    Automatic Runtime Calculation of Communications for Data-Parallel Expressions with Periodic Conditions

    Producción CientíficaMany real-world applications feature data accesses on periodic domains. Manually implementing the synchronizations and communications associated to the data dependences on each case is cumbersome and error-prone. It is increasingly interesting to support these applications in high-level parallel programming languages or parallelizing compilers. In this paper, we present a technique that, for distributed-memory systems, calculates the specific communications derived from data-parallel codes with or without periodic boundary conditions on affine access expressions. It makes transparent to the programmer the management of aggregated communications for the chosen data partition. Our technique moves to runtime part of the compile-time analysis typically used to generate the communication code for affine expressions, introducing a complete new technique that also supports the periodic boundary conditions. We present an experimental study to evaluate our proposal using several study cases.     Thread-like tentacles in the Mediterranean corals Paramuricea clavata and Corallium rubrum

    The occurrence of modified tentacles (i.e. thread-like tentacles) in the Mediterranean octocorals Paramuricea clavata and Corallium rubrum is reported. Colonies of four species of Mediterranean gorgonians were maintained in aquarium conditions for more than 5 months. The development of thread-like tentacles has been observed only in two of the four species. The presence of modified tentacles in other cnidarians has been usually associated with defensive/aggressive behavior.     Nanocomposites based on low density polyethylene filled with carbon nanotubes prepared by high energy ball milling and their potential antibacterial activity

    Low density polyethylene (LDPE) based nanocomposites containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared by a two-step process consisting of a pre-mixture using high energy ball milling (HEBM) and subsequent hot pressing. The effects of ball milling and the presence of the MWCNTs on some physical properties of the materials and the antimicrobial efficiency against DH5α Escherichia coli were studied. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that the polymer structure did not change in the final materials after the addition of MWCNTs and mixing. Differential scanning calorimetry showed small differences in the LDPE thermal behavior as a function of the type of material due to small changes in the polymer crystallization. This result was mainly ascribed to the milling process rather than to the incorporation of the MWCNTs. The presence of 1% by weight of the nanofiller increased the rigidity and hydrophobicity of the nanocomposites with respect to neat LDPE. This effect was explained by the preferential location of the MWCNTs in the surface of the material as the main factor decreasing the polar contribution to the surface free energy. A correlation between hydrophobicity, biofilm development and the shape and size of DH5α E. coli was observed, indicating that the presence of MWCNTs leads to a biocide effect by decreasing cell adhesion and changing its metabolism

    Electromagnetic and Weak Moments of the Tau-Lepton

    The electromagnetic and weak dipole moments of the Tau-lepton have been measured by experiments at e+e- colliders. Data samples of e+e- --> tau+tau-, e+e- --> tau+tau- gamma and e+e- --> e+e-tau+tau- events collected at centre-of-mass energies between 10 and 200 GeV are used.     La comunicación presentada se trata de una experiencia desarrollada en la República Dominicana con el objetivo de mejorar la producción y la comercialización de productos agroalimentarios de cuatro Juntas de Regantes del país. A través de los Centros de Agronegocios creados por el Instituto de Recursos Hidráulicos (INDRHI) de la República Dominicana se pretende fortalecer las actividades conjuntas en el cultivo y la puesta en el mercado de los regantes. En este sentido el Instituto de Recursos Hidráulicos contactó con técnicos de universidades españolas con el objeto de llevar a cabo una serie de actuaciones para la mejora de la rentabilidad de las explotaciones agrarias y se establecieron las líneas de ayuda y cooperación entre la institución y las universidades españolas implicadas en el proyecto

    Sublittoral soft bottom communities and diversity of Mejillones Bay in northern Chile (Humboldt Current upwelling system)

    The macrozoobenthos of Mejillones Bay (23°S; Humboldt Current) was quantitatively investigated over a 7-year period from austral summer 1995/1996 to winter 2002. About 78 van Veen grab samples taken at six stations (5, 10, 20 m depth) provided the basis for the analysis of the distribution of 60 species and 28 families of benthic invertebrates, as well as of their abundance and biomass. Mean abundance (2,119 individuals m-2) was in the same order compared to a previous investigation; mean biomass (966 g formalin wet mass m-2), however, exceeded prior estimations mainly due to the dominance of the bivalve Aulacomya ater. About 43% of the taxa inhabited the complete depth range. Mean taxonomic Shannon diversity (H', Log e) was 1.54 ± 0.58 with a maximum at 20 m (1.95 ± 0.33); evenness increased with depth. The fauna was numerically dominated by carnivorous gastropods, polychaetes and crustaceans (48%). About 15% of the species were suspensivorous, 13% sedimentivorous, 11% detritivorous, 7% omnivorous and 6% herbivorous. Cluster analyses showed a significant difference between the shallow and the deeper stations. Gammarid amphipods and the polychaete family Nephtyidae characterized the 5-mzone, the molluscs Aulacomya ater, Mitrella unifasciata and gammarids the intermediate zone, while the gastropod Nassarius gayi and the polychaete family Nereidae were most prominent at the deeper stations. The communities of the three depth zones did not appear to be limited by hypoxia during non-El Niño conditions. Therefore, no typical change in community structure occurred during El Niño 1997–1998, in contrast to what was observed for deeper faunal assemblages and hypoxic bays elsewhere in the coastal Humboldt Current system

    Nonaggressive systemic mastocytosis (SM) without skin lesions associated with insect-induced anaphylaxis shows unique features versus other indolent SM

    Spanish Network on Mastocytosis (REMA): et al.[Background]: Indolent systemic mastocytosis (ISM) without skin lesions (ISMs-) shows a higher prevalence in males, lower serum baseline tryptase levels, and KIT mutation more frequently restricted to bone marrow (BM) mast cells (MCs) than ISM with skin lesions (ISMs+). Interestingly, in almost one-half of ISMs- patients, MC-mediator release episodes are triggered exclusively by insects. [Objective]: We aimed to determine the clinical and laboratory features of ISMs- associated with insect-induced anaphylaxis (insectISMs-) versus other patients with ISM. [Methods]: A total of 335 patients presenting with MC activation syndrome, including 143 insectISMs-, 72 ISMs- triggered by other factors (otherISMs-), 56 ISMs+, and 64 nonclonal MC activation syndrome, were studied. [Results]: Compared with otherISMs- and ISMs+ patients, insectISMs- cases showed marked male predominance (78% vs 53% and 46%; P <.001), a distinct pattern of MC-related symptoms, and significantly lower median serum baseline tryptase levels (22.4 vs 28.7 and 45.8 μg/L; P ≤.009). Moreover, insectISMs- less frequently presented BM MC aggregates (46% vs 70% and 81%; P ≤.001), and they systematically showed MC-restricted KIT mutation.
