[Excerpt] While the working public desires paid leave, the vast majority of businesses don’t want to fund it, and do not want the government mandating they be responsible. This lack of funding maintains the disadvantaged position of women in the workplace

As global organizations flatten hierarchies in an effort to run lean, dynamic middle managers play an increasingly important role. The best companies emphasize succession planning, requiring leadership take a determined and disciplined approach to help leaders develop and rise within their organizations. As a means of investment, firms have established clear career paths and provided career development experiences for their organization’s highest potentials. High-performing organizations have narrowed their focus to foster and develop the following key competencies: Change management capabilities are the top priority for high-potentials’ professional development. They should be prepared to influence and drive performance in a dynamic environment, where the only true constant is change. A leadership mindset is equally important for middle managers looking to advance in their career. Consistently, organizations are redefining the term “leader” to apply at multiple levels, and not just at the highest level. This includes the capabilities to make tough decisions in ambiguous business environments. Communication skills play a pivotal role in managing horizontal integration in complex organizations. The need to clearly and effectively communicate both up and down in the organizations is paramount. Possessing an understanding of team dynamics should also be a high priority. The capability to lead and develop talent is also essential for maintaining momentum for the future growth

Stayley’s The Rival Theatres and Metatheatre

Theatre rivalry in Ireland in the 1700s has been described by stage historians such as William Clark, La Tourette Stockwell and, more recently, John Greene and Gladys Clark. A famous case involves the Smock Alley and Aungier Street companies, which ultimately were united in the 1743-44 season. Little is known, however, about the metatheatrical content of playtexts regarding rivalry in Dublin and London, such as The Rival Theatres (1759), by George Stayley, an actor and playwright who has been ignored by scholarship. This paper is about him, his context of production and his pretexts, which can only be studied in rare books and have been the subject of a postdoctoral project I developed as a Fellow at the Folger Shakespeare Library (Washington D.C./ 2001-02). Aspects that I have stressed include the role of audience preferences and of business constraints in the shaping of content and form, provided the tensions between high culture (notably Shakespearean) and the popular genres (the farce in particular) that gained space and visibility in the 1700s.Theatre rivalry in Ireland in the 1700s has been described by stage historians such as William Clark, La Tourette Stockwell and, more recently, John Greene and Gladys Clark. The Effects of Equine Assisted Learning on Emotional Intelligence Competencies and Leadership Skills Jade Rauen Dr. Kelly L. Leigers, PhD, OTR/L, Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy Since the development and understanding of the term emotional intelligence (EI), researchers and businessmen alike have strived to find a way to improve EI competencies. Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) is a branch of Equine Therapy that uses the horse to facilitate change in humans. In recent years, EAL has been applied to the field of leadership development. Can a horse intrinsically instill competencies that effect leadership skills in humans? There is limited literature available on this subject, therefore, the aim of this study stood to add to the body of knowledge and advocate the need for future research. This study issued a questionnaire to 32 participants of an Equine Guided Leadership Education (EGLE) workshop coached by Lissa Pohl based out of Lexington, Kentucky whose agenda focused on EI concepts that build leadership skills. A thematic analysis of the responses was conducted. Results indicated that Equine-Assisted Learning may be an effective means of developing emotional intelligence competencies, specifically self-awareness and social-awareness, regardless of age, gender, or level of previous experience of the participant. However, since a comparison group was unavailable no direct conclusions can be drawn regarding its efficacy in comparison to a traditional classroom setting. Keywords: equine-assisted learning, leadership development, emotional intelligenc

    Sustainability: an interdisciplinary field

    Get PDF
Discussed herein is the interdisciplinary nature of the sustainability sciences field. Through a critical historical account of so-called rationalisation of life and science, it is recognised that the economic growth model that prevailed over the last few centuries led to a disjunctive dissociation of our social systems from the natural systems, which now figures as a root cause of unsustainability. The same rationalisation arguably provoked the fragmentation of knowledge into more and more specialised disciplines, as part of a scientific framework that cannot now be readily applied to deal with current pressing socioenvironmental problems. It is argued that interdisciplinarity is the only academic response capable of achieving the reintegration of knowledge required to address the sustainability paradigm, as compromises are sought between what is essential, desired and possible, both within and without academia.
