    The Normalisation of Enterprising Education

    The advancing and entrenching of many forms of entrepreneurship and enterprising education, within higher education institutions, is instrumental in the development of entrepreneurship, industry, and the regeneration of society as a whole. However, this development is subject to the resources, capability, and ongoing support available. Inspired by a recent visit to the United States of America by a group of academics, this paper compares two distinct cases of this offering as witnessed through reflective investigation. The findings documented within this paper highlight the issues of programme and institutional focus, the resource effectiveness of different universities, and the levels of educational experiences across continents. In further strengthening this form of education, this paper uniquely presents phases of normalisation for enterprising education, which attempts to address issues of educational environment, approach, rhetoric, and engagement

    Creating change in government to address the social determinants of health: how can efforts be improved?

    Background: The evidence base for the impact of social determinants of health has been strengthened considerably in the last decade. Increasingly, the public health field is using this as a foundation for arguments and actions to change government policies. The Health in All Policies (HiAP) approach, alongside recommendations from the 2010 Marmot Review into health inequalities in the UK (which we refer to as the ‘Fairness Agenda’), go beyond advocating for the redesign of individual policies, to shaping the government structures and processes that facilitate the implementation of these policies. In doing so, public health is drawing on recent trends in public policy towards ‘joined up government’, where greater integration is sought between government departments, agencies and actors outside of government. Methods: In this paper we provide a meta-synthesis of the empirical public policy research into joined up government, drawing out characteristics associated with successful joined up initiatives. We use this thematic synthesis as a basis for comparing and contrasting emerging public health interventions concerned with joined-up action across government. Results: We find that HiAP and the Fairness Agenda exhibit some of the characteristics associated with successful joined up initiatives, however they also utilise ‘change instruments’ that have been found to be ineffective. Moreover, we find that – like many joined up initiatives – there is room for improvement in the alignment between the goals of the interventions and their design. Conclusion: Drawing on public policy studies, we recommend a number of strategies to increase the efficacy of current interventions. More broadly, we argue that up-stream interventions need to be ‘fit-for-purpose’, and cannot be easily replicated from one context to the next

    A point-wise approach to the analysis of complex composite structures using digital image correlation and thermoelastic stress analysis

    Thermoelastic Stress Analysis (TSA) and Digital Image Correlation (DIC) are used to examine the stress and strain distributions around the geometric discontinuity in a composite double butt strap joint (DBSJ). A well-known major limitation in conducting analysis using TSA is that it provides a metric that is only related to the sum of the principal stresses and cannot provide the component stresses/strains. The stress metric is related to the thermoelastic response by a combination of material properties known as the thermoelastic constant (coefficient of thermal expansion divided by density and specific heat). The thermoelastic constant is usually obtained by a calibration process. For calibration purposes when using orthotropic materials it is necessary to obtain the thermoelastic constant in the principal material directions, as the principal stress directions for a general structure are unknown. Often it is assumed that the principal stress directions are coincident with the principal material directions. Clearly, this assumption is not valid in complex stress systems and therefore a means of obtaining the thermoelastic constants in the principal stress directions is required. Such a region is that in the neighbourhood of the discontinuities in a bonded lap joint. A methodology is presented which employs a point wise manipulation of the thermoelastic constants from the material directions to the principal stress directions using full field DIC strain data obtained from the neighbourhood of the discontinuity. A comparison of stress metrics generated from the TSA and DIC data is conducted to provide an independent experimental validation of the 2D DIC analysis. The accuracy of a 2D plane strain finite element model representing the joint is assessed against the two experimental data sets. Excellent agreement is found between the experimental and numerical results apart from in the adhesive layer; the adhesive is the only component of the joint where the material properties were not obtained experimentally.
