Rotational Diffusion in a Chain of Particles
We study the coupled rotational diffusion in a two-particle chain on the
basis of a Smoluchowski equation and calculate time-correlation functions that
are measurable in an experiment. This might be used to explore hydrodynamic
interactions in the limit where lubrication theory is valid.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, to be published in J. Phys.: Condens. Matte
A district-wide strategic approach of integrated social planning offers numerous advantages - both for the district as well as for the municipalities in the district. As a management tool, integrated social planning enables a detailed analysis of the social situation of the population. This forms the basis of which the needs can be determined, and the necessary social offers and services can be planned and implemented precisely, efficiently and effectively. In this study, two districts were scientifically monitored in the introduction of integrated social planning. The surveys (expert interviews, group discussions, document analyses) involved over 40 experts whose respective perspectives on the local social planning process were analysed. This provides a comprehensive picture of the individual aspects of social planning in districts as well as the associated challenges and solutions
Critical behavior of the (2+1)-dimensional Thirring model
We investigate chiral symmetry breaking in the (2+1)-dimensional Thirring
model as a function of the coupling as well as the Dirac flavor number Nf with
the aid of the functional renormalization group. For small enough flavor number
Nf < Nfc, the model exhibits a chiral quantum phase transition for sufficiently
large coupling. We compute the critical exponents of this second order
transition as well as the fermionic and bosonic mass spectrum inside the broken
phase within a next-to-leading order derivative expansion. We also determine
the quantum critical behavior of the many-flavor transition which arises due to
a competition between vector and chiral-scalar channel and which is of second
order as well. Due to the problem of competing channels, our results rely
crucially on the RG technique of dynamical bosonization. For the critical
flavor number, we find Nfc ~ 5.1 with an estimated systematic error of
approximately one flavor.Comment: 28 pages, 14 figure
Flow equation for Halpern-Huang directions of scalar O(N) models
A class of asymptotically free scalar theories with O(N) symmetry, defined
via the eigenpotentials of the Gaussian fixed point (Halpern-Huang directions),
are investigated using renormalization group flow equations. Explicit solutions
for the form of the potential in the nonperturbative infrared domain are found
in the large-N limit. In this limit, potentials without symmetry breaking
essentially preserve their shape and undergo a mass renormalization which is
governed only by the renormalization group distance parameter; as a
consequence, these scalar theories do not have a problem of naturalness.
Symmetry-breaking potentials are found to be ``fine-tuned'' in the large-N
limit in the sense that the nontrivial minimum vanishes exactly in the limit of
vanishing infrared cutoff: therefore, the O(N) symmetry is restored in the
quantum theory and the potential becomes flat near the origin.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, LaTeX, references added, presentation improved,

Evidence for two populations of Galactic globular clusters from the ratio of their half-mass to Jacobi radii
We investigate the ratio between the half-mass radii r_h of Galactic globular
clusters and their Jacobi radii r_J given by the potential of the Milky Way and
show that clusters with galactocentric distances R_{GC}>8 kpc fall into two
distinct groups: one group of compact, tidally-underfilling clusters with
r_h/r_J<0.05 and another group of tidally filling clusters which have 0.1 <
r_h/r_J<0.3. We find no correlation between the membership of a particular
cluster to one of these groups and its membership in the old or younger halo
population. Based on the relaxation times and orbits of the clusters, we argue
that compact clusters and most clusters in the inner Milky Way were born
compact with half-mass radii r_h < 1 pc. Some of the tidally-filling clusters
might have formed compact as well, but the majority likely formed with large
half-mass radii. Galactic globular clusters therefore show a similar dichotomy
as was recently found for globular clusters in dwarf galaxies and for young
star clusters in the Milky Way. It seems likely that some of the
tidally-filling clusters are evolving along the main sequence line of clusters
recently discovered by Kuepper et al. (2008) and are in the process of
dissolution.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, MNRAS in pres
Globular cluster systems in nearby dwarf galaxies - II. Nuclear star clusters and their relation to massive Galactic globular clusters
(Abridged) Using luminosities and structural parameters of globular clusters
(GCs) in the nuclear regions (nGCs) of low-mass dwarf galaxies from HST/ACS
imaging we derive the present-day escape velocities (v_esc) of stellar ejecta
to reach the cluster tidal radius and compare them with those of Galactic GCs
with extended (hot) horizontal branches (EHBs-GCs). For EHB-GCs, we find a
correlation between the present-day v_esc and their metallicity as well as
(V-I)_0 colour. The similar v_esc, (V-I)_0 distribution of nGCs and EHB-GCs
implies that nGCs could also have complex stellar populations. The v_esc-[Fe/H]
relation could reflect the known relation of increasing stellar wind velocity
with metallicity, which in turn could explain why more metal-poor clusters
typically show more peculiarities in their stellar population than more
metal-rich clusters of the same mass do. Thus the cluster v_esc can be used as
parameter to describe the degree of self-enrichment. The nGCs populate the same
Mv vs. rh region as EHB-GCs, although they do not reach the sizes of the
largest EHB-GCs like wCen and NGC 2419. We argue that during accretion the rh
of an nGC could increase due to significant mass loss in the cluster vicinity
and the resulting drop in the external potential in the core once the dwarf
galaxy dissolves. Our results support the scenario in which Galactic EHB-GCs
have originated in the centres of pre-Galactic building blocks or dwarf
galaxies that were later accreted by the Milky Way.Comment: MNRAS accepted, 12 pages, 6 figures, 4 Tables (3 & 4 available by

Asymptotic safety of simple Yukawa systems
We study the triviality and hierarchy problem of a Z_2-invariant Yukawa
system with massless fermions and a real scalar field, serving as a toy model
for the standard-model Higgs sector. Using the functional RG, we look for UV
stable fixed points which could render the system asymptotically safe. Whether
a balancing of fermionic and bosonic contributions in the RG flow induces such
a fixed point depends on the algebraic structure and the degrees of freedom of
the system. Within the region of parameter space which can be controlled by a
nonperturbative next-to-leading order derivative expansion of the effective
action, we find no non-Gaussian fixed point in the case of one or more fermion
flavors. The fermion-boson balancing can still be demonstrated within a model
system with a small fractional flavor number in the symmetry-broken regime. The
UV behavior of this small-N_f system is controlled by a conformal Higgs
expectation value. The system has only two physical parameters, implying that
the Higgs mass can be predicted. It also naturally explains the heavy mass of
the top quark, since there are no RG trajectories connecting the UV fixed point
with light top masses.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, v2: references added, typos corrected, minor
