    Photocurrent in nanostructures with asymmetric antidots

    The steady current induced by electromagnetic field in a 2D system with asymmetric scatterers is studied. The scatterers are assumed to be oriented cuts with one diffusive and another specular sides. Besides, the existence of isotropic impurity scatterers is assumed. This simple model simulates the lattice of half-disk which have been studied numerically recently. The model allows the exact solution in the framework of the kinetic equation. The static current response in the second order of electric field is obtained. The photogalvanic tensor contains both responses to linear and circular polarization of electromagnetic field. The model possesses non-analyticity with regards to the rate of impurity scattering.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    Maximal height statistics for 1/f^alpha signals

    Numerical and analytical results are presented for the maximal relative height distribution of stationary periodic Gaussian signals (one dimensional interfaces) displaying a 1/f^alpha power spectrum. For 0<alpha<1 (regime of decaying correlations), we observe that the mathematically established limiting distribution (Fisher-Tippett-Gumbel distribution) is approached extremely slowly as the sample size increases. The convergence is rapid for alpha>1 (regime of strong correlations) and a highly accurate picture gallery of distribution functions can be constructed numerically. Analytical results can be obtained in the limit alpha -> infinity and, for large alpha, by perturbation expansion. Furthermore, using path integral techniques we derive a trace formula for the distribution function, valid for alpha=2n even integer. From the latter we extract the small argument asymptote of the distribution function whose analytic continuation to arbitrary alpha > 1 is found to be in agreement with simulations. Comparison of the extreme and roughness statistics of the interfaces reveals similarities in both the small and large argument asymptotes of the distribution functions.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, RevTex

    International audienceThis paper describes a new ozone column retrieval algorithm and its application to SCIAMACHY measurements. The TOSOMI algorithm is based on the Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) technique and implements several improvements over older algorithms. These improvements include aspects like (i) the explicit treatment of rotational Raman scattering, (ii) an improved air-mass factor formulation which is based on a simulation of the reflectivity spectrum and a subsequent DOAS fit of this simulated spectrum, (iii) the use of an improved ozone climatology and a column dependent air-mass factor, (iv) the use of daily varying ECMWF temperature profile analyses. The results of three validation exercises are reported. The TOSOMI columns are compared with an extensive set of ground-based observations (Brewer, Dobson) for the years 2003 and 2004. Secondly, a direct comparison for January?June 2003 with two new GOME retrievals, GDP Version 4 and TOGOMI, is presented. Third, data assimilation is used to study the dependence of the TOSOMI columns with retrieval parameters such as the viewing angle, cloud fraction and geographical location. These comparisons show a good consistency on the percent level between the GOME and SCIAMACHY algorithms. The present TOSOMI implementation (v0.32) shows an offset of about ?1.5% with respect to ground-based observations and the GOME retrievals

    Self-Reported Visual Complaints in People with Parkinson's Disease:A Systematic Review

    BACKGROUND: Scientific research increasingly focuses on visual symptoms of people with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, this mostly involves functional measures, whereas self-reported data are equally important for guiding clinical care. OBJECTIVE: This review sprovides an overview of the nature and prevalence of self-reported visual complaints by people with PD, compared to healthy controls. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed. Studies from three databases (PubMed, PsycInfo, and Web of Science) were screened for eligibility. Only studies that reported results of visual self-reports in people with idiopathic PD were included. RESULTS: One hundred and thirty-nine eligible articles were analyzed. Visual complaints ranged from function-related complaints (e.g., blurred vision, double vision, increased sensitivity to light or changes in contrast sensitivity) to activity-related complaints (e.g., difficulty reading, reaching, or driving). Visual complaints were more prevalent in people with PD compared to healthy controls. The presence of visual complaints leads to a reduced quality of life (QoL). Increased prevalence and severity of visual complaints in people with PD are related to longer disease duration, higher disease severity, and off-state. CONCLUSION: A large proportion of people with PD have visual complaints, which negatively affect QoL. Complaints are diverse in nature, and specific and active questioning by clinicians is advised to foster timely recognition, acknowledgement, and management of these complaints

    Critical behaviour of the Rouse model for gelling polymers

    It is shown that the traditionally accepted "Rouse values" for the critical exponents at the gelation transition do not arise from the Rouse model for gelling polymers. The true critical behaviour of the Rouse model for gelling polymers is obtained from spectral properties of the connectivity matrix of the fractal clusters that are formed by the molecules. The required spectral properties are related to the return probability of a "blind ant"-random walk on the critical percolating cluster. The resulting scaling relations express the critical exponents of the shear-stress-relaxation function, and hence those of the shear viscosity and of the first normal stress coefficient, in terms of the spectral dimension dsd_{s} of the critical percolating cluster and the exponents σ\sigma and τ\tau of the cluster-size distribution.Comment: 9 pages, slightly extended version, to appear in J.     Confirmatory factor analysis of the Dutch Screening Visual Complaints questionnaire in people with multiple sclerosis

    BACKGROUND: Visual complaints among people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) are common, but often difficult to recognize. The Screening Visual Complaints questionnaire (SVCq) has been developed to screen for visual complaints in people with a neurodegenerative disease, including multiple sclerosis (MS). A previous study performed a factor analysis in a normal population which revealed an acceptable one-factor model, a three-factor model and a five-factor model within the SVCq. To increase the usability of the SVCq in people with MS, the purpose of the current study was to investigate the fit of the three models in a cohort of pwMS. RESULTS: The confirmatory factor analysis on the SVCq in 493 people with MS showed good fit for all the models. The three-factor model (diminished visual perception, altered visual perception and ocular discomfort) outperformed the one-factor model. The five-factor model outperformed both models, which showed that dividing the first factor (diminished visual perception) into three more factors (function-related, luminance-related and task-related) has merit. CONCLUSIONS: All models may be useful in clinical care for pwMS. The one-factor model may give a quick overview of the presence and severity of visual complaints in general. The individual factors, of either the three- or the five factor models, may contribute to a better recognition of the nature of visual complaints in pwMS and may guide further steps in rehabilitation for pwMS with visual complaints

The work described in this paper is part of the IROMEC project (Interactive Robotic Social Mediators as Companions) that recognizes the important role of play in child development and targets children who are prevented from or inhibited in playing. The project investigates the role of an interactive, autonomous robotic toy in therapy and education for children with special needs. This paper specifically addresses the therapeutic and educational objectives related to children with autism. In recent years, robots have already been used to teach basic social interaction skills to children with autism. The added value of the IROMEC robot is that play scenarios have been developed taking children's specific strengths and needs into consideration and covering a wide range of objectives in children's development areas (sensory, communicational and interaction, motor, cognitive and social and emotional). The paper describes children's developmental areas and illustrates how different experiences and interactions with the IROMEC robot are designed to target objectives in these areas.Final Published versio
