Short-lived particle search procedure in the OPERA experiment. Application to charm decays

    Get PDF
AbstractThe OPERA experiment has recently provided evidence of νμ→ντ neutrino oscillations in appearance mode through the detection of tau leptons produced in ντ Charged Current interactions. The OPERA detector collected data from 2008 to 2012, when it was exposed to the CNGS muon neutrino beam from CERN to Gran Sasso, 730 km away from the source. We report on the search procedure for short-lived particles and on its validation with charmed hadron decays. The latter, produced in about 4% of the neutrino interactions in OPERA, are an important background to the νμ→ντ channel and an ideal control sample as their decay exhibits topological and kinematical features strongly resembling the tau's decay

    Get PDF
[ABSTRACT] Many important filmmakers have perfected their cinematographic technique by filming advertisements. For this reason, it is not surprising that advertising materials are often included when filmmakers donate their work to a film archive. However, these materials are not always properly catalogued and their dissemination and use is quite limited. This paper describes the quantity and variety of advertising documents preserved in the Spanish film archives, emphasizes their importance as primary information sources for understanding the history of advertising in particular and of cinematography in general, and explains some of the difficulties and challenges of analysing them as documents. The challenge of documentary control of these materials lies not only in the amount of work, but 1) the lack of a methodology that encompasses all documentary procedures and 2) the lack of qualified personnel

    Get PDF
[ABSTRACT] The project consists of the development of a system for solving the problem of two dimensional path planning for the navigation of mobile autonomous robots on flat surfaces. This system will be used by the robot guide of the Garcia‐Santesmases museum in the Faculty of Computer Sciences of the Complutense University of Madrid. The robot will be able to reproduce sounds aimed at explaining the different equipment of the museum to its visitors. Likewise we will develop a remote application using wireless technology, which will be connected to the robot in order to monitor its position and state within the museum, and to enable it to be manually controlled. A two dimensional visual enviroment will be created which will simulate the behaviour of the robot in response to the planning made by our system. The enviroment will be composed of different fixed as well as random obstacles

Respondent-Driven Sampling for Surveying Ethnic Minorities in Ecuador

    Get PDF
In this work, we consider the problem of surveying a population of young Indigenous, Montubios and Afro-Ecuadorians to study their living conditions and socioeconomic issues. We conducted a Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) survey in the canton of Riobamba, Ecuador. RDS is a network-based sampling method intended to survey hidden or hard-to-reach populations. We have obtained RDS estimates and confidence intervals of these characteristics. We have illustrated and discussed some of the assumptions of the method using some available diagnostic tools. Our results suggest that RDS is an effective methodology for studying social and economic issues of this ethnic minority in Ecuador. This technique is relatively easy to implement and has the potential to be applied to survey other hidden populations in other settings.

    Get PDF
Peer Reviewe

Role of the dental surgeon in the early detection of adults with underlying HIV infection / AIDS

A review is made of the late diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, a subject of growing interest in public health. It has been estimated that in Europe 30% of all HIV-infected people are unaware of their seropositive condition, and this in turn is associated with a poorer long-term disease prognosis and an increased risk of transmission to other individuals. The role of the dental surgeon in this context could be of great importance, since there are many oral lesions that can suggest the existence of underlying infection. The study also addresses the controversial subject of rapid HIV testing, and whether these tests should be performed on a routine basis in the dental clinic, or whether it is preferable to refer the patient to a specialized center

Surface functionalization of PLGA nanoparticles to increase transport across the BBB for Alzheimers disease

    Get PDF
Alzheimers disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder that accounts for about 60% of all diagnosed cases of dementia worldwide. Although there are currently several drugs marketed for its treatment, none are capable of slowing down or stopping the progression of AD. The role of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) plays a key role in the design of a successful treatment for this neurodegenerative disease. Nanosized particles have been proposed as suitable drug delivery systems to overcome BBB with the purpose of increasing bioavailability of drugs in the brain. Biodegradable poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles (PLGA-NPs) have been particularly regarded as promising drug delivery systems as they can be surface-tailored with functionalized molecules for site-specific targeting. In this review, a thorough discussion about the most recent functionalization strategies based on PLGA-NPs for AD and their mechanisms of action is provided, together with a description of AD pathogenesis and the role of the BBB in brain targeting.A.C. Variation in perceived health across gender, working status, educational level, and regional health care expenditure in Spain (2014–2017)

    Get PDF
A gender perspective was used to analyze whether and how education, unemployment, and per capita public health expenditure were associated with perceived health among the Spanish population between the years 2014 and 2017. Using multilevel methodologies (looking at year, individual, and region) and linear and logistic specifications, we analyzed longitudinal microdata files from the Survey on Living Conditions. The results suggest that women with lower educational levels tend to report worse health than their more educated counterparts. On the other hand, women’s bad health was not associated with unemployment, unlike men’s. Regional per capita public health expenditure was not associated with perceived health in either men or womenthe Health Department of the Regional Andalusian Government (2017–2019) under Grant PI-0457-2016

    Too many XsX's, YsY's and ZsZ's?

A large number of new states have been reported during the last few years in charmonium spectroscopy above the charmed meson production threshold. They have been called XsX's, YsY's, and ZsZ's. We reflect on the influence of thresholds on heavy meson spectroscopy comparing different flavor sectors and quantum numbers. The validity of a quark-model picture above open-flavor thresholds would severely restrict the number of channels that may lodge meson-meson molecules.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
