The extensive age gradient of the Carina dwarf galaxy
The evolution of small systems such as dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph) is
likely to have been a balance between external environmental effects and
internal processes within their own relatively shallow potential wells.
Assessing how strong such environmental interactions may have been is therefore
an important element in understanding the baryonic evolution of dSphs and their
derived dark matter distribution.
Here we present results from a wide-area CTIO/MOSAIC II photometric survey of
the Carina dSph, reaching down to about two magnitudes below the oldest main
sequence turn-off (MSTO). This data-set enables us to trace the structure of
Carina in detail out to very large distances from its center, and as a function
of stellar age.
We observe the presence of an extended structure made up primarily of ancient
MSTO stars, at distances between 25arcmin-60arcmin from Carina's center,
confirming results in the literature that Carina extends well beyond its
nominal tidal radius.
The large number statistics of our survey reveals features such as isophote
twists and tails that had gone undetected in other previous shallower surveys.
This is the first time that such unambiguous signs of tidal disruption have
been found in a Milky Way "classical" dwarf other than Sagittarius.
We also demonstrate the presence of a negative age gradient in Carina
directly from its MSTOs, and trace it out to very large distances from the
galaxy center. The signs of interaction with the Milky Way make it unclear
whether the age gradient was already in place before Carina underwent tidal
disruption.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letter
Cultural and communication industries : myth and logic of the terms creativity and entrepreneurial innovation
Introduction: Politicians, economists, diverse institutions, including the university, advertisers, and the media repeat in their discourses, over and over again, the mantra of entrepreneurship and innovation as sacred formulas that can put an end to the economic, political and social crises in which the globalised world is immersed. This article aims to clarify the myth and logic of these concepts, based on the case study of the cultural and media industries. Methods: The study is based on the Socratic method. Bibliographic and hemerographic analyses were carried out to answer the following questions: What are the different meanings associated to the terms creativity and innovation? Which of the different meanings that are associated to the terms creativity and innovation do public and private authorities refer to in these times of crisis? Why? Which are the valid meanings? How can the case study method be applied to the cultural and media industries in this regard? Results: The case studies show that the true meaning of the terms creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurs have little to do with the meanings mostly invoked by the public and private powers. Conclusions: the critical analysis puts into question the different theoretical contributions that identify extraordinary mental processes as the basis for acts of creation and innovation. Anyone who knows the workings of the cultural and media industries and their political, economic and social environments can come up with a creative solution to a problem if this solution involves a previously unknown method. In other words, this is the logic of the entrepreneur who creates and innovates in any of the seven areas of opportunity identified by Drucker: the unexpected; the incongruity; the innovation based on process need; changes in industry and market structure; demographics; changes in perception, mood and meaning; and new knowledge, both scientific and non-scientific. The article explains these areas of opportunity based on the case studies of the cultural and media industries
Mourning heritage and museum: memory, education, morbidity and consumption. Notes for a possible musealization of the Valle de los Caídos.
espacio urbano. The announcement of the government of Spain of

Evaluating the impact of strategic personnel policies using a MILP model: the public university case
Purpose: The main purpose of the paper is to evaluate the impact of diverse personnel policies around personnel promotion in the design of the strategic staff plan for a public university. The strategic staff planning consists in the determination of the size and composition of the workforce for an organization. Design/methodology/approach: The staff planning is solved using a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model. The MILP model represents the organizational structure of the university, the personnel categories and capacity decisions, the demand requirements, the required service level and budget restrictions. All these aspects are translated into a set of data, as well as the parameters and constraints building up the mathematical model for optimization. The required data for the model is adopted from a Spanish public university. Findings: The development of appropriate policies for personnel promotion can effectively reduce the number of dismissals while proposing a transition towards different preferable workforce structures in the university. Research limitations/implications: The long term staff plan for the university is solved by the MILP model considering a time horizon of 8 years. For this time horizon, the required input data is derived from current data of the university. Different scenarios are proposed considering different temporal trends for input data, such as in demand and admissible promotional ratios for workers. Originality/value: The literature review reports a lack of formalized procedures for staff planning in universities taking into account, at the same time, the regulations on hiring, dismissals, promotions and the workforce heterogeneity, all considered to optimize workforce size and composition addressing not only an economic criteria, but also the required workforce expertise and the quality in the service offered. This paper adopts a formalized procedure developed by the authors in previous works, and exploits it to assess the impact of various personnel policies in the staff planning for a particular university case, and this is the principal contribution of the paper.Postprint (published version
Higgs boson precision measurements at a 125 GeV muon collider
The s-channel resonant production of the Higgs boson at a 125 GeV muon collider enables a unique way to determine the Higgs properties. However, a clear picture of the achievable Higgs precision has not yet been established. We perform a phenomenological study of the Higgs measurements at such a resonant muon collider Higgs factory and present a systematic, detailed, and consistent extraction of Higgs precision measurements. Many new aspects about the line shape scan, including the scaling with luminosity, optimal scan range, minimal scan steps, correlations with exclusive measurement, effective cross section modeling, etc., are quantitatively studied in this work. All major exclusive Higgs channels are simulated and analyzed with Standard Model background, detection efficiencies, acceptance, angular distributions, and cross -channel correlations. Global analyses of the Higgs couplings are performed in the kappa framework and the effective-field-theory one. The results suggest that the 125 GeV muon-collider Higgs factory provides significant improvement to the Higgs coupling reach of the High-Luminosity LHC and provides independent and distinct Higgs precision information concerning future e+e- colliders. We report results for both 5 and 20 fb-1 integrated luminosity. These results provide comprehensive and quantitative physics understandings helpful in planning for the muon collider road map and global high-energy physics programs.FEDER/Junta de Andalucia project P18-FRJ-3735National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) 12035008United States Department of Energy (DOE) DE-SC0022345National Science Foundation (NSF) PHY-160761
Global analysis of electroweak data in the Standard Model
We perform a global fit of electroweak data within the Standard Model, using state-of-the art
experimental and theoretical results, including a determination of the electromagnetic coupling at the
electroweak scale based on recent lattice calculations. In addition to the posteriors for all parameters
and observables obtained from the global fit, we present indirect determinations for all parameters
and predictions for all observables. Furthermore, we present full predictions, obtained using only
the experimental information on Standard Model parameters, and a fully indirect determination of
Standard Model parameters using only experimental information on electroweak data. Finally, we
discuss in detail the compatibility of experimental data with the Standard Model and find a global
