A Moai in Michelangelo Marble
A moai of Michelangelo Carrara marble carved by Rapanui artist Bene Tuki stands in Venice. In early 2004, an agreement was signed between the Italian Marenostrum Foundation (whose President is Orlando Pandolfi) and the Rapa Nui Mana Henua Ote Ao Corporation (President, Edgard Hereveri) for a series of joint activities leading to cultural and artistic exchanges, development strategies, and education and training. I am my self Honorary President of the Rapa Nui Corporation and Director of the Scientific Council of Marenostrum.</p
This article highlights the new economic conditions and cultural
development in the current transition from the industrial society
toward the global Information society; also called knowledge-based society, society of the services and -with some nuances of difference-
network society or immaterial society. The societal change is
much more rapid than the one that was characterized in the past:
the steps from the agrarian to the industrial society.
Facing the rapidity and unpredictability of change, some countries
have shown a high adaptive potential and have acquired a dominant
world position. China has been being the most outstanding
example- while other countries have been left behind. This is
the case of most Latin-American countries.
The arricie shows with concrete examples the ten " keys for development
" that have demonstrated to be successfull within the new
context of the information society. With a pragmatic approach, five
tools have also been shown to have experienced a great power of efficiency
and relevance.
Six tables complete this analysis at a more advanced level of complexity,
sophistication and precision

Whence We Come, Whither We Go: Return and Renewal in Lineage for Large Orchestra
This paper presents a conceptual and musical analysis of my composition Lineage, an eleven-minute work for large orchestra, written in 2013 for the New World Symphony and the San Francisco Symphony. Lineage takes as its premise the imagining of faux-folkloric music from a fictitious, distant culture. It engages with the idea of my artistic and personal ancestry, and revolves around the concept of return through the reworking of my own material, the re-contextualization of and linkage to past music traditions, and the repetition and transformation of musical material. I discuss the meaning behind the music, the choice of source material, and my compositional process, including descriptions of how I use technology. I place my work in relation to other composers who have revisited material, including Pierre Boulez, Yan Maresz, and György Ligeti. I also compare Lineage to Phonotopographie, my 2012 work for chamber ensemble that is closely related. The theoretical analysis involves an in-depth explanation of formal concerns, compositional techniques such as polyphonic and resonant usages of stratification, harmonic and pitch material from traditional, microtonal, and spectral sources, and finally rhythm. I conclude with a brief discussion on sideshadowing and temporal openess, a literary concept developed by Gary Saul Morson. I propose that the use of digital audio workstations (DAWs) as a compositional tool may provide composers with a form of musical sideshadowing - a way of understanding the plurality of possibilities present, while contemplating the global formal design

On the collapse of a post-tensioned reinforced concrete truss bridge during the construction phases
On March 2018 a post-tensioned reinforced concrete (RC) truss bridge, built inside a North American university campus using the Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) method, collapsed during the construction phases, while the bars of a diagonal member were being re-tensioned. This process was not part of the scheduled construction phases, but it was decided by the designers after having observed several cracks in the structural nodes.
This paper aims to analyse the final design of the bridge useful to determine the hypothetical causes of the collapse. Several numerical analyses have been performed to reproduce the behaviour of the different structural elements during the construction phases. In particular, construction stage analyses have been carried out to obtain the internal actions acting on the structural elements and on the nodes during the different construction steps and in order to analyse in detail the critical phases where the occurrence of the collapse has been hypothesized. The collapse mechanism is identified in the shear failure of a node of the concrete truss during the re-tensioning of a diagonal element. In fact, the reapplication of the post-tension had increased the axial force of the diagonal and consequently the shear action on the node. Moreover, the results obtained have shown that the bridge has never been in safe conditions, mainly because the interface surface of the cold joints had not undergone any type of work and remained smooth
Beyond Total Cost of Management (TCM) to Systemic Value Management (SVM): Transformational Trends and a Research Manifesto for an Evolving Discipline
Total cost management (TCM) has developed as a systematic approach to managing resources, costs, profitability, and risks throughout the lifecycle of any enterprise, program, facility, project, product or service. However, a number of trends are today creating a new socio-technical scenario, characterized by increasing volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA), which is affecting the strategic scope and applicative dimensions of TCM. A logic of sustainability and multi-stakeholder value is increasingly required to account for the competing and multidimensional needs of customers, employees, partners, and large stakeholder ecosystems. This article presents a review of cross-disciplinary literature and the use of authors’ engagement and consolidated expertise in the field to drive a group model building process aimed to design a conceptual framework and a research manifesto for the evolving TCM discipline. The study provides a classification of nine major trends and evaluates the impact of those trends on a number of TCM dimensions. Next, a research agenda is showed, including nine trajectories for scholars and practitioners engaged to support the evolution of TCM towards a new idea of systemic value management (SVM). The study advances the current knowledge on value-based and sustainable approaches to management and offers to experts and practitioners a basis to implement innovative development projects in the field of TCM

Youth Voices: Rethinking the War on Drugs. A Catalyst Curriculum Guide
This curriculum guide aims at integrating the topic of drugs to K-12 classrooms from a Latin American and Caribbean social perspective. The guide provides information on what drugs are and do, but also on the socioeconomic implications between drugs and their use. In-class activities are provided to encourage high school students to think about these topics
