Solution Mapping Tools: Identifying a Bottom-Up Approach to Social Innovation
A bottom-up approach to social innovation arises from the issues at the root of the innovation, which usually originates in the lower middle class. An essential approach to design for social innovation is to manage projects with identifiable organizational stakeholders considering relationships in the context of power holders and empowering socially vulnerable and marginalized communities. In local contexts, community participation processes can support grassroots movements toward sustainable systems where the focus is on more complex situations. For a better understanding, the Solution Mapping Tool is explored in this paper through a case study of a workshop held in the least-developed region of Indonesia. The workshop focused on inventing a bamboo distillation device for Moke, a traditional alcoholic beverage made from fermented palm fruits. Using the Solution Mapping Tools, learners were inspired to explore and discover the diverse solutions that communities use and generate daily. The tool helps everyday solutions become visible and identifiable regarding needs, assets, problems and challenges, benefits, and opportunities for the future. The Solution Mapping Tools can also increase learners’ empathy towards people, including communities, by providing a place to learn about their daily lives, experiential knowledge, and context. This paper extends existing publications on distributing and learning about local assets as a pre-design process before applying a participatory-based approach.

Asteroseismological Observations of the Central Star of the Planetary Nebula NGC 1501
We report on a global CCD time-series photometric campaign to decode the
pulsations of the nucleus of the planetary nebula NGC1501. The star is hot and
hydrogen-deficient, similar to the pre-white-dwarf PG 1159 stars. NGC1501 shows
pulsational brightness variations of a few percent with periods ranging from 19
to 87 minutes. The variations are very complex, suggesting a pulsation spectrum
that requires a long unbroken time series to resolve. Our CCD photometry of the
star covers a two-week period in 1991 November, and used a global network of
observatories. We obtained nearly continuous coverage over an interval of one
week in the middle of the run. We have identified 10 pulsation periods, ranging
from 5235 s down to 1154 s. We find strong evidence that the modes are indeed
nonradial g-modes. The ratios of the frequencies of the largest-amplitude modes
agree with those expected for modes that are trapped by a density discontinuity
in the outer layers. We offer a model for the pulsation spectrum that includes
a common period spacing of 22.3 s and a rotation period of 1.17 days; the
period spacing allows us to assign a seismological mass of 0.55+/-0.03 Msun.Comment: 12 pages, AASTEX, 7 tables, 6 EPS figures, to appear in AJ, 12/96

The most plausible explanation of the cyclical period changes in close binaries: the case of the RS CVn-type binary WW Dra
We searched the orbital period changes in 182 EA-type (including the 101
Algol systems used by \cite{hal89}), 43 EB-type and 53 EW-type binaries with
known both the mass ratio and the spectral type of their secondary components.
We reproduced and improved the same diagram as Hall's (1989) according to the
new collected data. Our plots do not support the conclusion derived by
\cite{hal89} that all cases of cyclical period changes are restricted to
binaries having the secondary component with spectral types later than F5. The
presence of period changes also among stars with secondary component of early
type indicates that the magnetic activity is one cause, but not the only one,
for the period variation. It is discovered that cyclic period changes, likely
due to the presence of a third body are more frequent in EW-type binaries among
close binaries. Therefore, the most plausible explanation of the cyclical
period changes is the LTTE via the presence of a third body. By using the
century-long historical record of the times of light minimum, we analyzed the
cyclical period change in the Algol binary WW Dra. It is found that the orbital
period of the binary shows a cyclic variation
with an amplitude of . The cyclic oscillation
can be attributed to the LTTE via a third body with a mass no less than . However, no spectral lines of the third body were discovered
indicating that it may be a candidate black hole. The third body is orbiting
the binary at a distance shorter than 14.4 AU and it may play an important role
in the evolution of this system.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, published by MNRA
<Articles>Feeding a Crowd: Hybridity and the Social Infrastructure behind Street Food Creation in Bandung, Indonesia
Based on ethnographic research on street vendors' activities in Bandung city, this article attempts to uncover the production process of street food. Drawing on Simone's (2004) idea of people as infrastructure, the research focuses on street vending activities as a conjunction of heterogeneous activities and modes of production that becomes a platform to support the vendors' livelihood: for example, the ways in which vendors achieve efficiency in street food production. We need to consider, however, the roles of various actors surrounding the street vending activities that directly or indirectly contribute to the production process of street food, as well as the large network that is created as social infrastructure. This network is an outcome of the ability of vendors, for example, to engage in convivial interactions with customers, to create an intimate relationship with food suppliers, and to engage in "a form of labor exchange" with their neighbors. This article argues that such hybrid contributions on the part of street vendors are their efforts to stabilize the network in a fluid and adaptable way that makes a social infrastructure possible
