Immune function and parasite resistance in male and polymorphic female Coenagrion puella
Background:
Colour polymorphisms are widespread and one of the prime examples is the colour
polymorphism in female coenagrionid damselflies: one female morph resembles the male colour
(andromorph) while one, or more, female morphs are described as typically female (gynomorph).
However, the selective pressures leading to the evolution and maintenance of this polymorphism
are not clear. Here, based on the hypothesis that coloration and especially black patterning can be
related to resistance against pathogens, we investigated the differences in immune function and
parasite resistance between the different female morphs and males.
Results:
Our studies of immune function revealed no differences in immune function between the
female morphs but between the sexes in adult damselflies. In an experimental infection females
infected shortly after emergence showed a higher resistance against a fungal pathogen than males,
however female morphs did not differ in resistance. In a field sample of adult damselflies we did not
find differences in infection rates with watermites and gregarines.
Conclusion:
With respect to resistance and immune function 'andromorph' blue females of
Coenagrion puella do not resemble the males. Therefore the colour polymorphism in coenagrionid
damselflies is unlikely to be maintained by differences in immunity
Writing and developing a play: from initial idea to final draft & Roses on the wire
Writing and Developing a Play: From Initial Idea to Final Draft is a critical essay that explores the creation of a full-length play in the context of the MPhil (B) Playwriting Studies course. The essay looks at such aspects as the use of dramaturgical elements, including character, language, and time and space; cultural and historical research; identifying and solving creative problems; and justifying creative decisions. The essay is then followed by the full-length play written by me for the course, Roses on the Wire
Reify Your Collection Queries for Modularity and Speed!
Modularity and efficiency are often contradicting requirements, such that
programers have to trade one for the other. We analyze this dilemma in the
context of programs operating on collections. Performance-critical code using
collections need often to be hand-optimized, leading to non-modular, brittle,
and redundant code. In principle, this dilemma could be avoided by automatic
collection-specific optimizations, such as fusion of collection traversals,
usage of indexing, or reordering of filters. Unfortunately, it is not obvious
how to encode such optimizations in terms of ordinary collection APIs, because
the program operating on the collections is not reified and hence cannot be
analyzed.
We propose SQuOpt, the Scala Query Optimizer--a deep embedding of the Scala
collections API that allows such analyses and optimizations to be defined and
executed within Scala, without relying on external tools or compiler
extensions. SQuOpt provides the same "look and feel" (syntax and static typing
guarantees) as the standard collections API. We evaluate SQuOpt by
re-implementing several code analyses of the Findbugs tool using SQuOpt, show
average speedups of 12x with a maximum of 12800x and hence demonstrate that
SQuOpt can reconcile modularity and efficiency in real-world applications.Comment: 20 page

Did my heart just leap or sink?:The role of personality for the relation between cardiac interoception and well-being
Interoceptive accuracy (IAc), the ability to perceive signals from within the body, has been linked to many beneficial health outcomes but also to psychopathologies such as anxiety disorders. Therefore, its relation to a person's subjective well-being (SWB) is unclear. Here, we predicted that individuals who are prone to interpreting interoceptive signals positively benefit from IAc and exhibit higher SWB. In contrast, individuals with predispositions towards negative interpretations suffer from it, resulting in lower SWB. Participants completed a measure of cardiac IAc, measures of extraversion, neuroticism, optimism and pessimism as personality traits that have been related to positive and negative attributional styles, and various measures of well-being. Psychiatric and physical well-being were predicted by the interaction between optimism/pessimism and IAc. While for optimistic participants, IAc did not predict higher well-being, for pessimistic individuals, it predicted lower well-being. These findings shed light on the role of interoception for SWB and its adaptiveness for individuals with different personalities
Konvolutionäre neuronale Netze in der industriellen Bildverarbeitung und Robotik
In the first part of this dissertation, a framework for the design of a CNN for FPGAs is presented, consisting of a preprocessing algorithm, an augmentation technique, a custom quantization scheme and a pruning step of the CNN. The combination of conventional image processing with neural networks is shown in the second part by an example from robotics, where an image-based visual servoing process is successfully conducted for a gripping process of a robot
Empathy effects: towards an understanding of empathy in British and American Holocaust theatre
This thesis considers how and why empathy is important in Anglo-American Holocaust theatre, utilising close readings of selected plays, existing theories of empathy and Holocaust representation, and authorial formulations of new empathic definitions. The first chapter examines the empathic responses of Frances Goodrich & Albert Hackett and Meyer Levin to Anne Frank's Diary of a Young Girl, and how these subsequently affected their stage adaptations of the book. The second chapter interrogates how spectator empathy with child protagonists is problematic in terms of the 'Holocaust fairytale' narrative often used, leading to spectator misinformation in the context of historical fact. The third chapter investigates British critical responses to Bent in both 1979 and 1990 in terms of 'precocious testimony', establishing that Bent was only received in its proper socio-political context upon the emergence of overt contemporary queer oppression. The final chapter explores how 'empty empathy', engendered by 'Holocaust etiquette', can be challenged through inverting Holocaust signs, or 'balagan', in 'Holocaust cabarets' to evoke alternative audience responses. The thesis concludes that empathy is central in Holocaust theatre, enabling spectators to identify and engage with representative characters - fulfilling the didactic purpose of Holocaust theatre in teaching about the genocide and encouraging anti-prejudicial views
