Higgs sector CP violation in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model

We study the possibility that CP is spontaneously broken in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model when radiative corrections to the Higgs potential are included. We show that this can only occur if a light Higgs boson exists. Considering the recent ALEPH Higgs search, we exclude most of the parameter space of the model. The possibility of explicit CP violation in the model is also briefly discussed.Comment: 8 pgs, SCIPP-92/1

Energy Loss Signals in the ALICE TRD

We present the energy loss measurements with the ALICE TRD in the βγ\beta\gamma range 1--104^{4}, where β=v/c\beta=v/c and γ=1/1β2\gamma=1/\sqrt{1-\beta^2}. The measurements are conducted in three different scenarios: 1) with pions and electrons from testbeams; 2) with protons, pions and electrons in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energy 7 TeV; 3) with muons detected in ALICE cosmic runs. In the testbeam and cosmic ray measurements, ionization energy loss (dE/dx) signal as well as ionization energy loss plus transition radiation (dE/dx+TR) signal are measured. With cosmic muons the onset of TR is observed. Signals from TeV cosmic muons are consistent with those from GeV electrons in the other measurements. Numerical descriptions of the signal spectra and the βγ\beta\gamma-dependence of the most probable signals are also presented.Comment: Proceedings for the 4th Workshop on Advanced Transition Radiation Detectors for Accelerator and Space Applications, 14-16 September 2011, Bari, Ital

Clinical care and complicity with torture

    Get PDF
The UN Convention against Torture defines torture as “any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person” by someone acting in an official capacity for purposes such as obtaining a confession or punishing or intimidating that person.1 It is unethical for healthcare professionals to participate in torture, including any use of medical knowledge or skill to facilitate torture or allow it to continue, or to be present during torture.2-7 Yet medical participation in torture has taken place throughout the world and was a prominent feature of the US interrogation practice in military and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) detention facilities in the years after the attacks of 11 September 2001.8-11 Little attention has been paid, however, to how a regime of torture affects the ability of health professionals to meet their obligations regarding routine clinical care for detainees. The 2016 release of previously classified portions of guideline from the CIA regarding medical practice in its secret detention facilities sheds light on that question. These show that the CIA instructed healthcare professions to subordinate their fundamental ethical obligations regarding professional standards of care to further the objectives of the torturers

Measurement of the photon structure function at ALEPH

    Get PDF
The photon structure function F2gamma has been measured with data taken by the ALEPH collaboration at LEP centre-of-mass energies sqrt s = 91 GeV with < Q^2 > of 9.9, 20.7 and 284 GeV^2 and sqrt s = 183 GeV with of 13.7 and 56.5 GeV^2. For the data at sqrt s = 183 GeV a two-dimensional unfolding method employing the principle of maximum entropy is used, which reduces the errors compared to one-dimensional methods.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, To be published in proceedings "PHOTON99

Heavy Quarks and Leptons at e+ee^+e^- Colliders

    Get PDF
The production of massive quarks and leptons in e+ee^+e^- collisions is studied using exact helicity amplitudes. Total cross sections as a function of ycuty_{\rm cut}, in both the JADE and the kTk_T algorithms, are presented and compared with massless results. Some invariant mass distributions are examined in relation to Higgs detection. Compact expressions for the helicity amplitudes are given.Comment: 32 Pages (20 Figs available from the authors in Postscript or via Fax ), Plain Tex, DFTT 53/9

    Four-fermion decay of Higgs bosons

    Get PDF
We calculate four-fermion decays of a Higgs boson via WWWW and/or ZZZZ intermediate states for Higgs masses below mWm_W. We examine models with a doubly-charged Higgs boson H++H^{++} and show that the four-fermion decay is the dominant mode for a wide range of parameter space. Existing searches for H++H^{++} in ZZ decays have not looked for this mode. We also derive four-fermion decay rate for a neutral Higgs boson.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, uses an obsolete version of phyzzx with modification (included in the file). Missing preprint no. adde

Discrepancy Principle and Stable Parameter Estimation in Avian Influenza

    Get PDF
In the case of a linear ill-posed problem with noisy data, a version of an a posteriori parameter selection discrepancy principle (DP) is justified for an arbitrary regularization strategy under very general assumptions on the operator and the stabilizer. Its efficiency is demonstrated for a practically important inverse problem in avian influenza. We refer to our result as an abstract discrepancy principle (ADP), which shows that applicability of the DP largely depends on the level of noise in the data rather than the method used for the construction of a specific regularization procedure

Financial Development and the Liquidity of Cross-Listed Stocks; The Case of ADR\u27s

    Get PDF
This study examines the relationship between financial development in a particular country and the volatility and illiquidity of ADR’s cross-listed on American exchanges, that correspond to the particular home country. Tests show that financial development and illiquidity are inversely related, thus, financial development improves liquidity and reduces volatility. The results have important implications for individual investors, firms seeking to lower their cost of capital, and the economic well-being of countries in general
