    Neurovascular-anastomosed muscle grafts in rabbits: Functional deficits result from tendon repair

    In rabbits, 9 g rectus femoris (RFM) muscles were grafted with tendon repair and with (1) nerves and blood vessels intact, (2) nerves intact and blood vessels anastomosed, or (3) nerves and blood vessels anastomosed. The influences of tendon, nerve, and vascular repair on the functional capabilities of grafts were compared 15–120 days after grafting. Data were collected on the mass, total protein content, oxidative capacity, maximum force development, and fatigability of grafts and control RFM muscles. When stabilized 90–120 days after grafting, mean values for the three types of grafts were not significantly different. Compared with values for control RFM muscles, each type of graft had significantly lower mean values for mass, total protein content, and maximum force, but the grafts were more resistant to fatigue. In RFM grafts, nerve and vascular repair do not contribute significantly to the impairments.     Large-Scale Sleep Condition Analysis Using Selfies from Social Media

    Sleep condition is closely related to an individual's health. Poor sleep conditions such as sleep disorder and sleep deprivation affect one's daily performance, and may also cause many chronic diseases. Many efforts have been devoted to monitoring people's sleep conditions. However, traditional methodologies require sophisticated equipment and consume a significant amount of time. In this paper, we attempt to develop a novel way to predict individual's sleep condition via scrutinizing facial cues as doctors would. Rather than measuring the sleep condition directly, we measure the sleep-deprived fatigue which indirectly reflects the sleep condition. Our method can predict a sleep-deprived fatigue rate based on a selfie provided by a subject. This rate is used to indicate the sleep condition. To gain deeper insights of human sleep conditions, we collected around 100,000 faces from selfies posted on Twitter and Instagram, and identified their age, gender, and race using automatic algorithms. Next, we investigated the sleep condition distributions with respect to age, gender, and race. Our study suggests among the age groups, fatigue percentage of the 0-20 youth and adolescent group is the highest, implying that poor sleep condition is more prevalent in this age group. For gender, the fatigue percentage of females is higher than that of males, implying that more females are suffering from sleep issues than males.     Translocation of the temporalis muscle for treatment of facial paralysis

    Our purpose was to characterize in the rhesus monkey the structure and function of vascularized temporalis muscle flaps innervated by the facial nerve after translocation into the site of the denervated zygomaticus muscle. Animals were killed at 28 to 120 days following translocation. Control data were obtained from the contralateral side. Twenty-eight days after translocation, the time to reach peak twitch tension and one-half relaxation time were 170% of control zygomaticus muscle. Contraction times decreased with time and reached control values by 100 days. Absolute isometric tetanic tension was not different between the flap (4.29 ± 1.28 newtons; X ± SEM) and control zygomaticus (3.95 ± 0.80 newtons). Succinate oxidase activity of the flap decreased from 279 ± 18 nl O 2 /mg protein/min to control zygomaticus values (98 ± 18) by 110 days. The type 1 fiber cross-sectional area of the flap was 52% of control temporalis muscle and 150% of control zygomaticus muscle ( P < 0.05).     Evaluating Microcounseling Training

    An evaluation research design was developed as an attempt to provide a more satisfactory approach to microcounseling training program evaluation. Trainee performance was measured three times during a counseling practicum, with microcounseling training occurring between the second and third observations. Trainee performance was compared to a predetermined standard for counselor behavior. Results were analyzed for both the differences between observations, and the degree of similarity to the model. Counseling behavior of trainees after microcounseling training was significantly different from their behavior prior to the training. After training they were more like the standard.     Assessing the greenness of environmental advertising claims made by multinational industrial firms

    Growing skepticism about green advertisements calls for a thorough investigation of the environmental claims made by firms. This is particularly important in the context of industrial and international markets, where research on the subject is virtually non-existent. By employing legitimacy theory, this article develops several research hypotheses linking various dimensions of environmental claims made in green advertisements (i.e., focal points, evaluation areas, leverage aspects, driving forces) with advertising greenness (i.e., shallow, moderate, deep). It then tests these hypotheses with data obtained from a content analysis of 383 green magazine advertisements by multinational firms producing industrial goods. In accord with legitimacy theory, the results indicate that, the stronger the greenness of an advertisement: (a) the greater the use of focal points relating to a product, processes, image, and facts; (b) the more specific, strong, substantive, and acceptable are the issues raised; (c) the higher the employment of rational, emotional, and moral points to leverage environmental matters; and (d) the sharper the driving forces relating to the planet and its flora, fauna, and human entities. Several important conclusions, managerial implications, and directions for future research are derived from these findings
