Tipología formal y función estilística de la referencia a la muerte en los epigramas funerarios de Ánite de Tegea

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the set of devices to mention death attested in the extant funerary epigramms by Anyte from Tegea. The analysis phocuses on (i) formal procedures to mention death; (ii) the implied content of the mentions (when relevant); and (iii) the imagery of death; the evolution of each factor from early epigramms (both literary and inscriptional) up to Anyte' s time is considered. The analysis makes it possible (i) to put forward a typology both of the procedure of the reference and of the images used, stating the relevant parameters; (ii) to state some of the principles underlying the attested devices of reference to death; (iii) to highlight the stylistic relevance of these devices, both generally, and in Anyte's extant work; (iv) to achieve a panoramic view of the evolution of the genre

Hypercube algorithms on mesh connected multicomputers

    Get PDF
A new methodology named CALMANT (CC-cube Algorithms on Meshes and Tori) for mapping a type of algorithm that we call CC-cube algorithm onto multicomputers with hypercube, mesh, or torus interconnection topology is proposed. This methodology is suitable when the initial problem can be expressed as a set of processes that communicate through a hypercube topology (a CC-cube algorithm). There are many important algorithms that fit into the CC-cube type. CALMANT is based on three different techniques: (a) the standard embedding to assign the processes of the algorithm to the nodes of the mesh multicomputer; (b) the communication pipelining technique to increase the level of communication parallelism inherent in the CC-cube algorithms; and (c) optimal message-scheduling algorithms proposed in this work in order to avoid conflicts and minimizing in this way the communication time. Although CALMANT is proposed for multicomputers with different interconnection network topologies, the paper only focuses on the particular case of meshes.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

A study of the communication cost of the FFT on torus multicomputers

    Get PDF
The computation of a one-dimensional FFT on a c-dimensional torus multicomputer is analyzed. Different approaches are proposed which differ in the way they use the interconnection network. The first approach is based on the multidimensional index mapping technique for the FFT computation. The second approach starts from a hypercube algorithm and then embeds the hypercube onto the torus. The third approach reduces the communication cost of the hypercube algorithm by pipelining the communication operations. A novel methodology to pipeline the communication operations on a torus is proposed. Analytical models are presented to compare the different approaches. This comparison study shows that the best approach depends on the number of dimensions of the torus and the communication start-up and transfer times. The analytical models allow us to select the most efficient approach for the available machine.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Fishing the Targets of Bioactive Compounds from Psidium guajava L. Leaves in the Context of Diabetes

    Get PDF
Psidium guajava L. (guava) leaves have demonstrated their in vitro and in vivo effect against diabetes mellitus (DM). However, there is a lack of literature concerning the effect of the individual phenolic compounds present in the leaves in DM disease. The aim of the present work was to identify the individual compounds in Spanish guava leaves and their potential contribution to the observed anti-diabetic effect. Seventy-three phenolic compounds were identified from an 80% ethanol extract of guava leaves by high performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization and quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The potential anti-diabetic activity of each compound was evaluated with the DIA-DB web server that uses a docking and molecular shape similarity approach. The DIA-DB web server revealed that aldose reductase was the target protein with heterogeneous affinity for compounds naringenin, avicularin, guaijaverin, quercetin, ellagic acid, morin, catechin and guavinoside C. Naringenin exhibited the highest number of interactions with target proteins dipeptidyl peptidase-4, hydroxysteroid 11-beta dehydrogenase 1, aldose reductase and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor. Compounds catechin, quercetin and naringenin displayed similarities with the known antidiabetic drug tolrestat. In conclusion, the computational workflow showed that guava leaves contain several compounds acting in the DM mechanism by interacting with specific DM protein targets.Spanish Government CTQ2017-87974-RSupercomputing infrastructure of Poznan Supercomputing CenterEuropean CommissionSpanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness - MCIN/AEI RTI2018-099835-A-I00Supercomputing infrastructure of the NLHPCSupercomputer center of UiT-the Arctic University of Norway ECM-0

Bioprocessing of Brewers’ Spent Grain Enhances Its Antioxidant Activity: Characterization of Phenolic Compounds and Bioactive Peptides

    Get PDF
This research was developed under the project "FUNBREW Biotransformation of brewers' spent grain: increased functionality for novel food applications" funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program under grant agreement No. 727473 (ERANet SUSFOOD2).Brewers’ spent grain (BSG) is the major by-product of the brewing industry which remain largely unutilized despite its nutritional quality. In this study, the effects of fermentation on BSG antioxidant potential were analyzed. A biotechnological protocol including the use of xylanase followed by fermentation with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (Lactobacillus plantarum) PU1, PRO17, and H46 was used. Bioprocessed BSG exhibited enhanced antioxidant potential, characterized by high radical scavenging activity, long-term inhibition of linoleic acid oxidation and protective effect toward oxidative stress on human keratinocytes NCTC 2544. Immunolabelling and confocal laser microscopy showed that xylanase caused an extensive cell wall arabinoxylan disruption, contributing to the release of bound phenols molecules, thus available to further conversion through lactic acid bacteria metabolism. To clarify the role of fermentation on the antioxidant BSG potential, phenols were selectively extracted and characterized through HPLC-MS techniques. Novel antioxidant peptides were purified and identified in the most active bioprocessed BSG.European Union (EU) 72747

Towards Certified Model Checking for PLTL using One-pass Tableaux

    Get PDF
The standard model checking setup analyses whether the given system specification satisfies a dedicated temporal property of the system, providing a positive answer here or a counter-example. At the same time, it is often useful to have an explicit proof that certifies the satisfiability. This is exactly what the {\it certified model checking (CMC)} has been introduced for. The paper argues that one-pass (context-based) tableau for PLTL can be efficiently used in the CMC setting, emphasising the following two advantages of this technique. First, the use of the context in which the eventualities occur, forces them to fulfil as soon as possible. Second, a dual to the tableau sequent calculus can be used to formalise the certificates. The combination of the one-pass tableau and the dual sequent calculus enables us to provide not only counter-examples for unsatisfied properties, but also proofs for satisfied properties that can be checked in a proof assistant. In addition, the construction of the tableau is enriched by an embedded solver, to which we dedicate those (propositional) computational tasks that are costly for the tableaux rules applied solely. The combination of the above techniques is particularly helpful to reason about large (system) specifications

The Interface between Depression and Alzheimer’s Disease. A Comprehensive Approach

    Get PDF
Abstract Depression and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) are frequent interacting diseases in the elderly with a negative impact on the quality of life of patients and caregivers. Late-life depression may be regarded either as an early symptom of AD or a risk factor for AD, depending on the context. This review was focused on the latest developments in the fields of the neurobiological basis and treatment of depression in AD. We found that some plausible hypotheses are emerging to correlate with depression in AD, such as neuroinflammation and dysimmune regulation. It seems that depression is not related to amyloid deposition, but this issue is not completely resolved. The response to antidepressants is controversial according to the evidence from 10 small double-blind randomized placebo-controlled clinical trials with antidepressants in AD patients with depression: four with sertraline, one with three arms (sertraline, mirtazapine, placebo), one with fluoxetine, one with imipramine, one with clomipramine, one with escitalopram, and one with vortioxetine. The total number of treated patients completing the trials was 638. The main criterion of a positive response was a reduction in the scores of clinical scales for depression of at least 50%. The weighted OR (odds ratio) was calculated with the method of Mantel-Haenszel: 1.29; 95% CI: 0.77–2.16. No significant differences were found compared with placebo. Antidepressants did not have a meaningful negative influence on cognition, which was measured with the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) in 18 clinical trials. Alternatives other than drugs are also discussed. Although there have been important advances in this field, pathophysiology and treatment deserve further research
