Plutarch gives Plato's philosophy of love a new direction by applying its basic ideas to marital love and by defending the significance of sexuality for personality development and human bonding. This work is presented here with a literary-oriented introduction, the Greek text has been checked carefully, the German translation aims to be readable and is supplemented by detailed notes. Four essays by various authors are included

Emotional intentionality and the attitude-content distinction

    Get PDF
Typical emotions share important features with paradigmatic intentional states, and therefore might admit of distinctions made in theory of intentionality. One such distinction is between attitude and content, where we can specify the content of an intentional state separately from its attitude, and therefore the same content can be taken up by different intentional attitudes. According to some philosophers, emotions do not admit of this distinction, although there has been no sustained argument for this claim. In this article, I argue that the way values figure in emotional experience qualifies the content of emotional experience such that the attitude-content distinction cannot be applied

AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of pars plana vitrectomy(PPV)combined with inverted internal limiting membrane(ILM)flap technique for macular hole retinal detachment(MHRD)of high myopia. METHODS: This was a retrospective case series. Totally 27 patients(27 eyes)who were diagnosised with MHRD of high myopia and underwent vitrectomy combined with inverted ILM flap covering technique were eIlrolled in this study. The diopter was ≥-6.00D and axial length was ≥26mm. The mean age was 53.69±7.23 years. And there 9 males and 18 females. The logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution(LogMAR)best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA)was 1.41±0.28. All patients were performed PPV with inverted ILM flap, resected the vitreous gel and cortex completely. Bright blue G stained the ILM around the fovea. The ILM was peeled off around the MH, and some portion of the ILM flap was left attached to the edge of the MH. Covering the MH with the ILM flap. Then, C3F8 gas or silicone oil was injected into the vitreous cavity. The mean follow-up was more than 6mo and BCVA, MH closure, retinal reattachment, complications were retrospectively observed. RESULTS: After surgery, visual acuity improved in 21 eyes(78%), unchanged in 4 eyes(15%), decreased in 2 eyes(7%). The mean LogMAR BCVA was 0.84±0.40, the difference was significant(t=7.32, PCONCLUSION: PPV combined with inverted internal limiting membrane flap is an effective and safe management for the MHRD of high myopia

Risk factors for poor health and performance in European broiler production systems

Background Conventional broilers are currently one of the most efficient protein converters. Although decades of progress in genetic selection and feed formulation have lead to high standards of efficient broiler production, still a lot of variability is found between farms and between successive flocks. The aim of this study was to investigate risk- and/or protective factors for poor health and performance in conventional broiler-farms in Europe by developing eight multivariable linear mixed models. Three different models were used to investigate mortality (overall, first week, after first week), three models for performance variables (growth, feed conversion, European production index) and two models were related to slaughterhouse data (i.e. dead on arrival and condemnation rate). Results Several factors related to management and housing were significantly associated with health and performance of broilers. The following factors were associated with increased mortality: floor quality, neonatal septicemia, ventilation type and other professional activities of the farmer. The factors associated with performance were chick sex, coccidiosis infections, necrotic enteritis, dysbacteriosis, light intensity adaptations, ventilation type, comparing daily flock results with previous flock results by farmer, daily check of feed and water system and type of feed. For dead on arrival three risk factors were identified i.e. daily growth, type of light adaptation and type of drinkers system. For condemnation rate seven risk factors were found, i.e. type of drinking system, daily growth, feed withdrawal time, type of ventilation, house size, septicemia after seven days and type of feed. Conclusions These results imply that a multifactorial approach is required with adaptations involving both improvements in management, housing, health programs and an increasing level of professionalism of the farmer in order to improve broiler performance and health

BACKGROUND፡ The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence and to determine the associated factors of undiagnosed depression amongst hypertensive patients (HTNP) at primary health care centers (PHCC) in Gaza.METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted including 538 HTNP as a recruitment phase of a clustered randomized controlled trial. Data were collected through face-to-face structured interview, and depression status was assessed by Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI-II). Data were analyzed by STATA version 14 using standard complex survey analyses, accounted for unresponsiveness and clustering approach. Generalized linear regression analysis was performed to assess associations.RESULTS: The prevalence of undiagnosed clinical depression was 11.6% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 8.1, 16.3). Moreover, prevalence of 15.4% (95% CI: 10.8, 21.6) was found for mild depression symptoms. We found that non-adherence to antihypertensive medications (AHTNM) (β = 0.9, 95% CI: 0.17, 1.7), having more health-care system support (β = 2.8, 95% CI: 1.6, 3.9) and number of AHTNM (β = 1.5, 95% CI: 0.6, 2.5) remain significantly positively associated with BDI-II score. On the other hand, older age (β = -0.1, 95% CI: -0.2, -0.02), having better social support (β = -6.8, 95% CI: -8.9, -4.7) and having stronger patientdoctor relationship (β = -4.1, 95% CI: -6.9, -1.2) kept significantly negative association.CONCLUSION: The prevalence of undiagnosed depression was about one-quarter of all cases; half of them were moderate to severe. Routine screening of depression status should be a part of the care of HTNP in PHCC

Succession is a series sequential processes of the development of floristic community which involves changes in community structure, species composition and diversity over time. The information on tree stand floristic dynamics of various stages of succession in secondary forests in Malaysia is currently lacking. This study was conducted to determine tree stand structure, floristic composition, and species diversity in various stages of secondary forest development in the study areas. A total of 997, 1,842, and 834 tree stems with diameter at breast height (DBH) of > 5 cm were recorded in one-hectare-plots of 5, 10, and 20 year old secondary forests, respectively. The ten most common species in 5 and 10 year old of secondary forests consisted mostly of light demanding species. In the 20 year old secondary forest, these species did not exist. Macaranga gigantea was the most dominant tree species in the 5 and 10 year old secondary forests in terms of basal area and volume per hectare. The most common species, based on density, basal area, volume, and Importance Value Index (IVi), in the 20 year old secondary forest was Adinandra dumosa. The diversity and richness indices of the 10 year old secondary forest were the highest among all study sites. © 2018, Society for Indonesian Biodiversity. All rights reserved
