River recreation is a rapidly expanding source of economic productivity. Angler spending has been used as the basis for estimating the regional economic estimates of local income and jobs in several water-limited systems of the western United States and Mexico. However, the contribution of outdoor recreation to the economies of regions that do not experience water scarcity continues to be underappreciated. This paper estimates the economic contribution of angling to the lower Connecticut River Watershed (CRW) economy. The authors draw upon existing angler expenditure, river flow and geographic information system (GIS) data to relate anger use of the lower CRW and expenditures to river flows. The authors then translate angler expenditures into state income and employment using a regional economic multiplier. The results show that fishing expenditures of 62.8millionperyearequateto62.8 million per year equate to 74.2 million annually in supply chain revenues which supports 1660 jobs. The authors identified a significant positive relationship between fishing intensity and river flow rates, which suggests that decreasing current water diversions on the lower CRW by just 25% would add an additional $37 million and 638 jobs to Connecticut’s economy. The findings demonstrate that investments in managing the health the CRW through flow restoration can have large economic and ecological pay-offs

    How do relationships begin?

In this paper we address the issue ‘How do relationships begin?’ Based on a review of work within theIMP Approach on stage and state models of relationship evolution, we conclude that very littleattention has been paid to beginnings of relationships. We discuss why this might be so, and why theissue deserves more consideration. Based on a case study, we make a first start at discussing how wemay conceptualise and discuss relationship beginnings. Furthermore, we depict a firm’s ‘relationshipinitiation profile’ and suggest that a firm may benefit from examining its profile and the costs andbenefits associated with it. Lastly, we propose issues which may be pursued in further research. Keywords: relationship evolution, stage model, state model, beginning, relationship initiation profile

The written declaration on epilepsy : an important achievement for Europe and beyond

On 15th September 2011, the European Written Declaration on Epilepsy was passed by the European Union (EU) Parliament. This was a significant moment for all people who have been fighting over the years for a just recognition of the importance of epilepsy in the European political agenda. The whole process described below included several months of concerted effort by Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and by Epilepsy Advocacy Europe (EAE), a joint task force of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE). ILAE and IBE member associations in Europe and many individuals also contributed greatly to the success of this initiative.peer-reviewe

Library leadership: innovative options for designing training programmes to build leadership competencies in the digital age

    Get PDF
Library leaders may not be fully equipped to deal with the demands and rigours of the digital age and its consumers. The advent of the internet, search engines and social media require a paradigm shift in the development of these leaders. Whilst much has been written about the required competencies, there seems to be no clear guiding principle on how the development should take place. The authors propose that the development of library leaders is a process, best illustrated through movement through Drotter’s Leadership Pipeline. The importance of thinking preferences, based on Herrmann’s Whole Brain Model, is highlighted and it is shown how these often clog development through this Pipeline. Utilising data from the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI) assessments of the 120 participants in six of the Centre for African Library Leadership (CALL) development programmes, the authors show how the thinking preferences of these library leaders could enable or detract from their readiness to develop the appropriate competencies in the digital age. Recommendations are made on how best to overcome this to prepare library leaders to deal with the requirements of the digital age consumer.http://sajlis.journals.ac.za/am201

Goal processes & self-efficacy related to psychological distress in head & neck cancer patients and their partners

Purpose and objective of the research: In this cross-sectional study we used a self-regulation perspective to better understand the experience of psychological distress in head & neck (H&N) cancer patients and their partners. We examined which goals they valued and the extent to which patients and partners experience goal disturbance. Furthermore, associations were explored between goal disturbance, goal reengagement, (goal)self-efficacy, and psychological distress. Methods and sample: H&N cancer patients and their partners, recruited from the Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam (N = 40), were interviewed and completed questionnaires, assessing the above aspects of the self-regulation theory. Key results: H&N cancer patients and their partners experienced goal disturbance from the disease. Such disturbances were in patients significantly related to more psychological distress. Higher levels of goal re-engagement were related to less psychological distress, again only significantly in patients. More self-efficacy was significantly associated with less psychological distress in both patients and partners. Conclusions: Self-regulation abilities as goal re-engagement and self-efficacy may be screened and used as target in future psychological interventions, given their potential to decrease perceived psychological distress. In view of elevated levels of goal disturbances in partners, psychological support for caring relatives in such interventions is recommended. (c) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd

Hansenula polymorpha Aat2p is targeted to peroxisomes via a novel Pex20p-dependent pathway

    Get PDF
Saccharomyces cerevisiae Aat2p contains a peroxisomal targeting signal type-1 and localizes to peroxisomes in oleate-grown cells, but not in glucose-grown cells. Here, we have investigated Aat2p from the yeast Hansenula polymorpha, which lacks a recognizable peroxisomal targeting signal. Aat2p tagged with GFP at its C terminus displays a dual cytosol-peroxisome localization in ethanol-grown cells. The partial peroxisomal localization of Aat2p persisted in the absence of the classical cycling receptors Pex5p and Pex7p but Aat2p targeting to peroxisomes was reduced in cells deleted for the matrix protein import factors PEX1, PEX2 and PEX13. Furthermore, we demonstrate that Aat2p targeting to peroxisomes requires Pex20p. Together, our data identify a Pex20p-dependent pathway for targeting Aat2p to peroxisomes

Activating whole brain® innovation : a means of nourishing multiple intelligence in higher education

    Get PDF
The interconnectedness of the constructs ‘whole brain® thinking’ and ‘multiple intelligence’ forms the epicentre of this article. We depart from the premise that when whole brain® thinking is activated multiple intelligence can be nourished. When this becomes evident in a higher education practice it can be claimed that such a practice is innovative. Whole brain® thinking that informs intelligence and vice versa is inevitable when it comes to facilitating learning with a view to promoting quality learning in the context of higher education. If higher education is concerned about the expectations of industry and the world of work there is no other option as to prepare students in such a way that they develo as holistic – whole brained and intelligent – employers, employees and entrepreneurs who take responsibility for maximising their full potential. Becoming a self-regulated professional and being reflexive are some of the attributes of the 21st century which should be cultivated in all students. Research on whole brain® thinking and multiple intelligence shows that these human attributes form an integral part of one’s interaction with life – one’s environment and especially people as integral part of the environment. This focus on people highlights the need for developing soft skills within every curriculum. The epistemological underpinning of our reporting of experience in practice and research of the application of the principals of the constructs is metareflective in nature. Instead of a typical traditional stance to research we do not report on the numerous sets of data obtained over a period of more than 15 years. Our approach is that of a meta-reflective narrative as most of the studies we were involved in and still are, are reflective as it is most often than not action research-driven. And action research is a reflective process. We report on evidence-based practice that includes fields of specialisation such as health sciences, engineering, academic staff development, financial sciences, teacher education and higher education. Important aspects of any higher education practice, such as curriculum development, facilitating of learning and assessment are addressed. Practice-based evidence of each, where applicable, is offered as claims of innovation.http://www.td-sa.netam201

Identification of the degree of impairment of penile rigidity and durability is an important component in the assessment of ED in both clinical practice and in clinical trials of oral drug treatments for ED. This focus on erection hardness is appropriate because men themselves emphasise this quality when they judge the effectiveness of treatment for ED. This attitude is because the ability to achieve a rigid and durable erection is frequently perceived by affected men as central to their sexual satisfaction and selfimage as sexually competent; loss of this ability may have important adverse effects on their self-esteem, their sexual confidence, and, directly or indirectly, their relationship with their partner. There is a significant positive correlation between improvement in erection hardness and men's sexual self-confidence, sexual enjoyment, and satisfaction with their sexual relationship. Improvement in the rigidity and durability of erections following successful treatment of ED has the potential to allow men to experience better sex, not only by improving erection hardness, but also by restoring their emotional well-being and their partner's satisfaction
