    Tensor-Based Methods for Blind Spatial Signature Estimation in Multidimensional Sensor Arrays

    The estimation of spatial signatures and spatial frequencies is crucial for several practical applications such as radar, sonar, and wireless communications. In this paper, we propose two generalized iterative estimation algorithms to the case in which a multidimensional (R-D) sensor array is used at the receiver. The first tensor-based algorithm is an R-D blind spatial signature estimator that operates in scenarios where the source’s covariance matrix is nondiagonal and unknown. The second tensor-based algorithm is formulated for the case in which the sources are uncorrelated and exploits the dual-symmetry of the covariance tensor. Additionally, a new tensor-based formulation is proposed for an L-shaped array configuration. Simulation results show that our proposed schemes outperform the state-of-the-art matrix-based and tensor-based techniques

    Evidence in Favor of an Alternative Glucocorticoid Synthesis Pathway During Acute Experimental Chagas Disease

    It is well-established that infectious stress activates the hypothalamus–pituitary–adrenal axis leading to the production of pituitary adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) and adrenal glucocorticoids (GCs). Usually, GC synthesis is mediated by protein kinase A (PKA) signaling pathway triggered by ACTH. We previously demonstrated that acute murine Chagas disease courses with a marked increase of GC, with some data suggesting that GC synthesis may be ACTH-dissociated in the late phase of this parasitic infection. Alternative pathways of GC synthesis have been reported in sepsis or mental diseases, in which interleukin (IL)-1β, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and/or cAMP-activated guanine nucleotide exchange factor 2 (EPAC2) are likely to play a role in this regard. Accordingly, we have searched for the existence of an ACTH-independent pathway in an experimental model of a major parasitic disease like Chagas disease, in addition to characterizing potential alternative pathways of GC synthesis. To this end, C57BL/6 male mice were infected with T. cruzi (Tc), and evaluated throughout the acute phase for several parameters, including the kinetic of GC and ACTH release, the adrenal level of MC2R (ACTH receptor) expression, the p-PKA/PKA ratio as ACTH-dependent mechanism of signal transduction, as well as adrenal expression of IL-1β and its receptor, EPAC2 and PGE2 synthase. Our results reveal the existence of two phases involved in GC synthesis during Tc infection in mice, an initial one dealing with the well-known ACTH-dependent pathway, followed by a further ACTH-hyporesponsive phase. Furthermore, inflamed adrenal microenvironment may tune the production of intracellular mediators that also operate upon GC synthesis, like PGE2 synthase and EPAC2, as emerging driving forces for GC production in the advanced course of Tc infection. In essence, GC production seems to be associated with a biphasic action of PGE2, suggesting that the effect of PGE2/cAMP in the ACTH-independent second phase may be mediated by EPAC2.Fil: da Silva Oliveira Barbosa, Esdras.     Chromosomal evolution and phylogenetic considerations in cuckoos (Aves, Cuculiformes, Cuculidae).

    The Cuckoos have a long history of difficult classification. The species of this order have been the subject of several studies based on osteology, behavior, ecology, morphology and molecular data. Despite this, the relationship between Cuculiformes and species of other orders remains controversial. In this work, two species of Cuculidae, Guira guira (Gmelin, 1788) and Piaya cayana (Linnaeus, 1766), were analyzed by means of comparative chromosome painting in order to study the chromosome evolution of this group and to undertake the first chromosome mapping of these species. Our results demonstrate high chromosomal diversity, with 2n = 76 in G. guira, with fission and fusion events involving ancestral syntenies, while P. cayana presented only fissions, which were responsible for the high diploid number of 2n = 90. Interestingly, there were no chromosomal rearrangements in common between these species. Our results, based on Giemsa staining, were compared with previous data for other cuckoos and also with taxa proposed as sister-groups of Cuculiformes (Otidiformes, Musophagiformes and Opisthocomiformes). Cytogenetic comparisons demonstrated that cuckoo species can be divided into at least three major groups. In addition, we found no evidence to place Cuculiformes close to the groups proposed previously as sister-groups

    Avaliação da associação do biosilicato® ao laser de Nd:YAG para o tratamento de cárie/ Nd:YAG biosilicate® association assessment for the treatment of cárie

    A cárie é uma doença infecciosa, transmissível, crônica, multifatorial e de lenta progressão. Ultimamente, há a busca pelo desenvolvimento de tratamentos minimamente invasivos das lesões cariosas com preservação estética. Uma estratégia interessante é o tratamento com Biomateriais e Laserterapia, pois permitiria uma melhor absorção e aproveitamento do Biosilicato® (BS) pelo dente lesionado com intuito de regeneração. Este estudo objetivou a investigação de métodos de aderência de BS ao dente cariado, assim como o desenvolvimento de metodologia para melhor interação do BS com o laser de Nd:YAG. O estudo foi conduzido em 2 fases experimentais. Na primeira, adotou-se o modelo de cárie química em dentina radicular bovina e, após, foi feito o tratamento com as partículas de BS em diferentes veículos de aplicação (água destilada, silicone e gel dental), com posterior avaliação composicional e morfológica, que mostraram a efetividade do tratamento de cárie com o BS veiculado em água destilada. Na segunda fase, a dentina cariada foi tratada com BS, associado ou não à irradiação laser e diferentes fotoabsorvedores, e avaliaram-se a morfologia e temperatura intrapulpar decorrentes dos tratamentos. A irradiação laser após a aplicação do BS, com utilização de carvão como fotoabsorvedor, possibilitou o recobrimento dos túbulos dentinários de forma uniforme, com aspecto de derretimento e recristalização do BS, proveniente do aquecimento promovido pelo laser. Ademais, a temperatura intrapulpar, monitorada durante a etapa de irradiação não apresentou variação superior a 5,6 ºC, que é considerada crítica para a vitalidade da polpa. Em conclusão, o tratamento de BS combinado ao laser de Nd:YAG se mostrou promissor ao tratamento da cárie

    Oxidative stress and mitochondrial adaptive shift during pituitary tumoral growth

    The cellular transformation of normal functional cells to neoplastic ones implies alterations in the cellular metabolism and mitochondrial function in order to provide the bioenergetics and growth requirements for tumour growth progression. Currently, the mitochondrial physiology and dynamic shift during pituitary tumour development are not well understood. Pituitary tumours present endocrine neoplastic benign growth which, in previous reports, we had shown that in addition to increased proliferation, these tumours were also characterized by cellular senescence signs with no indication of apoptosis. Here, we show clear evidence of oxidative stress in pituitary cells, accompanied by bigger and round mitochondria during tumour development, associated with augmented biogenesis and an increased fusion process. An activation of the Nrf2 stress response pathway together with the attenuation of the oxidative damage signs occurring during tumour development were also observed which will probably provide survival advantages to the pituitary cells. These neoplasms also presented a progressive increase in lactate production, suggesting a metabolic shift towards glycolysis metabolism. These findings might imply an oxidative stress state that could impact on the pathogenesis of pituitary tumours. These data may also reflect that pituitary cells can modulate their metabolism to adapt to different energy requirements and signalling events in a pathophysiological situation to obtain protection from damage and enhance their survival chances. Thus, we suggest that mitochondria function, oxidative stress or damage might play a critical role in pituitary tumour progression.Fil: Sabatino, María Eugenia.     High-pressure nebulization as application route for the peritoneal administration of siRNA complexes

    Peritoneal carcinomatosis is a severe form of cancer in the abdomen, currently treated with cytoreductive surgery and intravenous chemotherapy. Recently, nebulization has been proposed as a less invasive strategy for the local delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs. Also, RNA interference has been considered as a potential therapeutic approach for treatment of cancer. In this study, Lipofectamine RNAiMAX/siRNA complexes and cyclodextrin/siRNA complexes are evaluated before and after nebulization. Nebulization of the siRNA complexes does not significantly lower transfection efficiency when compared to non-nebulized complexes. After incubation in ascites fluid, however, the cyclodextrin/siRNA complexes show a drastic decrease in transfection efficiency. For the Lipofectamine RNAiMAX/siRNA complexes, this decrease is less pronounced. It is concluded that nebulization is an interesting technique to distribute siRNA complexes into the peritoneal cavity, providing the complexes are stable in ascites fluid which might be present in the peritoneal cavity

    The seesaw mechanism at TeV scale in the 3-3-1 model with right-handed neutrinos

    We implement the seesaw mechanism in the 3-3-1 model with right-handed neutrinos. This is accomplished by the introduction of a scalar sextet into the model and the spontaneous violation of the lepton number. We identify the Majoron as a singlet under SUL(2)UY(1)SU_L(2)\otimes U_Y(1) symmetry, which makes it safe under the current bounds imposed by electroweak data. The main result of this work is that the seesaw mechanism works already at TeV scale with the outcome that the right-handed neutrino masses lie in the electroweak scale, in the range from MeV to tens of GeV. This window provides a great opportunity to test their appearance at current detectors, though when we contrast our results with some previous analysis concerning detection sensitivity at LHC, we conclude that further work is needed in order to validate this search.Comment: about 13 pages, no figure

    The Origin of Antibunching in Resonance Fluorescence

    Epitaxial quantum dots have emerged as one of the best single-photon sources, not only for applications in photonic quantum technologies but also for testing fundamental properties of quantum optics. One intriguing observation in this area is the scattering of photons with subnatural linewidth from a two-level system under resonant continuous wave excitation. In particular, an open question is whether these subnatural linewidth photons exhibit simultaneously antibunching as an evidence of single-photon emission. Here, we demonstrate that this simultaneous observation of subnatural linewidth and antibunching is not possible with simple resonant excitation. First, we independently confirm single-photon character and subnatural linewidth by demonstrating antibunching in a Hanbury Brown and Twiss type setup and using high-resolution spectroscopy, respectively. However, when filtering the coherently scattered photons with filter bandwidths on the order of the homogeneous linewidth of the excited state of the two-level system, the antibunching dip vanishes in the correlation measurement. Our experimental work is consistent with recent theoretical findings, that explain antibunching from photon-interferences between the coherent scattering and a weak incoherent signal in a skewed squeezed state.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Resonance fluorescence has played a major role in quantum optics with predictions and later experimental confirmation of nonclassical features of its emitted light such as antibunching or squeezing. In the Rayleigh regime where most of the light originates from the scattering of photons with subnatural linewidth, antibunching would appear to coexist with sharp spectral lines. Here, we demonstrate that this simultaneous observation of subnatural linewidth and antibunching is not possible with simple resonant excitation. Using an epitaxial quantum dot for the two-level system, we independently confirm the single-photon character and subnatural linewidth by demonstrating antibunching in a Hanbury Brown and Twiss type setup and using high-resolution spectroscopy, respectively. However, when filtering the coherently scattered photons with filter bandwidths on the order of the homogeneous linewidth of the excited state of the two-level system, the antibunching dip vanishes in the correlation measurement.
