High-order full discretization for anisotropic wave equations

    Get PDF
Two-dimensional linear wave equation in anisotropic media, on a rectangular domain with initial conditions and periodic boundary conditions, is considered. The energy of the problem is contemplated. The space discretization is reached by means of finite differences on a uniform grid, paying attention to the mixed derivative of the equation. The discrete energy of the semi-discrete problem is introduced. For the time integration of the system of ordinary differential equations obtained, a fourth order exponential splitting method, which is a geometric integrator, is proposed. This time integrator is efficient and easy to implement. The stability condition for time step and space step ratio is deduced. Numerical experiments displaying the good behavior in the long time integration and the efficiency of the numerical solution are provided.MTM2015-66837-P del Ministerio de Economía y Competitivida

Near conserving energy numerical schemes for two-dimensional coupled seismic wave equations

Two-dimensional coupled seismic waves, satisfying the equations of linear isotropic elasticity, on a rectangular domain with initial conditions and periodic boundary conditions, are considered. A quantity conserved by the solution of the continuous problem is used to check the numerical solution of the problem. Second order spatial derivatives, in the x direction, in the y direction and mixed derivative, are approximated by finite differences on a uniform grid. The ordinary second order in time system obtained is transformed into a first order in time system in the displacement and velocity vectors. For the time integration of this system, second order and fourth order exponential splitting methods, which are geometric integrators, are proposed. These explicit splitting methods are not unconditionally stable and the stability condition for time step and space step ratio is deduced. Numerical experiments displaying the good behavior in the long time integration and the efficiency of the numerical solution are provided.MTM2015-66837-P del Ministerio de Economía y Competitivida

Time exponential splitting integrator for the Klein–Gordon equation with free parameters in the Hagstrom–Warburton absorbing boundary conditions

    Get PDF
The Klein–Gordon equation on an infinite two dimensional strip is considered. Numerical computation is reduced to a finite domain by using the Hagstrom–Warburton (H–W) absorbing boundary conditions (ABCs) with free parameters in the formulation of the auxiliary variables. The spatial discretization is achieved by using fourth order finite differences and the time integration is made by means of an efficient and easy to implement fourth order exponential splitting scheme which was used in Alonso-Mallo and Portillo (2016) considering the fixed Padé parameters in the formulation of the ABCs. Here, we generalize the splitting time technique to other choices of the parameters. To check the timeintegrator we consider, on one hand, fourty peso ffixed parameters, the Newmann’s parameters, the Chebyshev’s parameters, the Padé’s parameters and optimal parameters proposed in Hagstrom et al. (2007) and, on the other hand, an adaptive scheme for the dynamic control of the order of absorption and the parameters. We study the efficiency of the splitting scheme by comparing with thefourth-order four-stage Runge–Kutta method.MTM2015-66837-P del Ministerio de Economía y Competitivida

In the middle of the fifteenth century a new technique was introduced in Spain in the art of book publishing: the printing press. Sustainability based-approach to determine the concrete type and reinforcement configuration of TBM tunnels linings. Case study: Extension line to Barcelona Airport T1

    Get PDF
Fibre-reinforced concrete (FRC) is a suitable alternative to the traditional reinforced concrete used in the manufacture of precast segments used to line tunnels excavated with a tunnel boring machine (TBM). Moreover, its use as a structural material has been approved by several national codes and by the current fib Model Code (2010). The use of FRC in segmental linings confers several technical and economic advantages, evidenced by the fact that structural fibres have been used to partially or entirely replace reinforcing bars in many TBM tunnels built over the past 20 years or currently under construction. FRC could also have been used in other tunnels, which are currently in the planning stage or under construction. However, despite its technical suitability and approval in current codes, the use of FRC was not possible in some cases. The impediment has sometimes been an incomplete understanding of the structural behaviour of the material, but a more general motive has been that comparisons of materials have taken into account only direct material costs and have not considered indirect costs or social and environmental factors. The aim of the present research is to develop a method for analysing the sustainability of different concrete and reinforcement configurations for segmental linings of TBM tunnels using the MIVES method (a multi-criteria decision making approach for assessing sustainability). This MCDM method allows minimising subjectivity in decision making while integrating economic, environmental and social factors. The model has been used to assess the sustainability of different alternatives proposed for manufacturing the segmental tunnel lining for the extension of the rail line of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) to Terminal 1 of El Prat Airport in Barcelona.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Fourth order method to compute the volume of archaeological vessels using radial sections: Pintia pottery (Spain) as a case study

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaIn the archaeological community there is an interest in knowing the volume of the vessels rescued in the excavations, to study, among other things, if the capacity measures were standardized. The problem is that sometimes it is not possible to check the volume physically because the piece is too delicate or too large or simply incomplete. There is a fairly widespread idea that it is sufficient to know a radial section of the vessel to reconstruct it in 3D. Then, the volume is approximated by dividing the height in small sub-intervals sufficiently small and in each sub-interval the volume is approximated by that of a cylinder. This is equivalent to using the composite rectangular rule for the squared radius. This method works well if the piece made around is regular, more specifically if the horizontal sections are circumferences. The point is that most archaeological pieces have deformations, which makes the previous method very inaccurate. In this work a method that, instead of using a single section, uses several radial sections equally spaced between 0 and 2π angles and then take the average, is proposed. It is shown that the method gives a volume approach of fourth order with respect to the angle. Numerical experiments are presented on an academic example whose horizontal sections are ellipses, another academic example with less symmetries and an example of a Pintia vessel with an evident deformation in which the proposed method is tested

[EN] Society is constantly striving to promote actions that are environmentally, socially and economically sustainable in the long term. The initiatives that are currently being proposed are not only global, but corporate as well, and they all contribute to a more environmentally-friendly future. In this context, the concept of business ethics arises, referring to the set of arguments that allow to improve the relations between workers and external parties directly related to the business activity. This starting point is essential to explain how achieving an ethical organizational environment may bring about improved economic, social and environmental results. For this reason, this work focuses on discussing business ethics through a literature review and a bibliometric analysis.[ES] La sociedad se esfuerza constantemente en promover acciones que sean sostenibles a largo plazo, desde el punto de vista medioambiental, social y económico.

An evaluation of categories for tactical actions: A preliminary study of combat analysis in taekwondo

Este instrumento permite a entrenadores y deportistas abordar el proceso de análisis de rivales, y utilizar la información obtenida en entrenamientos y competiciónTaekwondo is a combat sport having direct interaction between two competitors, in a shared space and with opposite objectives, in which tactical aspects play a crucial role because of the short duration of the contest and the quick interaction between opponents. Little research has been conducted about the tactical analysis of rivals in this sport; therefore, the objective of this study was to show how to perform a complete taekwondo fight analysis. The methodology consisted of two parts: (a) analysis and comparison of previous research to analyse categories in taekwondo, providing the study with more comprehensive categorizations; and (b) development of a registering tool based on the new categories that enabled the research to show what happens to a competitor during a taekwondo fight. Finally, the instrument was used to validate the tool and new categories. The tool allowed coaches and athletes to approach rivals analysis to use this information obtained in trainings and competition
