Ultracold dipolar gases - a challenge for experiments and theory

We present a review of recent results concerning the physics of ultracold trapped dipolar gases. In particular, we discuss the Bose-Einstein condensation for dipolar Bose gases and the BCS transition for dipolar Fermi gases. In both cases we stress the dominant role of the trap geometry in determining the properties of the system. We present also results concerning bosonic dipolar gases in optical lattices and the possibility of obtaining variety of different quantum phases in such case. Finally, we analyze various possible routes towards achieving ultracold dipolar gases.Comment: This paper is based on the lecture given by M. Lewenstein at the Nobel Symposium ''Coherence and Condensation in Quantum Systems'', Gothesburg, 4-7.12.200

A review of the literature examined 5 different models studying each one of them: a) meta – analysis, b) differential, c) neo - Darwinian, d) neurocognitive and, e) motor control. The results from all studies show insufficient empirical evidence to establish whether there is a common etiology between the disorders that they have considered. As a conclusion we show one empirical study to explore a possible spectrum of violence based on dysfunctional impulsivity between borderline personality and intermittent explosive disorder

Sowing date and water stress effects on sole and intercropped maize/pea cultivars under controlled conditions

Controlled experiments were conducted in Glasshouse 7 at the Experimental Grounds, Plant Sciences Laboratories, Whiteknights, The University of Reading, in 2000 and 2001. Relative sowing date and water stress on maize and pea sole and intercrops were investigated under controlled conditions in 2 years. A two-factor in a completely randomized design was used in both years, comprising two varieties of maize and pea with contrasting morphologies and sowing pea simultaneously with maize or 14 days after maize as well as two levels of water stress. The two maize varieties were ‘Nancis’ with erectophile leaf habit, and ‘Sophy’ with a planophile leaf habit; the two pea varieties were ‘Maro’, a normal-leaved pea, and ‘Princess’, a semi-leafless pea. In the first-year study in 2000, intercropping maize with pea was generally more advantageous than when either crop was sown sole. Delaying the time of intercropping of pea by 14 days after sowing maize increased the kernel yield of maize compared to when intercropped simultaneously. The best intercropping combination in this study, using the Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) index, was when the normalleaved pea ‘Maro’ was intercropped with the erectophile leaf maize ‘Nancis’ 14 days later. In the second-year study in 2001, intercropping and water stress reduced intercropped maize yield, but the reduction was greater when maize was intercropped with the normal-leaved pea ‘Maro’ (212%) than the semi-leafless pea ‘Princess’ (127%). Water stress increased the erectophile-leaved maize ‘Nancis’ yield when intercropped with the normal-leaved pea ‘Maro’ (52%), due to an increase in partitioning of dry matter to generative organs compared to the vegetative organs. All intercropping combinations were advantageous, using the averages of the LER and Area-Time Equivalent Ratio (ATER) indices; but the benefits were slightly higher with the planophile-leaved maize ‘Sophy’ than the erectophile-leaved maize ‘Nancis’

Future Educators’ Gender Norms, Sexuality, and Reproductive Health.

This investigation explored gender-related norms, sexuality, and reproductive health among education students in a government university in Samar, Philippines. A descriptive-analytical design of study was adopted for this investigation and data were collected over a period of five months. Five hundred fifty (550) education students who were enrolled in the different year level completed the modified John Clelands’ Illustrative Questionnaire for Young People. Results indicated that 14.73% of the students reported having had early sexual experience where in 69.14 % had it unplanned. Among sexually active students, only 17.28% used contraception, with condoms and withdrawal as the most popular choices. Respondents were also found to have some misconceptions regarding HIV/AIDS and STI’s. Result also showed that dating was still acceptable, however, the idea of abortion and sexual coercion were considered wrong. No significant differences in the knowledge about HIV/AIDS and STI’s and gender norms were found across year level. Findings suggest a greater need for education, support and advocacy relative to sexuality so as to create a more positive school environment conducive for holistic growth and development of all students. Thus, school administrators should improve/enhance existing policies and programs relative to reproductive health among college students of the University such as health promotion activities, sexuality education, counseling and alike
