Predicting the distributions of under-recorded Odonata using species distribution models
1. Absences in distributional data may result either from the true absence of a species or from a false absence due to lack of recording effort. I use general linear models (GLMs) and species distribution models (SDMs) to investigate this problem in North American Odonata and present a potential solution. 2. I use multi-model selection methods based on Akaike's information criterion to evaluate the ability of water-energy variables, human population density, and recording effort to explain patterns of odonate diversity in the USA and Canada using GLMs. Water-energy variables explain a large proportion of the variance in odonate diversity, but the residuals of these models are significantly related to recorder effort. 3. I then create SDMs for 176species that are found solely in the USA and Canada using model averaging of eight different methods. These give predictions of hypothetical true distributions of each of the 176species based on climate variables, which I compare with observed distributions to identify areas where potential under-recording may occur. 4. Under-recording appears to be highest in northern Canada, Alaska, and Quebec, as well as the interior of the USA. The proportion of predicted species that have been observed is related to recorder effort and population density. Maps for individual species have been made available online () to facilitate recording in the future. 5. This analysis has illustrated a problem with current odonate recording in the form of unbalanced recorder effort. However, the SDM approach also provides the solution, targeting recorder effort in such a way as to maximise returns from limited resources
(Anti)symmetric matter and superpotentials from IIB orientifolds
We study the IIB engineering of N=1 gauge theories with unitary gauge group
and matter in the adjoint and (anti)symmetric representations. We show that
such theories can be obtained as Z2 orientifolds of Calabi-Yau A2 fibrations,
and discuss the explicit T-duality transformation to an orientifolded
Hanany-Witten construction. The low energy dynamics is described by a geometric
transition of the orientifolded background. Unlike previously studied cases, we
show that the orientifold 5-`plane' survives the transition, thus bringing a
nontrivial contribution to the effective superpotential. We extract this
contribution by using matrix model results and compare with geometric data. A
Higgs branch of our models recovers the engineering of SO/Sp theories with
adjoint matter through an O5-`plane' T-dual to an O6-plane. We show that the
superpotential agrees with that produced by engineering through an O5-`plane'
dual to an O4-plane, even though the orientifold of this second construction is
replaced by fluxes after the transition.Comment: 40 page
A Review of the fossil record of turtles of the clade Baenidae
The fossil record of the turtle clade Baenidae ranges from the Early Cretaceous (Aptian—Albian) to the Eocene. The group is present throughout North America during the Early Cretaceous, but is restricted to the western portions of the continents in the Late Cretaceous and Paleogene. No credible remains of the clade have been reported outside of North America to date. Baenids were warmadapted freshwater aquatic turtles that supported high levels of diversity at times through niche partitioning, particularly by adapting to a broad range of dietary preferences ranging from omnivorous to molluscivorous. Current phylogenies place Baenidae near the split of crown-group Testudines. Within Baenidae three more inclusive, named clades are recognized: Baenodda, Palatobaeninae and Eubaeninae. A taxonomic review of the group concludes that of 49 named taxa, 30 are nomina valida, 12 are nomina invalida and 7 are nomina dubia
Leading Chiral Logarithms to the Hyperfine Splitting of the Hydrogen and Muonic Hydrogen
We study the hydrogen and muonic hydrogen within an effective field theory
framework. We perform the matching between heavy baryon effective theory
coupled to photons and leptons and the relevant effective field theory at
atomic scales. This matching can be performed in a perturbative expansion in
alpha, 1/m_p and the chiral counting. We then compute the O(m_{l_i}^3
alpha^5/m_p^2 x logarithms) contribution (including the leading chiral
logarithms) to the Hyperfine splitting and compare with experiment. They can
explain about 2/3 of the difference between experiment and the pure QED
prediction when setting the renormalization scale at the rho mass. We give an
estimate of the matching coefficient of the spin-dependent proton-lepton

A review of the fossil record of turtles of the clade Pan-Carettochelys
Turtles of the total clade Pan-Carettochelys have a relatively poor fossil record that extends from the Early Cretaceous. The clade is only found in Asia during the Cretaceous, but spreads to Europe and North America during the Eocene. Neogene finds are restricted to Europe, Africa and Australia, whereas the only surviving species, Carettochelys insculpta, lives in New Guinea and the Northern Territories of Australia. The ecology of fossil pan-carettochelyids appears similar to that of the extant C. insculpta, although more primitive representatives were likely less adapted to brackish water. Current phylogenies only recognize three internested clades: Pan- Carettochelys, Carettochelyidae and Carettochelyinae. A taxonomic review of the group concludes that of 25 named taxa, 13 are nomina valida, 7 are nomina invalida, 3 are nomina dubia, and 2 are nomina nuda
The power of invalidating communication: Receiving invalidating feedback predicts threat-related emotional, physiological, and social responses

Previous studies have found that communicating acceptance and understanding (validation) enhances the recipient's psychological and physiological wellbeing compared with receiving nonunderstanding feedback (invalidation). Yet, such studies have not established whether it is validation or absence of invalidation that is beneficial. This study examined the social, physiological, and emotional effects of validating and invalidating feedback in more detail, by employing a control group. Ninety healthy volunteers were randomly allocated to receive validating, invalidating, or no feedback during a series of stressor tasks. Self-report ratings, psychophysiological measurements and social engagement behaviors were recorded. While there were no significant differences between validated and control participants, invalidated participants showed increased physiological and psychological arousal on several measures and reduced social engagement behaviors compared with the other two groups. the relevance of these findings for understanding adverse effects of invalidation during clinical interactions is discussed
Stricture and perforation of the esophagus: Overlooked threats in the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
This study was undertaken to assess the frequency of significant esophageal involvement in the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES). In a consecutive series of 24 patients with this disease, 9 (37%) showed endoscopic evidence of acid-induced esophageal lesions ranging from erosive inflammation to ulceration with massive bleeding, severe stricture formation, and perforation. In 3 cases, pronounced esophagitis was known 1–5 years before the underlying disease was diagnosed. Severe esophageal complications developed despite treatment with antisecretory drugs. It is emphasized that the best way to limit such complications is by excision of the underlying gastrin-secreting tumor(s) when possible . Nous avons entrepris cette étude pour établir la fréquence de participation oesophagienne dans le syndrome de Zollinger-Ellison. Pour une série de 24 patients présentant cette maladie, 9 (37%) avaient à l'endoscopie des lésions oesophagiennes dues à l'acidité allant de l'érosion inflammatoire à l'ulcération avec saignement important, sténose sévère, et perforation. Dans 3 cas, une oesophagite importante était connue 1–5 ans avant que la maladie sous-jacente soit diagnostiquée. Des complications oesophagiennes sévères se sont produites malgré le traitement antisécrétoire. Nous insistons sur le fait que le meilleur moyen de limiter ces complications est d'exciser chaque fois que possible la ou les tumeurs sous-jacentes sécrétant la gastrine. El presente estudio fue emprendido con el propósito de determinar la frecuencia de afección ácido péptica significativa del esófago en pacientes con síndrome de Zollinger-Ellison. En una serie de 24 pacientes consecutivos con esta enfermedad, 9 (37%) exhibieron evidencia endoscópica de lesiones esofágicas inducidas por ácido, las cuales variaron entre inflamación erosiva y ulceración con sangrado masivo, estrechez severa, y perforación. En 3 pacientes se conocía la existencia de esofagitis severa entre 1 y 5 años antes del diagnóstico de la enfermedad de base. Se desarrollaron graves complicaciones esofágicas a pesar del tratamiento con drogas antisecretorias en 3 pacientes. Binary White Dwarfs in the Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey
We report results of a systematic radial velocity survey for double degenerate (DD) binaries as potential progenitors of type Ia supernovae: SPY (ESO Supernovae Ia Progenitor surveY). More than 1000 white dwarfs (WDs) and pre-white dwarfs were observed with the VLT. The aim of SPY is to perform a statistically significant test of the DD scenario. We give an overview of the project and follow-up results. The sample is used for two tests of the contempo- rary picture of close binary evolution leading to DDs. It is shown that the SPY observations of low mass He-core WDs (HeWDs) are inconsistent with the idea that they all reside in close binary systems. We carry out a model atmosphere analysis of WDs residing in double-lined binaries and estimate individual cooling ages. For a number of systems the younger (and hotter) component is the less massive one, as expected. However, for some systems the mass ratio is inverted
New Results from the Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey
We report on a systematic radial velocity survey for double degenerate (DD) binaries as potential progenitors of type Ia supernovae: SPY (ESO Supernovae Ia Progenitor surveY). More than 1000 white dwarfs and pre-white dwarfs were observed with the VLT. Our aim is to perform a statistically significant test of the DD scenario. SPY detected more than 100 new binary white dwarfs, dramatically increasing the number of known DDs. System parameters are determined from ongoing follow-up observations. Our sample includes systems with masses close to the Chandrasekhar limit and a probable SN Ia progenitor candidate
