A new red giant-based distance modulus of 13.3 Mpc to the Antennae galaxies and its consequences

The Antennae galaxies are the closest example of an ongoing major galaxy merger, and thereby represent a unique laboratory for furthering the understanding of the formation of exotic objects (e.g., tidal dwarf galaxies, ultra-luminous X-ray sources, super-stellar clusters, etc). In a previous paper HST/WFPC2 observations were used to demonstrate that the Antennae system might be at a distance considerably less than that conventionally assumed in the literature. Here we report new, much deeper HST/ACS imaging that resolves the composite stellar populations, and most importantly, reveals a well-defined red giant branch. The tip of this red giant branch (TRGB) is unambiguously detected at Io(TRGB)=26.65 +/- 0.09 mag. Adopting the most recent calibration of the luminosity of the TRGB then yields a distance modulus for the Antennae of (m-M)o= 30.62 +/- 0.17 corresponding to a distance of 13.3 +/- 1.0 Mpc. This is consistent with our earlier result, once the different calibrations for the standard candle are considered. The Ontology of the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus: Thomistic Form, Suarezian Content

The article will expose the problem of the nature of reality stablished in the first sections of Wittgenstein"s “Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus”, especially the aphorisms 1 to 2.063 seeking to show points of contact between the Aristotelian-Thomistic and Suarezian thought. Initially, (I) a distinction is made between metaphysics and ontology in order to understand why Wittgenstein, notorious for his anti-metaphysical thought, actually ends up producing a theory of reality. Subsequently, (II) the relationship between reality and language will be drawn from the characteristic isomorphism of the Tractatus in which a structural similarity will appear with the Aristotelian-Thomistic thought. This relationship will be the basis for (III) the construction of an ontological image of reality as the condition of possibility for a meaningful language. With this outlook, the (IV) hypothesis of the influence of Francisco Suárez"s thought as the content behind this Wittgensteinian description of reality will be advanced

A subsistência e os fundamentos ontoteológicos do sistema metafísico de Francisco Suárez

Defesa : Curitiba, 08/02/2023Inclui referências: p. 515-537Resumo: Esta tese trata da noção de subsistência e seu impacto na configuração do sistema metafísico de Francisco Suárez, um autor que tem sido reconhecido ao longo do século XX como uma peça chave na transição entre filosofia medieval e filosofia moderna. A partir das análises de Heidegger e Gilson, contudo, os comentadores de Suárez têm se dividido quanto à caracterização de seu pensamento. Alguns acentuam a influência de Avicena e qualificam nosso autor como um essencialista ou um atualista; para outros, a raiz de sua especulação metafísica estaria em Escoto e, sob esta ótica, sua filosofia seria encarada como uma espécie de ontologia transcendental; alguns chamam a atenção para o peso do nominalismo e, por isso, o entendem como um autor que analisa o ente desde sua existência ou como um conceitualista. Os estudos mais atuais têm chamado atenção para a necessidade de se levar em conta as preocupações teológicas de Suárez a fim de corretamente compreender seus posicionamentos ontológicos. A presente investigação se insere nesse contexto: afirmamos que, em Suárez, há um duplo horizonte ontoteológico. O primeiro consiste no esforço por enquadrar o Deus conhecido pela razão no domínio da Metafísica; o segundo, em construir uma ciência do ente que sirva de base para a defesa da dogmática católica, especialmente o mistério da Encarnação, após a crise da Reforma Protestante. Em segundo lugar, é a partir da distinção ontoteológica entre natureza e suposto que surge a noção de subsistência em Suárez. Em função dela, nosso autor modela todo seu sistema metafísico: o conceito de ente e a divisão "ente como nome" e "ente como particípio"; a redução das propriedades transcendentais; a separação entre unidade transcendental e unidade singular; a distinção entre os problemas da individuação e da substância completa; a distinção de razão entre essência e existência; e, por fim, sua teoria das composições reais e modais. O objetivo da pesquisa é mostrar que a noção de subsistência representa não somente o ponto de partida histórico, mas, sobretudo, o fundamento teórico que confere coesão e coerência a todo o edifício das Disputas Metafísicas. Concluímos nossa investigação propondo uma nova interpretação para o pensamento suareziano: o existencialismo formal deflacionado.Abstract: This thesis addresses the notion of subsistence and its impact on the configuration of Francisco Suárez's metaphysical system. Suárez is an author who has been recognized throughout the twentieth century as a key player in the transition between medieval and modern philosophy. Drawing on the analyses of Heidegger and Gilson, however, commentators on Suárez have been divided over the characterization of his thought. Some emphasize the influence of Avicenna and qualify our author as an essentialist or an actualist; for others, the root of his metaphysical speculation would be in Scotus and, from this point of view, his philosophy would be seen as a kind of transcendental ontology; some call attention to the weight of nominalism and, therefore, understand him as an author who analyzes being from its existence or as a conceptualist. Current studies have called attention to the need to take Suarez's theological concerns into account in order to correctly understand his ontological positions. The present investigation is inscribed in this context: we affirm that, in Suarez, there is a double ontotheological horizon. The first consists in an effort to frame the God known by reason within the domain of Metaphysics; the second, seeks to construct a science of being that serves as a basis for the defense of Catholic dogmatics, especially the mystery of the Incarnation, after the crisis of the Protestant Reformation. Second, it is from the ontotheological distinction between nature and supposit that the notion of subsistence emerges in Suarez. Due to it, our author shapes his entire metaphysical system: the concept of being and the division "being as a name" and "being as a participle"; the reduction of transcendental properties; the separation between transcendental unity and singular unity; the distinction between the problems of individuation and of the complete substance; the distinction of reason between essence and existence; and, finally, his theory of real and modal compositions. The aim of the research is to show that the notion of subsistence represents not only the historical starting point, but, above all, the theoretical foundation that gives cohesion and coherence to the whole edifice of the Metaphysical Disputations. We conclude our investigation by proposing a new interpretation for the Suarezian thought: the deflated formal existentialism

Análise de indicadores econômico-financeiros e nível de governança corporativa de empresas comerciais

Segundo a teoria da agência, a governança corporativa surgiu com intuito de assegurar os interesses dos proprietários do capital, pois nem sempre esses proprietários são os gestores das empresas. Intuitivamente é possível supor que os investidores tendem a almejar a maximização de seu retorno, ou seja, o incremento do lucro de seu investimento. Nesse sentido, pode-se inferir que a governança corporativa deveria ser um dos fatores que possuem relação com o desempenho econômico-financeiro de uma empresa. Este trabalho busca relacionar estatisticamente, com uso do teste t, o desempenho de dois grupos de empresas comerciais dos setores de consumo cíclico e não cíclico. Esses grupos estão segregados conforme níveis de governança corporativa elaborados pela BM&FBovespa. Com os resultados, espera-se confirmar ou negar os preceitos teóricos de que as melhores práticas de governança corporativa deveriam proporcionar melhores resultados econômico-financeiros para as entidades. Para efetuar essas comparações foram calculados índices para quatro indicadores, sendo dois relacionados à rentabilidade, um com intuito de mensurar e comparar a posição de liquidez das empresas, e um último referente à participação de capital de terceiros, segundo os dados contábeis disponíveis no portal eletrônico da Comissão de Valores Mobiliários, para o quadriênio 2010-2013. Em contraposição à teoria, em apenas 12,50% dos testes houve diferença estatisticamente significante das médias dos dois grupos e as empresas não listadas no nível mais elevado de governança corporativa tiveram melhor desempenho

Relatório da prática de ensino supervisionada realizada na Escola Secundária Diogo de Gouveia, em Beja

Este relatório final de estágio insere-se na unidade curricular de Prática de Ensino Supervisionada do Mestrado em Ensino da Educação Física nos Ensinos Básico e Secundário, da Universidade de Évora. Esta foi realizada na Escola Secundária Diogo Gouveia que se situa em Beja durante o ano letivo 2012/2013, tendo como objetivo vivenciar e executar uma aprendizagem aprofundada da vida de docente da disciplina de Educação física, realizando a função como professor estagiário. O presente relatório procura sintetizar todos os momentos vivenciados ao longo do estágio, um caminho reflexivo e de aprendizagem guiada. O documento encontra- se organizado em quatro grandes áreas de intervenção: i) enquadramento da prática de ensino supervisionada; ii) desenvolvimento do ensino- aprendizagem; iii) participação na escola e relação com a comunidade; iv) desenvolvimento profissional ao longo da vida. Para finalizar, apresento as considerações finais sobre todo este caminho percorrido ao longo desta prática de ensino supervisionada; Report of Supervised Teaching Practice at Diogo de Gouveia Secundary School, in Beja Abstract: This internship final report is part of the Supervised Teaching Practice course of the Master Degree in Physical Education Teaching at Basic and Secondary Education’s, Évora University. This practice was held at Diogo Gouveia’s High School, Beja, along the school year of 2012/2013, aiming to experience and execute a deep learning of a teaching life of the Physical Education discipline, performing the function of trainee teacher in order to put into practice the acquired knowledge during the academic path. This report seeks to synthesize all the experienced moments along the internship, a reflexive path of guided learning. This document is organized according to four major intervention areas: i) Supervised teaching practice’s environment; ii) Teaching-learning development: iii) Participating in school and relationship with the community; iv) Professional development throughout life. O movimento maker no DF e a atuação do bibliotecário : estudo de caso na Casa Thomas Jefferson

Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (graduação)—Universidade de Brasília, Faculdade de Ciência da Informação, Curso de Graduação em Biblioteconomia, 2019.O presente trabalho discute as possibilidades que o movimento maker traz à profissão do bibliotecário, nesse intento, colocando em análise aspectos fundamentais que mediante pontos levantados no referencial teórico e entrevista realizada, percorrem assuntos como a formação deste profissional em virtude da alta imersão tecnológica que a sociedade se encontra. Este é um fator que indubitavelmente impacta reflexões a respeito do futuro da profissão, portanto, esta monografia tem por objetivo compreender a partir de estudo de caso realizado com o bibliotecário acolhido na pesquisa e atuante no determinado espaço maker, um espectro que demonstre qual realidade é encontrada por esse profissional, apropriadamente, alicerçado pelo caminho que percorreu da graduação em Biblioteconomia a atual ocupação no makerspace. Foi utilizado dentro da metodologia de pesquisa o recurso de entrevista, sendo o mesmo conteúdo encaminhado anteriormente por e-mail na espécie de roteiro de perguntas a cada um dos dois profissionais, a priori, selecionados, uma vez que apenas um estabeleceu retorno. Segundo o levantamento bibliográfico, foi realizado investigação em fontes diversas de informação, como trabalhos acadêmicos e matérias especializadas na área. Em razão dos resultados, o trabalho apresentou um panorama ponderado, contudo, prestativo no que pretendeu expor sobre o tema, além de também ter sido atentamente investigado em conformidade aos desdobramentos tecnológicos, sociais e educativos. Acredita-se que embora possam haver déficits na graduação do curso de Biblioteconomia, segundo a análise dos dados, especialmente quando nos referimos a esse profissional sendo capaz de atender adequadamente aos anseios renovadores da sociedade, conclui-se que as soluções pensadas em respeito a problemática do tema, não concerne apenas em haver ferramentas de trabalho inovadoras, espaços altamente preparados, mas sim, a necessidade de o indivíduo internalizar a mentalidade do aprender como ato contínuo e agregador, dessa forma, tornando a tecnologia peça fundamental ao exercício da profissão e, ao mesmo tempo, acrescendo o reconhecimento à importância do material humano como figura que se desenvolve e evolui em harmonia a essas novas e frequentes nuanças sociais.The present work discusses the possibilities that the movement maker brings to the profession of the librarian, in this attempt, analyzing fundamental aspects that through points raised in the theoretical reference and realized interview, subjects such as the formation of this professional due to the high technological immersion that the society finds. This is a factor that undoubtedly impacts reflections about the future of the profession, therefore, this monograph aims to understand from a case study carried out with the librarian hosted in the research and acting in the determined makerspace, a spectrum that demonstrates what reality is found by this professional, appropriately, based on the path that ran from the graduation in Librarianship to the current occupation in the makerspace. It was used within the research methodology the interview resource, being the same content sent previously by e-mail in the kind of script of questions to each of the two professionals, since only one established return. According to the bibliographical survey, research was carried out in diverse sources of information, such as academic papers and specialized subjects in the area. Due to the results, the work presented a weighted overview, nevertheless, helpful in what it intended to expose on the subject, besides being also closely investigated in accordance with the technological, social and educational developments. It is believed that although there may be deficits in the undergraduate degree in Librarianship, according to the analysis of the data, especially when we refer to this professional being able to adequately meet the renewal aspirations of society, it is concluded that the solutions thought in respect to the problem of the subject, not only concern innovative work tools, highly prepared spaces, but rather the need for the individual to internalize the mentality of learning as a continuous and aggregating act, thus making technology a fundamental part of the practice of the profession and, at the same time, recognition of the importance of human material as a figure that develops and evolves in harmony with these new and frequent social nuances

FORS2/VLT survey of Milky Way globular clusters I. Description of the method for derivation of metal abundances in the optical and application to NGC 6528, NGC 6553, M 71, NGC 6558, NGC 6426 and Terzan 8

(abridged) We have observed almost 1/3 of the globular clusters in the Milky Way, targeting distant and/or highly reddened objects, besides a few reference clusters. A large sample of red giant stars was observed with FORS2@VLT/ESO at R ~ 2,000. The method for derivation of stellar parameters is presented with application to six reference clusters. We aim at deriving the stellar parameters effective temperature, gravity, metallicity and alpha-element enhancement, as well as radial velocity, for membership confirmation of individual stars in each cluster. We analyse the spectra collected for the reference globular clusters NGC 6528, NGC 6553, M 71, NGC 6558, NGC 6426 and Terzan 8. They cover the full range of globular cluster metallicities, and are located in the bulge, disc and halo. Full spectrum fitting techniques are applied, by comparing each target spectrum with a stellar library in the optical region at 4560-5860 A. We employed the library of observed spectra MILES, and the synthetic library by Coelho et al. (2005). Validation of the method is achieved through recovery of the known atmospheric parameters for 49 well-studied stars that cover a wide range in the parameter space. We adopted as final stellar parameters (effective temperatures, gravities, metallicities) the average of results using MILES and Coelho et al. libraries. We identified 4 member stars in NGC 6528, 13 in NGC 6553, 10 in M 71, 5 in NGC 6558, 5 in NGC 6426 and 12 in Terzan 8. Radial velocities, Teff, log(g), [Fe/H] and alpha-element enhancements were derived. We derived abundances for NGC 6426 from spectroscopy for the first time. The method proved to be reliable for red giant stars observed with resolution R ~ 2,000, yielding results compatible with high-resolution spectroscopy. The derived alpha-element abundances show [A/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] consistent with that of field stars at the same metallicities.Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, accepted for publication in A&

Dieta mediterrânica, estabilidade genómica e variação genética

Pelo facto de ser uma dieta muito rica em nutrientes essenciais e substâncias com atividade antioxidante e anti-inflamatória, ela tem sido implicada na manutenção da estabilidade genómica, incluindo o DNA telomérico. A disfunção telomérica tem sido associada à senescência celular, apoptose e cancro. Por isso, a investigação da interação dieta-telómero é relevante para uma melhor compreensão do papel da nutrição na prevenção de doenças crónicas caracterizadas por envelhecimento precoce e instabilidade genómica/disfunção telomérica. Este trabalho de revisão bibliográfica descreve os principais avanços científicos e tecnológicos que estiveram na génese da genómica nutricional. Adicionalmente, ele analisa o papel da dieta Mediterrânica para a manutenção da estabilidade genómica e integridade telomérica, bem como o impacto de variações genéticas humanas específicas na relação nutriente-genoma, especialmente a nível do DNA telomérico. Tratando-se de uma área emergente da genómica nutricional, a continuidade da investigação será fundamental para possibilitar, no futuro, a integração do conhecimento técnico-científico na prática clínica e aconselhamento nutricional.The Mediterranean diet is one of the healthiest food standards of the world. Because of the abundance in essential nutrients and substances with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, it has been implicated in the maintenance of genomic stability, including telomeric DNA. Telomeric dysfunction has been associated with cell senescence, apoptosis and cancer. Therefore, the research on diet-telomere interaction is relevant for a better understanding of the role of nutrition in the prevention of chronic diseases characterised by premature aging and genomic instability/telomeric dysfunction. In the present work, major technological and scientific advances that led to the development of the Nutritional Genomics field are reviewed. Additionally, the role of the Mediterranean diet on genomic stability/telomere integrity and the modulation of nutrient-genome (mainly telomeric DNA) by specific human genetic variations are analysed. As this is an emergent area of nutritional genomics, ongoing research is crucial to enable, in the future, the integration of technical and scientific knowledge into clinical practice and nutritional counselling.N/
