This study assessed the integration of community services and research through the livelihood needs assessment of a countryside in the Philippines particularly Sitio Malanas, Lettac Sur, Santol, La Union as basis of the actions in addressing the needs.  Specifically, the livelihood situation and needs were determined and proposed actions for the improvement of the livelihood situation of the community.  Thirty five members of the community participated in the research.  A focused group discussion was utilized in gathering the data.  The residents of the community were found to be engaged in farming, sold agricultural products, and had only three variety stores getting its supplies from other places. They encountered livelihood problems mostly related to marketing and transportation.  They wanted additional livelihood program, to improve sales, and be provided with seminar-workshops on business-related activities.  The findings show that there is a need for a program to improve their livelihood needs.  It is recommended that actions have to be taken for the improvement of the livelihood situation of the community in cooperation with the local government unit and the school extending relevant community services based on research. Fair Coexistence of Scheduled and Random Access Wireless Networks: Unlicensed LTE/WiFi

    Get PDF
We study the fair coexistence of scheduled and random access transmitters sharing the same frequency channel. Interest in coexistence is topical due to the need for emerging unlicensed LTE technologies to coexist fairly with WiFi. However, this interest is not confined to LTE/WiFi as coexistence is likely to become increasingly commonplace in IoT networks and beyond 5G. In this article we show that mixing scheduled and random access incurs and inherent throughput/delay cost, the cost of heterogeneity. We derive the joint proportional fair rate allocation, which casts useful light on current LTE/WiFi discussions. We present experimental results on inter-technology detection and consider the impact of imperfect carrier sensing.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, journa

Analysis of a public repository for the study of automatic fall detection algorithms

    Get PDF
The use of publicly available repositories containing movement traces of real or experimental subjects is a key aspect to define an evaluation framework that allows a systematic assessment of wearable fall detection systems. This papers presents a detailed analysis of a public dataset of traces which employed five sensing points to characterize the user’s mobility during the execution of ADLs (Activities of Daily Living) and emulated falls. The analysis is aimed at analysing two main factors: the importance of the election of the position of the sensor and the possible impact of the user’s personal features on the statistical characterization of the movements. Results reveal the importance of the nature of the ADL for the effectiveness of the discrimination of the falls.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

Root Infinitives in Child L2 Spanish

    Get PDF
This thesis aims to develop an understanding of the Root Infinitive (RI) phenomenon in child L2 Spanish. Previous research has investigated this phenomenon in Spanish first language acquisition and in adult L2 Spanish, but much less attention has been given to this phenomenon in children learning Spanish as a second language. This thesis focuses on whether children learning Spanish as a second language go through a RI stage. It also examines which morphological forms and types of predicates appear in the RI stage of these children. The data for this study were collected via natural production in oral and written form, using a wordless book by Mercer Mayer: A BOY, A DOG and A FROG. There were 30 child subjects, all native speakers of English, who received Spanish immersion instruction at the Missoula International School in Missoula, Montana. As hypothesized, the results of this study suggest that children learning Spanish as a second language go through a RI stage. The RI stage for child L2 Spanish was found to be closely related to the RI stage in LI Spanish. The RI forms in child L2 Spanish appear mainly as bare stems and overgeneralizations. Few morphological infinitives exist in the production of these children. The quantitative results show that the RIs forms manifest primarily with event-denoting predicates. The presence of the RI stage in child L2 Spanish raises fundamental questions about the acquisition of verbal morphology. One question is whether the RI stage can be described as a natural development attributed to cognitive processes, transfer from LI English or the type of instruction. The results of this study suggest three stages in the acquisition of verbal morphology in child L2 Spanish
