mental health issues including suicide. The purpose of this study was to examine school social workers’ perspectives of their role in working with GLBT youth through an online survey with school social workers currently working in middle and high schools. Most of the participants reported sometimes observing homophobic expressions or remarks and rarely observing verbal abuse based on sexual orientation in their school environment. Likewise, participants reported rarely observing physical harassment and never observing physical abuse of students because of their sexual orientation within their school environment. Roles identified by the school social workers included: being an ally, providing counseling, providing referrals, advocating for the implementation of support groups, and being an advocate for GLBT youth. The majority of participants were neutral about their role as facilitators of support groups for GLBT youth, since they identified others such as teachers or students themselves as effective group facilitators. This study has implications for social work practice. School social workers reported their active roles as advocates and service providers as critical ways in which they had a positive impact on the school environment for GLBT youth. In order to further develop our understanding of school social workers’ perspectives in working with GLBT youth future research should include a larger sample size and a wider range of school settings

Cohomological Kernels for Cyclic by Cyclic Semi-Direct Product Extensions

Let FF be a field and EE an extension of FF with [E:F]=d[E:F]=d where the characteristic of FF is zero or prime to dd. We assume μd2F\mu_{d^2}\subset F where μd2\mu_{d^2} are the d2d^2th roots of unity. This paper studies the problem of determining the cohomological kernel Hn(E/F):=ker(Hn(F,μd)Hn(E,μd))H^n(E/F):=\ker(H^n(F,\mu_d) \rightarrow H^n(E,\mu_d)) (Galois cohomology with coefficients in the ddth roots of unity) when the Galois closure of EE is a semi-direct product of cyclic groups. The main result is a six-term exact sequence determining the kernel as the middle map and is based on tools of Positelski. When n=2n=2 this kernel is the relative Brauer group Br(E/F){\rm Br}(E/F), the classes of central simple algebras in the Brauer group of FF split in the field EE. The work of Aravire and Jacob which calculated the groups Hpmn(E/F)H^n_{p^m}(E/F) in the case of semidirect products of cyclic groups in characteristic pp, provides motivation for this work

Modelling self-piercing riveted joint failures in automotive crash structures

This paper describes a new model and method to predict Self-Piercing Riveted (SPR) joint interlock failures in aluminium sheet at crash speeds using explicit finite element simulation. SPR interlock failure is dependent on rivet direction, which is included in the model. A mesh independent approach is adopted for connection model which is capable of industrial application at the full vehicle crash analysis level. The paper provides an overview of the approach to validate connection model; typically by developing detailed physics based models of various joint configurations supported with high speed experimental data, through to model capable of industrial application. The framework to validate connection model for use in crash simulation tools is expected to have broader applicatio
