Territory promotion through films — how world cinema succeeds in generating a common perception of cities

The following article takes a closer look at how filmmakers can use the potential of film in order to promote a city or even an entire region. With special regards to the role of the term “simulation” (which was first introduced by French philosopher Jean Baudrillard), it examines the effectiveness of cinema products in resonance with their target groups, trying to demonstrate inasmuch a positive image of the city or its administration influences its perception amongst moviegoers. The article aims primarily at the following objectives: - to show the inherent characteristics of cinema simulacrum which has the power to crucially increase the attractiveness of a city or region; - to define the influence of various aspects of the simulacrum which are necessary in order to shape a positive perception in the eyes of different target groups. In this respect the authors will refer to a bigger number of concrete examples of movies that have successfully changed (or altered) the reputation of a city or region. By using the method of comparing analysis the authors have come to the conclusion, that “simulation” – exemplarily used in films – plays a major role in effectively promoting a city or region. For some regions – and for some audiences – the technique of “simulation” can in fact be deemed the decisive factor. Especially in most recent, contemporary cases linked to virtual target groups, the concept has proven to be very successful – as with cities or regions that, prior to their appearance in a motion picture, have had only a very vague image, if not to say: no image at all

Migration in the mirror of mass-media: moder tools and trends of opinion on migration processes in Russia formation

The article substantiates the necessity of the government, media and NGOs migration concerning communication policy improving. The author argues that public attitudes to migration processes and migrants in Russia in recent years shifted from negative to neutral. However at the moment it is unstable due to the escalation of terrorist violence and the deteriorating migration situation in Europe. Оn the basis of the results of the content analysis of different media, the author comes to the conclusion that in order to harmonize the inter-ethnic relations in Russia a comprehensive information and communication strategy is required. Currently it’s not formed yet.

This thesis discusses how an estimation of an engine’s condition and maximum load can be calculated from online engine parameter measurements. The calculated engine index is usable when loading engines, as it enables engines to be loaded more efficiently based on the actual load capacity. This increases the engines’ total power output, as load reductions may be avoided. The purpose of the thesis is to identify the most critical engine parameters needed to produce a usable index and to develop and test this index. Additionally, the situations and usability areas where the index is beneficial shall be presented. The thesis proposes that two indexes shall be calculated by using measurements from the exhaust gas temperatures, cylinder pressure and turbocharger speed. The indexes express the engine’s load capacity differently and are assumed to provide various benefits in situations such as engine diagnostics and control.I detta arbete kartläggs möjligheterna att räkna ut ett estimat av en motors kondition och maximala last utgående från motorns mätvärden.

Protease inhibitor (Pi) locus, fertility and twinning

In a sample of 160 Dutch twin pairs and their parents, we found that mothers of dizygotic twins had frequencies of the S and Z alleles at the protease inhibitor (Pi) locus that were 3 times higher than a control sample. Mothers of identical twins also had a higher frequency of S than controls. The S allele may thus both increase ovulation rate and enhance the success of multiple pregnancies. There was also an increased frequency of the S allele in fathers of dizygotic twins; however, this may be a secondary effect of assortative mating for family size (indicating by the number of siblings of the parents), for which a correlation of 0.2 was observed. Parents of dizygotic twins came from larger families than parents of monozygotic twins, but no effect of Pi type on family size was seen. © 1992 Springer-Verlag

Construction of 3D geological models in glacial deposits to characterise migration of pollution

    Get PDF
The National geological database at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) is based on an extensive well database Jupiter, a geophysical database Gerda (Tulstrup 2003) and a recently established database for various types of geological models. These databases are integrated in a GIS system. The integration of this data enables new possibilities of constructing improved geological models. GIS systems offer a powerful tool for the geologist not only in combining multiple data, but also in visualising the model and hence presenting the final product in a simple and understandable way. 3D geological models will become increasingly important for the execution of improved cost-benefit analysis and risk assessment of contaminated sites, as well as strategic evaluation of groundwater and raw material resources in general. The possibility of storing such models on a public platform will be a major advance for future users of geological databases. The primary goal of this paper is to demonstrate the potential of an integrated GIS system, with an example of how traditional geological information may be combined in new ways in order to improve the correlation of well data in multiple directions. The application is demonstrated for a highly contaminated industrial site in the town of Ringe, Denmark (Fig. 1)

A 3D stereo camera system for precisely positioning animals in space and time

PLT was supported by the Scottish Funding Council (grant HR09011) through the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland. Here, we describe a portable stereo camera system that integrates a GPS receiver, an attitude sensor and 3D stereo photogrammetry to rapidly estimate the position of multiple animals in space and time. We demonstrate the performance of the system during a field test by simultaneously tracking the individual positions of six long-finned pilot whales, Globicephala melas. In shore-based accuracy trials, a system with a 50-cm stereo baseline had an average range estimation error of 0.09 m at a 5-m distance increasing up to 3.2 at 50 m. The system is especially useful in field situations where it is necessary to follow groups of animals travelling over relatively long distances and time periods whilst obtaining individual positions with high spatial and temporal resolution (up to 8 Hz). These positions provide quantitative estimates of a variety of key parameters and indicators for behavioural studies such as inter-animal distances, group dispersion, speed and heading. This system can additionally be integrated with other techniques such as archival tags, photo-identification methods or acoustic playback experiments to facilitate fieldwork investigating topics ranging from natural social behaviour to how animals respond to anthropogenic disturbance. By grounding observations in quantitative metrics, the system can characterize fine-scale behaviour or detect changes as a result of disturbance that might otherwise be difficult to observe.PostprintPeer reviewe
