The history of historiography and the challenge of the linguistic turn
This exposition examines the relationship between the history of historiography and the linguistic turn, the latter being considered a challenge to the former. At first we attempt to define the meaning of “the viewpoint of the general history of historiography” by taking the history of historiography in its entirety from the Greeks to the present, thereby undermining the credibility of self-proclaimed “ruptures”, “epistemological cuts”, “revolutions”, “mutations” and “new histories” in the recent developments of the general history of historiography, and thus questioning the “scientific” status of the discourse history. In the second section we try to depict the linguistic turn and the nature of the “challenge” it poses to the history of historiography. In the third section, with examples from Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht and Peter Englund, we qualify the role of Hayden White in the formulation of this challenge and its consequences for the practice of the discourse history. The conclusion resumes the arguments of Siegfried Kracauer, Arnaldo Momigliano, Johan Huizinga, Carlo Ginzburg and Hayden White (his in 2011), which combine to reinforce the importance of considering the entirety of the general history of historiography when dealing with the discourse history, conceived as part of an “intermediate domain” that aspires to a scientific status (the commitment to the truth), but which cannot break free from the construction of collective memory or the settling of accounts with the past, hence the approximate nature of historical knowledge
Why MDA? The pursuit of a Game Design Onthology
An ontology is a set of concepts and categories that represent a domain. There have
been many attempts into creating a widely accepted ontology for the game domain.
Most of them are defined based on an analytical perspective: few have found frequent
use outside universities, as they are not easily translated to the development of games
- a design perspective. There are some core aspects of the domain that harshen the
achievement of this task. Not only this, game designers tends to refuse a methodology
or a structured way of developing a game - the main concern is that it can impair
creativity in a field that could not survive without it. A defined ontology would improve
and mature the growing industry of digital games, both by improving the understanding
of the domain and supporting a structured methodology for designing games. New
ontologies improve problem solving within that domain.
This thesis will describe the aspects of digital games and show how they make it
difficult to create an ontology for the domain, specially when it comes to a designing
perspective. It will follow by disentangling the closest to a unified ontology that there
is for the game domain: the Mechanics, Dynamics and Aesthetics framework, i.e. MDA.
By reviewing the state of art surrounding this framework, this thesis identified gaps
within MDA that impairs its use on a designing perspective, such as the lack of support
to some of the described aspects of digital games and how the industry claims that a
structured methodology would not support the creativity - a core characteristic of the
game’s designing process.
To reduce these gaps, changes in MDA’s taxonomies are proposed - providing better
use for it within a designer’s perspective, achieved by embracing the designing aspects
of the domain and supported by overcoming issues found in the current literature of
game domain.
design. Existem alguns aspectos centrais do domínio que dificultam a realização dessa
tarefa.

Ultrasound wave propagation in retaining system for soil works
The increasing civil works in areas with difficult access and irregular topography in Brazil are producing the use of embankments and slope containtion, associated with prefabricated concrete parts as a structural element. Lock and Load is a containment system formed by the union of two elements, a panel and a buttress, which can be prefabricated or manufactured on site. The set has been widely used in cutting and landfill situations, but there is no methodology for inspection and quality monitoring of its components (plates and buttress) after its demoulding and installation. Nondestructive techniques based on ultrasonic wave propagation are increasingly being used to evaluate concrete homogeneity, to infer mechanical properties and to inspect discontinuities or defects not externally visible. Thus, the objective of this research was to evaluate the feasibility of defining ideal parameters for the use of the ultrasound test in monitoring and inspecting the components of the Lock and Load system and, using these parameters, to evaluate the feasibility of inferring the quality of its components using the test applied directly to them. To reach the objectives, initially the ultrasound inspection methodology was evaluated, considering the type of measurement (direct and indirect), the type of transducer (flat and exponential), the coupling and the transducers frequency (25, 45 and 80 kHz). For the models analysis, aiming the inference of the material quality using the ultrasound test, specimens were molded with coarse aggregates from four different mineralogical origins (basalt, limestone, gneiss and granite), which were test with ultrasound and with static method (compression) to determine the strength and stiffness, which are parameters adopted to represent the material quality. Finally it was tested the applicability of the ultrasound test applied directly on the prefabricated system to infer concrete quality. The results allowed us to define the 45 kHz frequency flat transducer as the most suitable for use in classification and inspections aiming at quality control of the Lock and Load system before installation (direct test) or after installation (indirect test). The prediction models of strength and stiffness were statistically significant for aggregates of all mineralogical origins and the test showed feasibility to be used in the classification and inspection of plates and buttresses, considering stiffness and strengthDoutoradoMétodos não Destrutivos Aplicados a Materiais, Estruturas e ÁrvoresDoutor em Engenharia Agrícol
On the Spinor Representation
A systematic study of the spinor representation by means of the fermionic
physical space is accomplished and implemented. The spinor representation space
is shown to be constrained by the Fierz-Pauli-Kofink identities among the
spinor bilinear covariants. A robust geometric and topological structure can be
manifested from the spinor space, wherein, for instance, the first and second
homotopy groups play prominent roles on the underlying physical properties,
associated to the fermionic fields.Comment: 16 page
Effective lagrangian for a mass dimension one fermionic field in curved spacetime
In this work we use momentum-space techniques to evaluate the propagator
for a spin mass dimension one spinor field on a curved
Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime. As a consequence, we built the one-loop
correction to the effective lagrangian in the coincidence limit. Going further
we compute the effective lagrangian in the finite temperature regime. We arrive
at interesting cosmological consequences, as time-dependent cosmological
`constant', fully explaining the functional form of previous cosmological
models.Comment: 9 pages, 0 figure
On the bilinear covariants associated to mass dimension one spinors
In this paper we approach the issue of Clifford algebra basis deformation,
allowing for bilinear covariants associated to Elko spinors which satisfy the
Fierz-Pauli-Kofink identities. We present a complete analysis of covariance,
taking into account the involved dual structure associated to Elko. Moreover,
the possible generalizations to the recently presented new dual structure are
performed.Comment: 9 pages, 0 figure
