Iridoids from Vitex cymosa
A new iridoid, named tarumal, as well as the known iridoids viteoid II and agnuside were isolated from the leaves of Vitex cymosa and identified by spectroscopic methods. Agent-Based Modelling and Heuristic Approach for Solving Complex OEM Flow-Shop Productions under Customer Disruptions
The application of the agent-based simulation approach in the flow-shop production environment has recently gained popularity among researchers. The concept of agent and agent functions can help to automate a variety of difficult tasks and assist decision-making in flow-shop production. This is especially so in the large-scale Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM) industry, which is associated with many uncertainties. Among these are uncertainties in customer demand requirements that create disruptions that impact production planning and scheduling, hence, making it difficult to satisfy demand in due time, in the right order delivery sequence, and in the right item quantities. It is however important to devise means of adapting to these inevitable disruptive problems by accommodating them while minimising the impact on production performance and customer satisfaction. In this paper, an innovative embedded agent-based Production Disruption Inventory-Replenishment (PDIR) framework, which includes a novel adaptive heuristic algorithm and inventory replenishment strategy which is proposed to tackle the disruption problems. The capabilities and functionalities of agents are utilised to simulate the flow-shop production environment and aid learning and decision making. In practice, the proposed approach is implemented through a set of experiments conducted as a case study of an automobile parts facility for a real-life large-scale OEM. The results are presented in term of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), such as the number of late/unsatisfied orders, to determine the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The results reveal a minimum number of late/unsatisfied orders, when compared with other approaches
Towards FAIRification of sensitive and fragmented rare disease patient data: challenges and solutions in European reference network registries
Introduction: Rare disease patient data are typically sensitive, present in multiple registries controlled by different custodians, and non-interoperable. Making these data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) for humans and machines at source enables federated discovery and analysis across data custodians. This facilitates accurate diagnosis, optimal clinical management, and personalised treatments. In Europe, twenty-four European Reference Networks (ERNs) work on rare disease registries in different clinical domains. The process and the implementation choices for making data FAIR (‘FAIRification’) differ among ERN registries. For example, registries use different software systems and are subject to different legal regulations. To support the ERNs in making informed decisions and to harmonise FAIRification, the FAIRification steward team was established to work as liaisons between ERNs and researchers from the European Joint Programme on Rare Diseases. Results: The FAIRification steward team inventoried the FAIRification challenges of the ERN registries and proposed solutions collectively with involved stakeholders to address them. Ninety-eight FAIRification challenges from 24 ERNs’ registries were collected and categorised into “training” (31), “community” (9), “modelling” (12), “implementation” (26), and “legal” (20). After curating and aggregating highly similar challenges, 41 unique FAIRification challenges remained. The two categories with the most challenges were “training” (15) and “implementation” (9), followed by “community” (7), and then “modelling” (5) and “legal” (5). To address all challenges, eleven types of solutions were proposed. Among them, the provision of guidelines and the organisation of training activities resolved the “training” challenges, which ranged from less-technical “coffee-rounds” to technical workshops, from informal FAIR Games to formal hackathons. Obtaining implementation support from technical experts was the solution type for tackling the “implementation” challenges. Conclusion: This work shows that a dedicated team of FAIR data stewards is an asset for harmonising the various processes of making data FAIR in a large organisation with multiple stakeholders. Additionally, multi-levelled training activities are required to accommodate the diverse needs of the ERNs. Finally, the lessons learned from the experience of the FAIRification steward team described in this paper may help to increase FAIR awareness and provide insights into FAIRification challenges and solutions of rare disease registries
Quilombos do submédio São Francisco: definições e delimitações
Este artigo traz alguns resultados preliminares da pesquisa intitulada "Perfil fotoetnográfico das comunidades quilombolas da região do submédio São Francisco", que pretende realizar, em especial, um mapeamento dos quilombos rurais nos municípios de Juazeiro (BA) e Petrolina (PE). A princípio o texto discute os conceitos de quilombos empregados por historiadores e antropólogos, justificando o porque da adoção da terminologia “comunidades negras rurais quilombolas”, passando pela lei de demarcação de áreas quilombolas, bem como as estatísticas concernentes. O artigo traz ainda os resultados da primeira visita realizada a um quilombo da região do Vale do São Francisco, a comunidade Barrinha da Conceição, localizada no Município de Juazeiro

The effect of peripheral high-frequency electrical stimulation on the primary somatosensory cortex in pigs
This study implements the use of Danish Landrace pigs as subjects for the long-term potentiation (LTP)-like pain model. This is accomplished by analyzing changes in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) in response to electrical stimulation on the ulnar nerve after applying high-frequency electrical stimulation (HFS) on the ulnar nerve. In this study, eight Danish Landrace pigs were electrically stimulated, through the ulnar nerve, to record the cortically evoked response in S1 by a 16-channel microelectrode array (MEA). Six of these pigs were subjected to HFS (four consecutive, 15 mA, 100 Hz, 1000 µs pulse duration) 45 min after the start of the experiment. Two pigs were used as control subjects to compare the cortical response to peripheral electrical stimulation without applying HFS. Low-frequency components of the intracortical signals (0.3–300 Hz) were analyzed using event-related potential (ERP) analysis, where the minimum peak during the first 30–50 ms (N1 component) in each channel was detected. The change in N1 was compared over time across the intervention and control groups. Spectral analysis was used to demonstrate the effect of the intervention on the evoked cortical oscillations computed between 75 ms and 200 ms after stimulus. ERP analysis showed an immediate increase in N1 amplitude that became statistically significant 45 mins after HFS (p < 0.01) for the intervention group. The normalized change in power in frequency oscillations showed a similar trend. The results show that the LTP-like pain model can be effectively implemented in pigs using HFS since the cortical responses are comparable to those described in humans
Soft situational strategic planning (SSSP): a method and case study of its application in a Brazilian municipality
Municipal government planning is challenging in the extreme being characterised by ill-structured and messy problems, the complexity of which is compounded by often conflicting views and priorities of multiple stakeholders. In South America, Situational Strategic Planning (SSP) is a wide spread method of such planning. The purpose of this paper is to explore the use of a proposed multi-methodological approach, Soft Situational Strategic Planning (SSSP) in a South American municipal government. SSSP is a variant of SSP enhanced with elements of Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) and Strategic Choice Approach (SCA). Through an action research case study in a Brazilian municipality, we implemented SSSP through a strategic planning cycle. The findings suggest that SSSP complement the SSP process regarding the implementation and monitoring of strategy. The application also indicated that SSSP has the potential to make government planning processes more structured for policy makers

The Use of the Velocity Selective Recording Technique to Reveal the Excitation Properties of the Ulnar Nerve in Pigs
Decoding information from the peripheral nervous system via implantable neural interfaces remains a significant challenge, considerably limiting the advancement of neuromodulation and neuroprosthetic devices. The velocity selective recording (VSR) technique has been proposed to improve the classification of neural traffic by combining temporal and spatial information through a multi-electrode cuff (MEC). Therefore, this study investigates the feasibility of using the VSR technique to characterise fibre type based on the electrically evoked compound action potentials (eCAP) propagating along the ulnar nerve of pigs in vivo. A range of electrical stimulation parameters (amplitudes of 50 μA–10 mA and pulse durations of 100 μs, 500 μs, 1000 μs, and 5000 μs) was applied on a cutaneous and a motor branch of the ulnar nerve in nine Danish landrace pigs. Recordings were made with a 14 ring MEC and a delay-and-add algorithm was used to convert the eCAPs into the velocity domain. The results revealed two fibre populations propagating along the cutaneous branch of the ulnar nerve, with mean velocities of 55 m/s and 21 m/s, while only one dominant fibre population was found for the motor branch, with a mean velocity of 63 m/s. Because of its simplicity to provide information on the fibre selectivity and direction of propagation of nerve fibres, VSR can be implemented to advance the performance of the bidirectional control of neural prostheses and bioelectronic medicine applications
Development of high-gain gaseous photomultipliers for the visible spectral range
We summarize the development of visible-sensitive gaseous photomultipliers,
combining a semitransparent bi-alkali photocathode with a state-of-the-art
cascaded electron multiplier. The latter has high photoelectron collection
efficiency and a record ion blocking capability. We describe in details the
system and methods of photocathode production and characterization, their
coupling with the electron multiplier and the gaseous-photomultiplier operation
and characterization in a continuous mode. We present results on the properties
of laboratory-produced KCsSb, CsSb and NaKSb photocathodes and
report on their stability and QE in gas; KCsSb photocathodes yielded QE
values in Ar/CH(95/5) above 30% at wavelengths of 360-400 nm. The novel
gaseous photomultiplier yielded stable operation at gains of 10, in
continuous operation mode, in 700 Torr of this gas; its sensitivity to single
photons was demonstrated. Other properties are described. The successful
detection of visible light with this gas-photomultiplier pave ways towards
further development of large-area sealed imaging detectors, of flat geometry,
insensitive to magnetic fields, which might have significant impact on light
