    A map for heavy inertial particles in fluid flows

    We introduce a map which reproduces qualitatively many fundamental properties of the dynamics of heavy particles in fluid flows. These include a uniform rate of decrease of volume in phase space, a slow-manifold effective dynamics when the single parameter ss (analogous of the Stokes number) approaches zero, the possibility of fold caustics in the "velocity field", and a minimum, as a function of ss, of the Lyapunov (Kaplan-Yorke) dimension of the attractor where particles accumulate.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

    Conceptualizing sexual and gender-based violence in European asylum reception centers

    Background: Sexual and gender based violence (SGBV) is a major public health problem and a violation of human rights. Refugees, asylum seekers and migrants are exposed to a constant risk for both victimization and perpetration. Yet, in the context of European asylum reception centers (EARF) professionals are also considered to be at risk. Our study explores the conceptualization of SGBV that residents and professionals have in this specific context. Further, we intent to identify key socio-demographic characteristics that are associated with SGBV conceptualization for both groups. Methods: We developed a cross-sectional study using the Senperforto project database. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with residents (n=398) and professionals (n=202) at EARF. A principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted to variables related with knowledge on SGBV. Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were applied to understand if significant statistical association exists with socio-demographic characteristics (significant level 0.5%). Results: The majority of residents were male (64.6%), aged from 19 to 29years (41.4%) and single (66.8%); for professionals the majority were women (56.2%), aged from 30 to 39years (42.3%) and married (56.8%). PCA for residents resulted in 14 dimensions of SGBV representing 83.56% of the total variance of the data, while for professionals it resulted in 17 dimensions that represent 86.92% of the total variance of the data. For both groups differences in SGBV conceptualization were found according to host country, sex, age and marital status. Specific for residents we found differences according to the time of arrival to Europe/host country and type of accommodation, while for professionals differences were found according to legal status and education skills. Conclusion: Residents and professionals described different conceptualization of SGBV, with specific types of SGBV not being recognized as a violent act. Primary preventive strategies in EARF should focus on reducing SGBV conceptualization discrepancies, taking into account socio-demographic characteristics

    [Resumo] Estudos e pesquisas vem sendo desenvolvidos no campo da inteligencia humana com implicaçoes fortes para mudanças na educação; dentre elas, destacamos a abordagem cognitiva da inteligencia humana que compreende a inteligencia em função dos processos que sao utilizados na resolução de determinado problema. Ressaltamos Robert J. Sternberg com seus estudos sobre inteligencia prática e social. Estas investigaçoes incluem características ou propriedades do "mundo real", tentando descobrir os funcionamentos mediante os quais os sujeitos tomam decisoes. As pesquisas de Stemberg, em suas conclus5es ressaltam e questionam múltiplos pressupostos que ternos sobre a avaliaçao, evolução e sobre o comportamento humano. Este trabalho refere-se a resultados de pesquisa realizada na cidade do Riode Janeiro - Brasil - com estudantes de escola pública e privada de classe regular e especial - com indicadores de altas habilidades. Foi possível construir a partir dos dados coletados urna proposta de significados e prováveis açoes que facilitam a resolução de problemas academicos, práticos, sociais e afetivos. Esses significados, quando esclarecidos, podem favorecer a percepção dos mecanismos utilizados pelos alunos em seu processo de solução de problemas novos seja na vida cotidiana, seja na vida escolar

    É sempre com o maior agrado que se vê irromper à luz do dia uma obra sobre a personalidade do pensador açoriano. Ainda mais quando esse produto foge do estilo apologético e se poderá guindar à altura dos escritos de Leonardo Coimbra, Joaquim de Carvalho, António Sérgio, Joel Serrão ou Eduardo Lourenço (que o produtor da obra cita como excepções à regra encomiástica que domina os escritos sobre o filósofo). Ainda que o autor, humildemente, diga que a presente obra apenas pretende “acrescentar alguma coisa ao conhecimento de uma figura (e duma época) tão importante na nossa história cultural”(p. 7). E poderíamos somar mais uma qualidade pois, ao contrário de outras obras, não se limita ao estudo do pensamento filosófico do autor1. A reflexão que, agora, efectuamos pretende ser sistémica sem contudo ser sistemática. Sistémica porque obedece ao sistema das questões que a obra nos foi suscitando ao longo da sua leitura e, pela razão enunciada, não abordará sistematicamente todas as temáticas deste escrito
