Until One Resembles the Other

A written accompaniment to Chad Mundie’s thesis exhibition titled Until One Resembles the Other, conceived during the years 2021-22 and installed at The Anderson Gallery, Richmond from April 9-22nd. The following writing explores themes of labor within the home, generational knowledge, interiority, exteriority, and emotional residue through a series of essays surrounding areas of interest within my practice. Aspects of MHD wave propagation in solar atmospheric studies

The theme of this thesis is ideal linear MHD wave propagation in structured media, using models relevant to structures in the solar atmosphere. We derive dispersion relations governing the ideal linear MHD modes for stationary states which are discretely structured in velocity and other plasma properties, in a direction transverse to the magnetic field, with field-aligned steady flow; the discrete structures considered are the single interface, uniform slab and uniform cylinder. This represents an extension of earlier models for the static case (Edwin 1984), by the inclusion of structured flows. The basic effects of flow are described, drawing on a discussion of the dispersion relations. The dispersion relations for the case of incompressible surface modes are examined in detail. We identify the qualitative effects of flow, including the onset of instability, by tracing the evolution of stable solutions and their propagation windows, as the relative flow is increased. Our analysis is presented in terms of a general formulation applicable to all three geometries (interface, slab and cylinder), revealing the combined role of dispersion and the ratio of densities in the two media. We go on to consider the relevance of the incompressible approximation to compressible surface modes, with particular reference to the static case of a single interface one side of which is field-free. We present and investigate analytical solutions for several special cases. The properties of the solutions obtained are compared with those for the equivalent incompressible case. Finally, we turn to the topic of global oscillations of quiescent prominences. A uniform slab model (Joarder 1993) yields, under conditions appropriate to the prominence-coronal inhomogeneity with the magnetic field threading the prominence being line-tied in the photosphere, modes which are analogous to the oscillations of a uniform string loaded with a point mass, and a formula approximating the period is given. We investigate the robustness of this formula for various plasma density profiles, assessing the applicability of the results from the uniform slab calculation to more realistic density profiles of the prominence-coronal inhomogeneity

Learning through the eyes of others: Access Agriculture’s experiences with farmer-training videos in agricultural extension and education

This publication comes six years after Access Agriculture was created to enable south-south exchange and access to quality audio-visual training materials for smallholder farmers, herders and fishers, and other users of natural resources. It brings together some of the varied experiences of Access Agriculture’s many partners in producing, translating, distributing and using training videos. These experiences have been gathered from reports, academic research, blogs, stories and interviews with people from Africa, Asia and Europe – who all have in common a passion for improving agriculture. It also draws on a series of stories published in a sister publication from CTA, “A Passion for Video”, that were written in 2015 during Access Agriculture’s conference to celebrate its first three years

Starsat: A space astronomy facility

Preliminary design and analyses of a versatile telescope for Spacelab missions are presented. The system is an all-reflective Korsch three-mirror telescope with excellent performance characteristics over a wide field and a broad spectral range, making it particularly suited for ultraviolet observations. The system concept is evolved around the utilization of existing hardware and designs which were developed for other astronomy space projects

Since 2013, Access Agriculture has been training young professionals from various organisations in six African countries to make farmer-to-farmer videos. The videos are a way of moving ideas faster, and more clearly, beyond borders. The Access Agriculture website hosts the videos by these young professionals, and by other agencies, if the videos meet Access Agriculture’s quality and style standards. Access Agriculture encourages all organisations working in developing countries to invest in translating videos available on the website into any language. Access Agriculture offers a fee-based translation service to anyone interested in using quality videos in their own farmer training programmes.
