    The Effect of Using Metacognitive Monitoring Strategy on Developing Reading Comprehension in English Language among Tenth Grade Students in North Eastern Badiah Directorate of Education

    This study aimed at exploring the effect of using metacognitive monitoring strategy on developing reading comprehension in English language among tenth grade students in North Eastern Badiah directorate of education. The study used the quasi experimental design.The sample of the study consisted of 123 male and female students who were purposefully chosen from the tenth grade students at Alkaum Alahmer comprehensive secondary school for girls, Alkaum Alahmer comprehensive secondary school for boys, Um Aljemal comprehensive secondary school for girls and Um Aljemal comprehensive secondary school for boys. The experimental and control groups were assigned randomly. The groups of the study were found equivalent upon analyzing students\u27 scores on reading comprehension test using 2-way ANCOVA. The experimental groups were instructed using metacognitive monitoring program whereas, students of the control group were taught in the conventional way. A jury of judges was invited to comment on the reading test and the instructional program to establish their validity. At the end of the program, the researcher administered the reading comprehension test. Means and standard deviation for students\u27 scores on the reading comprehension test were calculated. Then 2- way ANCOVA was calculated to examine the effect of the strategy. The findings of the study revealed that there were statistically significant differences at (α =0.05) between students\u27 total achievement of the experimental groups and the control groups in the reading comprehension in favor of the experimental group and that there was no interaction between the use of metacognitive monitoring strategy and gender on tenth grade students\u27 reading comprehension. In the light of the findings, the researcher suggested some recommendations to The Ministry of Education and TEFL educators

    An Efficient Scheme for Determining the Power Loss in Wind-PV Based on Deep Learning

    Power loss is a bottleneck in every power system and it has been in focus of majority of the researchers and industry. This paper proposes a new method for determining the power loss in wind-solar power system based on deep learning. The main idea of the proposed scheme is to freeze the feature extraction layer of the deep Boltzmann network and deploy deep learning training model as the source model. The sample data with closer distribution with the data under consideration is selected by defining the maximum mean discrepancy contribution coefficient. The power loss calculation model is developed by configuring the deep neural network through the sample data. The deep learning model is deployed to simulate the non-linear mapping relationship between the load data, power supply data, bus voltage data and the grid loss rate during power grid operation. The proposed algorithm is applied to an actual power grid to evaluate its effectiveness. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm effectively improved the system performance in terms of accuracy, fault tolerance, nonlinear fitting and timeliness as compared with existing schemes.publishedVersio

    Inactive matrix gla protein plasma levels are associated with peripheral neuropathy in Type 2 diabetes.

    AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is a frequent and severe complication of diabetes. As Matrix-gla-protein (MGP) is expressed in several components of the nervous system and is involved in some neurological disease, MGP could play a role in peripheral nervous system homeostasis. The aim of this study was to evaluate factors associated with sensitive diabetic neuropathy in Type 2 Diabetes, and, in particular, dephospho-uncarboxylated MGP (dp-ucMGP), the inactive form of MGP. METHODS 198 patients with Type 2 Diabetes were included. Presence of sensitive diabetic neuropathy was defined by a neuropathy disability score (NDS) ≥6. Plasma levels of dp-ucMGP were measured by ELISA. RESULTS In this cohort, the mean age was 64+/-8.4 years old, and 80% of patients were men. Peripheral neuropathy was present in 15.7% of the patients and was significantly associated (r = 0.51, p<0.0001) with dp-ucMGP levels (β = -0.26, p = 0.045) after integrating effects of height (β = -0.38, p = 0.01), insulin treatment (β = 0.42, p = 0.002), retinopathy treated by laser (β = 0.26, p = 0.02), and total cholesterol levels (β = 0.3, p = 0.03) by multivariable analysis. CONCLUSIONS The association between diabetic neuropathy and the inactive form of MGP suggests the existence of new pathophysiological pathways to explore. Further studies are needed to determine if dp-ucMGP may be used as a biomarker of sensitive neuropathy. Since dp-ucMGP is a marker of poor vitamin K status, clinical studies are warranted to explore the potential protective effect of high vitamin K intake on diabetic peripheral neuropathy

    Monitoring of Dead Sea water surface variation using multi-temporal satellite data and GIS.

    Remote sensing (RS) and geographic information systems (GIS) are very useful for environmental-related studies, particularly in the field of surface water studies such as monitoring of lakes. The Dead Sea is exposed to very high evaporating process with considerable scarcity of water sources, thus leading to a remarkable shrinkage in its water surface area. The lake suffers from dry out due to the negative balance of water cycle during the previous four decades. This paper discusses the application of RS, GIS, and Global Positioning System to estimate the lowering and the shrinkage of Dead Sea water surface over the period 1810–2005. A set of multi-temporal remote sensing images were collected and processed to show the lakes aerial extend shrinkage from 1973 up to 2004. Remote sensing data were used to extract spatial information and to compute the surface areas for Dead Sea for various years. The current study aims at estimating the fluctuation of Dead Sea level over the study period with special emphasis on the environmental impact assessment that includes the degradation level of the Dead Sea. The results indicated that there is a decrease of 20 m in the level of the Dead Sea that has occurred during the study period. Further, the results showed that the water surface area of the Dead Sea has shrunk from 934.26 km2 in 1973 to 640.62 km2 in 2004

    An overview of the Jordanian oil shale: its chemical and geologic characteristics, exploration, reserves and feasibility for oil and cement production

    Abstract Oil shale is the most abundant fossil energy resource discovered in Jordan, ranking third after the USA and Brazil in terms of oil shale reserves. This asset is considered to be Jordan's most extensive domestic fossil-fuel source. The identified reserves of this oil shale are huge and sufficient to satisfy the national energy needs for hundreds of years. Numerous geologic studies have shown that the country contains several oil shale deposits. These deposits are regarded as the richest in organic bituminous marl and limestone that occur at shallow depth. Jordanian oil shale is generally of a good quality, with relatively low ash and moisture contents, a gross calorific value of 7.5 MJ/kg, and an oil yield of 8 to 12%. The spent shale has residual carbon content that may be burned to produce further energy, and ash that can be used for cement and building materials. The current study summarizes the results of the former feasibility studies and discuses the scope of future usage of Jordanian oil shale. The value of this oil shale and its associated products is highlighted herein

    Association between metformin use and below-the-knee arterial calcification score in type 2 diabetic patients.

    BACKGROUND Vascular calcification (VC) is common in type 2 diabetes, and is associated with cardiovascular complications. Recent preclinical data suggest that metformin inhibits VC both in vitro and in animal models. However, metformin's effects in patients with diabetic VC have not previously been characterized. The present study investigated the association between metformin use and lower-limb arterial calcification in patients with type 2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk. METHODS The DIACART cross-sectional cohort study included 198 patients with type 2 diabetes but without severe chronic kidney disease. Below-the-knee calcification scores were assessed by computed tomography and supplemented by colour duplex ultrasonography. Data on anti-diabetic drugs were carefully collected from the patients' medical records and during patient interviews. Biochemical and clinical data were studied as potential confounding factors. RESULTS Metformin-treated patients had a significantly lower calcification score than metformin-free patients (mean ± standard deviation: 2033 ± 4514 and 4684 ± 9291, respectively; p = 0.01). A univariate analysis showed that metformin was associated with a significantly lower prevalence of severe below-the-knee arterial calcification (p = 0.02). VC was not significantly associated with the use of other antidiabetic drugs, including sulfonylureas, insulin, gliptin, and glucagon like peptide-1 analogues. A multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that the association between metformin use and calcification score (odds ratio [95% confidence interval] = 0.33 [0.11-0.98]; p = 0.045) was independent of age, gender, tobacco use, renal function, previous cardiovascular disease, diabetes duration, neuropathy, retinopathy, HbA1c levels, and inflammation. CONCLUSIONS In patients with type 2 diabetes, metformin use was independently associated with a lower below-the-knee arterial calcification score. This association may contribute to metformin's well-known vascular protective effect. Further prospective investigations of metformin's potential ability to inhibit VC in patients with and without type 2 diabetes are now needed to confirm these results

    Global, regional, and national sex-specific burden and control of the HIV epidemic, 1990-2019, for 204 countries and territories: the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019

    Background: The sustainable development goals (SDGs) aim to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Understanding the current state of the HIV epidemic and its change over time is essential to this effort. This study assesses the current sex-specific HIV burden in 204 countries and territories and measures progress in the control of the epidemic. Methods: To estimate age-specific and sex-specific trends in 48 of 204 countries, we extended the Estimation and Projection Package Age-Sex Model to also implement the spectrum paediatric model. We used this model in cases where age and sex specific HIV-seroprevalence surveys and antenatal care-clinic sentinel surveillance data were available. For the remaining 156 of 204 locations, we developed a cohort-incidence bias adjustment to derive incidence as a function of cause-of-death data from vital registration systems. The incidence was input to a custom Spectrum model. To assess progress, we measured the percentage change in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 (threshold >75% decline), the ratio of incident cases to number of people living with HIV (incidence-to-prevalence ratio threshold <0·03), and the ratio of incident cases to deaths (incidence-to-mortality ratio threshold <1·0). Findings: In 2019, there were 36·8 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 35·1–38·9) people living with HIV worldwide. There were 0·84 males (95% UI 0·78–0·91) per female living with HIV in 2019, 0·99 male infections (0·91–1·10) for every female infection, and 1·02 male deaths (0·95–1·10) per female death. Global progress in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 was driven by sub-Saharan Africa (with a 28·52% decrease in incident cases, 95% UI 19·58–35·43, and a 39·66% decrease in deaths, 36·49–42·36). Elsewhere, the incidence remained stable or increased, whereas deaths generally decreased. In 2019, the global incidence-to-prevalence ratio was 0·05 (95% UI 0·05–0·06) and the global incidence-to-mortality ratio was 1·94 (1·76–2·12). No regions met suggested thresholds for progress. Interpretation: Sub-Saharan Africa had both the highest HIV burden and the greatest progress between 1990 and 2019. The number of incident cases and deaths in males and females approached parity in 2019, although there remained more females with HIV than males with HIV. Globally, the HIV epidemic is far from the UNAIDS benchmarks on progress metrics.
