Secrecy in Educational Practices: Enacting Nested Black Boxes in Cheating and Deception Detection Systems

    Get PDF
This paper covers secrecy from the vantage point of recent technological initiatives designed to detect cheating and deception in educational contexts as well as to monitor off-campus social media speech code violations. Many of these systems are developed and implemented by third-party corporate entities who claim practices to be proprietary and secret. The outsourcers involved in these efforts have provided one level of secrecy and educational administrators involved yet another level, thus constructing nested black boxes. Also discussed in this paper is the “paranoid style” of administration, often supported by the surveillance and construction of rosters of potential non-conformists, such as alleged cheaters and speech code violators. The educational technologies described in this article are increasingly applied to workplace practices, with young people being trained in what is deemed acceptable conduct. Secrecy can serve to alter the character of relationships within the educational institutions involved as well as inside the workplaces in which the approaches are increasingly being integrated

Comparative study of Portland cement-based and zeolite-based concretes in terms of hexavalent chromium leaching

    Get PDF
The paper presents the results of the leaching study of Portland cement-based and zeolite-based concretes regarding water soluble hexavalent chromium. Three leaching water media (distilled water, rain water, and Britton-Robinson buffer) of various pH values were under investigation. The correlation between pH and leached-out concentrations of chromium was not confirmed. The content of hexavalent water-soluble chromium in leachates of zeolite-based concretes was found to be higher than that in leachates of Portland cement-based samples

Psychological Abuse in Same-Sex Couples Compared to Heterosexual Couples: Implications for Depression Outcomes

    Get PDF
Many studies have documented the mental health repercussions of intimate partner violence (IPV) on heterosexual individuals, with depression being one of the most prevalent outcomes of IPV victimization (Campbell, 2002; Golding, 1999; Mechanic, Weaver, Resick, 2008). There are very few studies that examine the mental health outcomes of IPV within same-sex relationships (Gehring & Vaske, 2017), because much research is rooted in traditional frameworks. In order to bridge gaps in the research, this project will extend work on IPV to focus on LG populations to examine the relationship between recent psychological abuse and mental health outcomes, specifically depression. Participants comprised of 176 community and undergraduate young adults who answered survey questions about sexual orientation, IPV, and depression. Results found that psychological IPV victimization significantly associated with depressive symptoms (β=.55, p\u3c0.001). When examining gender, results indicated that males experienced higher rates of depression when they were victims of psychological IPV (β=-.16, p=0.01). Due to being underpowered, analysis could not adequately examine differences by sexual orientation. Implications of this study suggest a need for more interventions and advocacy for male individuals who are experiencing IPV as many resources are allocated to women and there is less awareness about men as victims

Privacy and Freedom of Information in Organizational Contexts: Human Rights Issues in an Era of Big Data (abstract)

    Get PDF
Large-scale information collection and dissemination practices are acquiring greater economic and political significance in the everyday lives of citizens. Privacy and freedom of information issues are becoming more complex as “big data” and machine learning replace traditional forms of dossier collection, statistical analysis, and archiving. This paper explores the varieties of human rights issues that are emerging. The enormous amounts of data associated with social media systems and mobile applications have increased the number of facial recognition, locational tracking, socioeconomic analysis, and related practices being conducted by corporations as well as governmental agencies. Often corporations and governmental agencies couple their efforts, which can magnify the difficulty of discerning legitimate and actionable citizen concerns and mapping practical modes for addressing them. Citizens who pose requests as to what kinds of information is being held about them by organizations and as to how it is being used can be frustrated by the lack of specificity in the responses they receive (if any). Privacy structures can often hurt individuals’ chances of obtaining information rather than assist them, providing barriers that are largely designed to protect organizations rather than increase organizational transparency. This presentation outlines a set of recent cases that relate human rights involving free movement and access to needed resources to concerns dealing with privacy and freedom of information. It emphases facial recognition and socioeconomic analysis initiatives along with geographic information system (GIS) and related locational applications. It projects some of the consequences for human rights that technological developments toward a cashless society (with applications such as Apple Pay) may engender. The presentation also relates the technological initiatives described in this paragraph to various rhetorics about terrorism and national security

Depraved, Distracted, Disabled, or Just “Pack Rats”? Workplace Hoarding Personas in Physical and Virtual Realms

    Get PDF
This article provides some potential directions in exploring the construction of the persona of the “hoarder” and addresses how such a persona can move to the foreground of an individual’s set of workplace-related personas. Hoarding throws into relief some critical concerns about the social standings of individuals in workplaces and the extent to which they have autonomous expression. The article frames hoarding in terms of its capacity to externalize particular social issues (such as environmental problems) and generate public discourse, and examines both physical hoardings (books and papers in academic and office settings, for example) and hoardings of virtual goods (such as digital music, video files, and pornographic images). Virtual hoardings have been constructed as problematic as they create barriers to the free flow of information in the workplace and can challenge organizational interests related to intellectual property concerns. Hoarding as a whole is becoming more tightly circumscribed as a workplace and community condition, in part because the ability to manage physical and virtual items in confined settings is considered central to many forms of competent societal functioning. An assortment of human resource management initiatives to mitigate hoarding concerns has developed, including the consideration of hoarding as a disability. However, hoarding behavior is increasing creating problems for those who are searching for simple definitions or straightforward diagnostic criteria. This article also provides some structures for analysis of the class-related and economic dimensions of workplace hoarding personas, and explores potential implications of lifelogging initiatives and hoarding acceptance approaches

Face Recognition Methods Based on Feedforward Neural Networks, Principal Component Analysis and Self-Organizing Map

In this contribution, human face as biometric is considered. Original method of feature extraction from image data is introduced using MLP (multilayer perceptron) and PCA (principal component analysis). This method is used in human face recognition system and results are compared to face recognition system using PCA directly, to a system with direct classification of input images by MLP and RBF (radial basis function) networks, and to a system using MLP as a feature extractor and MLP and RBF networks in the role of classifier. Also a two-stage method for face recognition is presented, in which Kohonen self-organizing map is used as a feature extractor. MLP and RBF network are used as classifiers. In order to obtain deeper insight into presented methods, also visualizations of internal representation of input data obtained by neural networks are presented
