    Scheduling with Fuzzy Methods

Nowadays, manufacturing industries -- driven by fierce competition and rising customer requirements -- are forced to produce a broader range of individual products of rising quality at the same (or preferably lower) cost. Meeting these demands implies an even more complex production process and thus also an appropriately increasing request to its scheduling. Aggravatingly, vagueness of scheduling parameters -- such as times and conditions -- are often inherent in the production process. In addition, the search for an optimal schedule normally leads to very difficult problems (NP-hard problems in the complexity theoretical sense), which cannot be solved effciently. With the intent to minimize these problems, the introduced heuristic method combines standard scheduling methods with fuzzy methods to get a nearly optimal schedule within an appropriate time considering vagueness adequately

Solar sailing - mission opportunities and innovative technology demonstration

    Get PDF
Solar sailing is a unique and elegant form of propulsion that transcends reliance on reaction mass. Rather than carrying propellant, solar sails acquire momentum from photons, the quantum packets of energy from which sunlight is composed. In addition, since solar sails are not limited by reaction mass, they can provide continual acceleration, limited only by the lifetime of the sail film in the space environment. Therefore, solar sails can expand the envelope of possible missions, enabling new high-energy mission concepts that are essentially impossible with conventional reaction propulsion, and enhancing current mission concepts by lowering launch mass and reducing trip times

Northern Saw-whet Owl Summary and Comparisons of Camp Hydaway and Surrounding Virginia Coastal Plains and Mountain Regions

    Get PDF
Migrating Northern Saw-whet Owls were captured and banded at a site in the Virginia Piedmont in the fall of 2005, and the results were compared with the results of banding from the previous three years. The results were also compared to similar efforts to monitor migration that were made on the coastal plains and the mountain regions of Virginia in these same years. Migration volume was higher in the mountains compared to the piedmont and coast, and the mountains experienced the earliest migration peak, followed by the piedmont, and then the coastal plain. There was not a significant difference between adult and immature Northern Saw-whet Owls in their migration timing. Adults made up the bulk of migrating owls in the mountains and on the piedmont, which is consistent with these years being non-invasion years. The coastal site, however, had a nearly even ratio of adults to immatures, which may reflect a geographic variation in migratory route in these two age classes

THE PLACE OF COMMUNITY FOOD FORESTS: A REVIEW AND CASE STUDY OF COMMUNITY FOOD FORESTS AND THEIR UNTAPPED POTENTIAL

As population grows, the borders of urban and peri-urban areas continue to expand. The UN projects that by 2050 more than 68% of the world population is expected to live in urban areas (UN, 2018). Presently, urban centers are heterotrophic, or highly consumptive of products produced elsewhere, making them one of the most pressing challenges to global sustainability (Wu, 2008). With an ever-increasing imperative for more sustainable food production, multi-use edible green landscapes and other autotrophic, or self-feeding urban agriculture initiatives, are gaining attention and creative practice to incorporate a diversity of ecosystem services (ES). Community food forests (CFF) are novel pieces of this emergent place-based food system (PbFS). To validate the call to incorporate CFF within a PbFS, I establish a framework for analyzing the tangible and intangible ES of these systems as an alternative to the industrial model by working towards goals of sustainability, equity, food citizenship, and place-building. I continue this framework by introducing the ES typology to understand the multifaceted benefits available from a landscape. In chapter two I present a scoping review of CFF in literature and practice. I apply the PbFS and ES typologies to expose the limitations of our scholarly inclusion of CFF as pieces of a larger system. This review exposes the gap that exists between our academic approach with the purpose and intentions of CFF currently in practice. To answer the call proposed in chapter two for a scholarly investigation of the perceived and actual value of CFF to a community of users, I apply a place-based ecosystem assessment to 6th Ward Garden Park, a CFF in Helena, MT. This case study highlights the importance of CFF to meet cultural services needs within a community while working towards the larger goals of PbFS. The case study identifies CFF as systems of stacked ES benefits while identifying specific ES that serve as doorways for deeper use and community benefit. Looking forward, this case study provides a working model for assessing user perceptions and values of CFF as a way to assess their role in addressing the wider vision PbFS

    Neil and the Nun

This thesis illustrates the production of the narrative short film Neil and the Nun. The various chapters included in this written work delineate the development, preproduction, production, and post-productions stages of this thesis film. In supplement to these four larger chapters, the script, shot list, budget, and script breakdown are included. Neil and the Nun, written, directed, produced, and edited by me, articulates life through the perceptions of a child. The story centers on the volatile relationship of two fourth graders and their teacher, a possibly closeted lesbian nun. Because they are children, they have different notions than adults of priority, relevance, and the meaning of life\u27s events. The intention of this film is to authentically delve into this child worldview, revealing their shift towards wisdom and compassion. The film took twelve shooting days and involved five primary locations. My larger goal was to create a film that exemplifies my capacity as a filmmaker, thus, steering me towards the next step of my career
