SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY NEW ENGLAND AND NEW FRANCE IN COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE: NOTRE DAME DES ANGES---A CASE STUDY

This work is a comparison of New England and New France in northeast North America in the seventeenth century. The study of New England relies on secondary works while the study of New France uses primary material. The seigneurie of Notre Dame des Anges, located north of Quebec City, was used as the basis of this study. The questions asked in this study are: Was culture or the environment the most significant factor in the establishing of colonies in the New World? Who were the people who came from England and France? What was the character of those who stayed on the land? What was the relationship between the fathers and sons? Implied in this study is why New England succeeded and why New France failed? The European powers came first to exploit the continent. Instead, the North American environment shaped and transformed those fragments of European cultures that crossed the Atlantic. In addition, the composition of those who came from both countries was similar. Many who came and stayed were mature adults, often artisans, from the urban centers of Europe. Those who persisted in New England/Andover and New France/Notre Dame des Agnes were similar in character. They married at about the same age and had about the same number of children. In both colonies fathers attempted to establish their sons on the land. Eventual land shortages in both colonies forced migration. Fathers in both colonies, however, when they could not provide land for their children within the community attempted to still provide for their children by giving them a trade, education, money, or land in another community. Thus, while the cultures that were transmitted to northeast North America varied these cultures were molded by the environment and took on a North American character which had similar qualities in each colony

Towards learner-centric pedagogies: Technology-enhanced teaching and learning in the 21st century classroom

Effective professional development contributes to improved teacher knowledge and practice as well as deep, meaningful student learning. Despite professional development being cited by the South African Department of Basic Education as a priority goal, teacher professional development activities have been inadequate. In lieu of the teacher knowledge and practice gaps, this paper used a socio-cultural lens to investigate the pedagogical affordances of digitalisation and technology integration. This study is part of a larger mixed method study but focuses solely on the qualitative results. This was done in an effort to understand teachers’ best practices with digital technologies and how they are being used in transformative ways in the classroom to inform the 21st century classroom and encourage a learner-centric environment. The findings reveal the weaknesses of the professional development activities on digital pedagogies and learner-centric pedagogies, which are generally episodic, one-size-fits-all events largely focused on technical knowledge. The chief impediment towards learner-centric pedagogies and the implementation of technology-enhanced teaching and learning is the misalignment between teachers’ digital abilities and the demands of the 21st century technology equipped classrooms. Our recommendation is the continuous situated professional development of teachers, including the creation of professional learning communities and harnessing digital technologies to provide an effective, hybrid approach to teacher learning and instructional delivery in the 21st century

The aim of this research is to find out what kind of guest loyalty programme Apollo Hotels and Resorts should implement for their individual leisure guests in order to gain more loyal leisure guests. In the literature review of this research, the following aspects are discussed: a loyalty programme and its use; the sort of loyalty programmes; the effects of a loyalty programme; and the wishes and needs of a leisure guest. Surveys were divided among 46 leisure guests of Apollo Hotels and Resorts in order to collect data on consumer demand for a guest loyalty programme. The data shows that it is highly recommended for Apollo Hotels and Resorts to implement a leisure guest loyalty programme based on tiers, with the possibility to redeem the saved credits for discounts at Apollo Hotels and Resorts. Furthermore, the data shows it is important that members of the guest loyalty programme receive special services not available to non-members.Keywords: guest loyalty programme, leisure guests, loyalty programme based on tiers, discounts, personal servic

Title: What shall we play? -A study of the importance of genre spread in music education. The aim of this study is to examine music teachers' and music students' reflections on the importance of genre spread in music education. The study covers music education in municipal primary schools and municipal music schools/schools of arts and music. I have used both quantitative and qualitative methods in my study. The quantitative method was in the form of questionnaires and the qualitative method was in the form of interviews. The result shows that both music teachers and music students in this study think that it is important to have genre spread in music education for several reasons. One important reason is the teachers' commitment to genres that might cease to exist. The questionnaires show that the majority of music students at the Malmö Academy of Music believe that the lack of genres in municipal music schools/schools of arts and music have influenced their continued practice of music.
