    Education for Liberation: Community Workshops to Recognize Human Trafficking

    Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) is a highly profitable industry that plaques countries throughout the globe. There is no community left unscathed when it comes to who and who is not affected. The underlying issue is that many individuals do not understand that commercial sexual exploitation of children is taking place right here in their communities. The literature review will highlight three different theories, examine existing policy, and review preventative measures, to gain a deeper understanding of CSEC. The workshop implemented ways to increase overall awareness and education surrounding CSEC for local community members. More specifically, community members worked to identify some of the root causes, warning signs, effects, and recent developments about CSEC within communities

    Counting problems lead naturally to integer sequences. For example if one asks for the number of subsets of an nn-set, the answer is 2n2^n, or the integer sequence 1, 2, 4, 8, ldots1,~2,~4,~8,~ldots. Conversely, given an integer sequence, or part of it, one may ask if there is an associated counting problem. There might be several different counting problems that produce the same integer sequence. To illustrate the nature of mathematical research involving integer sequences, we will consider Escher\u27s counting problem and a generalization, as well as counting problems associated with the Catalan numbers, and the Collatz conjecture. We will also discuss the purpose of the On-Line-Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences

    Necrotizing pneumonia and sepsis due to Clostridium perfringens: a case report

    Clostridia are uncommon causes of pleuropulmonary infection. Clostridial species infecting the pleuropulmonary structures characteristically cause a necrotizing pneumonia with involvement of the pleura. Most cases have iatrogenic causes usually due to invasive procedures into the pleural cavity, such as thoracentesis or thoracotomy, or penetrating chest injuries. Rarely clostridia pleuropulmonary infections are not related to these factors. The clinical course of pleuropulmonary clostridial infections can be very variable, but they may be rapid and fatal. We report a rare case of necrotizing pneumonia and sepsis due to Clostridium perfringens not related to iatrogenic causes or injuries in an 82 years old woman

    Synthesis of novel structural hybrids between aza-heterocycles and azelaic acid moiety with a specific activity on osteosarcoma cells

    Nine compounds bearing pyridinyl (or piperidinyl, benzimidazolyl, benzotriazolyl) groups bound to an azelayl moiety through an amide bond were synthesized. The structural analogy with some histone deacetylase inhibitors inspired their syntheses, seeking new selective histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi). The azelayl moiety recalls part of 9-hydroxystearic acid, a cellular lipid showing antiproliferative activity toward cancer cells with HDAC as a molecular target. Azelayl derivatives bound to a benzothiazolyl moiety further proved to be active as HDACi. The novel compounds were tested on a panel of both normal and tumor cell lines. Non-specific induction of cytotoxicity was observed in the normal cell line, while three of them induced a biological effect only on the osteosarcoma (U2OS) cell line. One of them induced a change in nuclear shape and size. Cell-cycle alterations are associated with post-transcriptional modification of both H2/H3 and H4 histones. In line with recent studies, revealing unexpected HDAC7 function in osteoclasts, molecular docking studies on the active molecules predicted their proneness to interact with HDAC7. By reducing side effects associated with the action of the first-generation inhibitors, the herein reported compounds, thus, sound promising as selective HDACi

    Assessment for late developmental hip dysplasia in a cohort of infants with risk factors and normal hip ultrasound

    BackgroundDevelopmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a known orthopedic pathology of newborns that, if not diagnosed and treated, can lead to debilitating long-term consequences. Ultrasound has proven to be an effective method for the early diagnosis of this condition. Recently, reports of late DDH in populations at risk (breech presentation) and after negative ultrasound examination have emerged in the literature.AimThe objective of the study was to assess the possible appearance of late DDH in Italian children with risk factors but negative ultrasound screening.Materials and methodsWe selected patients with risk factors for DDH and a negative hip ultrasound from the medical records of children referred to the Hip Ultrasound Clinic (Rome, Italy) from January 2018 to November 2021. To identify possible cases of late DDH, from February 2022 to July 2022, all patients who met the inclusion criteria were submitted to orthopedic follow-up clinical evaluation. In the case of a pathological objective examination, radiography was performed.ResultsFifty-five patients (52.7% female, 52.7% with breech presentation, and 41.8% with a positive family history) met the inclusion criteria. The median age of gait onset was 13 months. The median age of orthopedic follow-up examination was 45 months. Only three patients (5.5%) had a pathological examination, but no x-ray were pathological.ConclusionOur study has not documented cases of late DDH. Considering the small study population and the only clinical follow-up, further studies are needed to clarify the possible late development of this condition

    In Vivo Mapping of Vascular Inflammation Using Multimodal Imaging

    Plaque vulnerability to rupture has emerged as a critical correlate to risk of adverse coronary events but there is as yet no clinical method to assess plaque stability in vivo. In the search to identify biomarkers of vulnerable plaques an association has been found between macrophages and plaque stability--the density and pattern of macrophage localization in lesions is indicative of probability to rupture. In very unstable plaques, macrophages are found in high densities and concentrated in the plaque shoulders. Therefore, the ability to map macrophages in plaques could allow noninvasive assessment of plaque stability. We use a multimodality imaging approach to noninvasively map the distribution of macrophages in vivo. The use of multiple modalities allows us to combine the complementary strengths of each modality to better visualize features of interest. Our combined use of Positron Emission Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (PET/MRI) allows high sensitivity PET screening to identify putative lesions in a whole body view, and high resolution MRI for detailed mapping of biomarker expression in the lesions.Macromolecular and nanoparticle contrast agents targeted to macrophages were developed and tested in three different mouse and rat models of atherosclerosis in which inflamed vascular plaques form spontaneously and/or are induced by injury. For multimodal detection, the probes were designed to contain gadolinium (T1 MRI) or iron oxide (T2 MRI), and Cu-64 (PET). PET imaging was utilized to identify regions of macrophage accumulation; these regions were further probed by MRI to visualize macrophage distribution at high resolution. In both PET and MR images the probes enhanced contrast at sites of vascular inflammation, but not in normal vessel walls. MRI was able to identify discrete sites of inflammation that were blurred together at the low resolution of PET. Macrophage content in the lesions was confirmed by histology.The multimodal imaging approach allowed high-sensitivity and high-resolution mapping of biomarker distribution and may lead to a clinical method to predict plaque probability to rupture
