A social and ecological assessment of tropical land uses at multiple scales: the Sustainable amazon network

    Get PDF
Science has a critical role to play in guiding more sustainable development trajectories. Here, we present the Sustainable Amazon Network (Rede Amazônia Sustentável, RAS): a multidisciplinary research initiative involving more than 30 partner organizations working to assess both social and ecological dimensions of land-use sustainability in eastern Brazilian Amazonia. The research approach adopted by RAS offers three advantages for addressing land-use sustainability problems: (i) the collection of synchronized and co-located ecological and socioeconomic data across broad gradients of past and present human use; (ii) a nested sampling design to aid comparison of ecological and socioeconomic conditions associated with different land uses across local, landscape and regional scales; and (iii) a strong engagement with a wide variety of actors and non-research institutions. Here, we elaborate on these key features, and identify the ways in which RAS can help in highlighting those problems in most urgent need of attention, and in guiding improvements in land-use sustainability in Amazonia and elsewhere in the tropics. We also discuss some of the practical lessons, limitations and realities faced during the development of the RAS initiative so far

Measurement of antiproton production from antihyperon decays in pHe collisions at √sNN=110GeV

    Get PDF
The interpretation of cosmic antiproton flux measurements from space-borne experiments is currently limited by the knowledge of the antiproton production cross-section in collisions between primary cosmic rays and the interstellar medium. Using collisions of protons with an energy of 6.5 TeV incident on helium nuclei at rest in the proximity of the interaction region of the LHCb experiment, the ratio of antiprotons originating from antihyperon decays to prompt production is measured for antiproton momenta between 12 and 110GeV\!/c . The dominant antihyperon contribution, namely Λ¯ → p¯ π+ decays from promptly produced Λ¯ particles, is also exclusively measured. The results complement the measurement of prompt antiproton production obtained from the same data sample. At the energy scale of this measurement, the antihyperon contributions to antiproton production are observed to be significantly larger than predictions of commonly used hadronic production models

Observation of the doubly charmed baryon decay Ξcc++→Ξc′+π+

    Get PDF
The Ξcc++→Ξc′+π+ decay is observed using proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1. The Ξcc++→Ξc′+π+ decay is reconstructed partially, where the photon from the Ξc′+→Ξc+γ decay is not reconstructed and the pK−π+ final state of the Ξc+ baryon is employed. The Ξcc++→Ξc′+π+branching fraction relative to that of the Ξcc++→Ξc+π+ decay is measured to be 1.41 ± 0.17 ± 0.10, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The decays B+→J/ψπ+π−K+B^+\rightarrow J/\psi \pi^+ \pi^- K^+ are studied using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb−1^{-1} collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions between 2011 and 2018. Precise measurements of the ratios of branching fractions with the intermediate ψ2(3823)\psi_2(3823), χc1(3872)\chi_{c1}(3872) and ψ(2S)\psi(2S) states are reported. The decay of B+→ψ2(3872)K+B^+\rightarrow \psi_2(3872)K^+ with ψ2(3823)→Jψπ+π−\psi_2(3823)\rightarrow J\psi\pi^+\pi^- is observed for the first time with a significance of 5.1 standard deviations. The mass differences between the ψ2(3823)\psi_2(3823), χc1(3872)\chi_{c1}(3872) and ψ(2S)\psi(2S) states are measured to be mχc1(3872)−mψ2(3823)=47.50±0.53±0.13 MeV/c2 ,mψ2(3823)−mψ(2S)=137.98±0.53±0.14 MeV/c2 ,mχc1(3872)−mψ(2S)=185.49±0.06±0.03 MeV/c2 , \begin{array}{rcl} m_{\chi_{c1(3872)}} - m_{\psi_2(3823)} &= & 47.50 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.13\,\mathrm{MeV/}c^2\,, \\ m_{\psi_2(3823)} - m_{\psi(2S)} &= & 137.98 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.14\,\mathrm{MeV/}c^2\,, \\ m_{\chi_{c1}(3872)} - m_{\psi(2S)} &= & 185.49 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.03\,\mathrm{MeV/}c^2\,, \end{array} resulting in the most precise determination of the χc1(3782)\chi_{c1}(3782) mass. The width of the ψ2(3823)\psi_2(3823) state is found to be below 5.2MeV at 90\% confidence level. The Breit-Wigner width of the χc1(3872)\chi_{c1}(3872) state is measured to be Γχc1(3872)BW=0.96−0.18+0.19±0.21MeV, \Gamma^{\mathrm{BW}}_{\chi_{c1}(3872)} = 0.96^{+0.19}_{-0.18}\pm0.21 \mathrm{MeV}, which is inconsistent with zero by 5.5 standard deviations.Comment: 26 pages, 3 figures. Study of charmonium and charmonium-like contributions in B+ → J/ψηK+ decays

A study of B+→ J/ψηK+ decays, followed by J/ψ → μ+μ− and η → γγ, is performed using a dataset collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1. The J/ψη mass spectrum is investigated for contributions from charmonia and charmonium-like states. Evidence is found for the B+→ (ψ2(3823) → J/ψη)K+ and B+→ (ψ(4040) → J/ψη)K+ decays with significance of 3.4 and 4.7 standard deviations, respectively. This constitutes the first evidence for the ψ2(3823) → J/ψη decay

Observation of the B0→¯D*0K+π− and B0s→¯D*0K−π+ decays

    Get PDF
The first observations of B0→D¯∗(2007)0K+π- and Bs0→D¯∗(2007)0K-π+ decays are presented, and their branching fractions relative to that of the B0→D¯∗(2007)0π+π- decay are reported. These modes can potentially be used to investigate the spectroscopy of charm and charm-strange resonances and to determine the angle γ of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle. It is also important to understand them as a source of potential background in determinations of γ from B+→DK+ and B0→DK+π- decays. The analysis is based on a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1 of proton-proton collision data at 13 TeV center-of-mass energy recorded with the LHCb detector. The D¯∗(2007)0 mesons are fully reconstructed in the D¯0π0 and D¯0γ channels with the D¯0→K+π- decay. A novel weighting method is used to subtract background while simultaneously applying an event-by-event efficiency correction to account for resonant structures in the decays
