Determination of Curriculum Content for a Non-Engineering Doctoral Degree in Aviation

    Get PDF
The U.S. aviation industry has been and continues to be a rapid-growth sector of commerce. Educational and academic metamorphosis coincident with this growth is evident in the number of postsecondary educational institutions offering degrees in aviation. A recent publication of the Collegiate Aviation Guide (UAA, 1994a) listed more than 500 postsecondary institutions offering aviation programs. More than 200 are at the baccalaureate level or higher. Many, established in the past 10 years, coincide with the net industry growth rate

Regional dispersion of cooperation activities as success factor of innovation oriented SME

In this paper, we analyze the relationships between different types of innovation and collaboration, given the varying geographical distance of the latter. The study is based on the data of the research project 'KompNet 2011 - Factors determining the success of regional innovation networks', which examines the innovation activities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in and closely around Jena (Thuringia). The aim of this paper is to explore to what extent spatial reach of collaboration linkages determines innovation orientation and innovative behavior. That means: Innovation performance could be positively related to (a) to a high intensity of local collaboration, (b) the intensity of international collaboration or (c) neither regional nor (inter)national collaborations. In a first step we summarize the relevant literature which comprises aspects of our central subject under investigation. We additionally discuss the necessity of keeping in mind several control variables for theoretical and empirical reasons. In the following we present descriptive analyses relating to the regional reach of collaboration in general, the impact of collaboration on innovation and the links between the regional reach of cooperation and different forms of innovation, i.e. product, process, marketing and organizational innovation. In a final step we discuss the results of several regression models. We observe that there is no significant influence of the geographical variables on the innovative performance of SME. Therefore our findings suggest that innovative firms rely on collaboration partners at a variety of spatial distances. The results also show a significant and positive influence of the intensity of competition on the innovativeness of firms in all models. Furthermore product- and process innovations are created by firms with intensive cooperative activities to scientific institutions, while a wide variety of cooperation partners and a strong focus on quality leadership turns out to be important for the development of marketing- and organizational innovations. --cooperation,geographical reach, innovation, intensity of competition, marketing innovation, organizational innovation, process innovation, product innovation, quality leadership, regional dispersion,SME,spatial distance

Smart physics with an oscillating beverage can

    Get PDF
A digital learning-teaching environment is introduced in which undergraduate students are challenged to connect the basic physical concepts of oscillation, buoyancy and data analysis via an authentic experiment. The damped oscillation of a cylindrical body swimming upright in water is measured via the MEMS acceleration sensor of a wireless MCU SensorTag. The data are recorded with the app phyphox on a smartphone or tablet. The theoretical oscillation period and the experimentally determined periods obtained via different data analysis roots are found to agree showing an excellent theory-experiment interplay. The proposed experiment is suited for the physics home lab e.g. under the current pandemic situation or for open university courses as well as for physics lab courses

Smart physics to create kinematic data from GPS measurements

    Get PDF
An experimental exercise is presented where students explore the principal concepts of kinematics with the GPS sensor of their smartphone. It enables our students to record and analyze a self-performed complex movement independently. Students learn how to transform geographical into Cartesian coordinates and how to investigate movements in everyday life

Development of the EU Green Public Procurement (GPP) Criteria for Paints, Varnishes and Road Markings. Technical Report with final criteria.

    Get PDF
The Development of the Green Public Procurement (GPP) criteria for Paints, Varnishes and Road Markings is aimed at helping public authorities to ensure that paints, varnishes and road markings are procured in such a way that it delivers environmental improvements that contribute to European policy objectives for energy, chemical management and resource efficiency, as well as reducing life cycle costs. In order to identify the most significant improvement areas for criteria development an analysis has been carried out of the environmental and health impacts of manufacturing and using paints, varnishes and road markings. The most commonly used procurement processes have been also identified and are further addressed in the separate criteria document (published as a Staff Working Document of the Commission). Together these two documents aim to provide public authorities with orientation on how to effectively integrate these GPP criteria into their procurement processes.JRC.B.5-Circular Economy and Industrial Leadershi

Development and didactic analysis of smartphone-based experimental exercises for the smart physics lab

homework problems in an introductory mechanics course at a university. A quasi-experimental field study with two cohorts design was performed to measure the impact of such exercises on motivation, interest and conceptual understanding. The empirical results on learning achievement show a significant positive influence of the smartphone-based experimental exercise for the dynamics of rigid bodies topic with a medium effect size of d =0.42. For the analysis of rotational motion topic, a positive learning achievement for both groups was evidenced, but the effect size of the smartphone-based exercise was rather small at d =0.20 . The intrinsic and germane cognitive loads turned out to be similar at an intermediate level for both groups. However, the extrinsic cognitive load for the intervention group decreased significantly, which might be the reason why more complex experimental exercises foster conceptual understanding
