Extending Hybrid CSP with Probability and Stochasticity

Probabilistic and stochastic behavior are omnipresent in computer controlled systems, in particular, so-called safety-critical hybrid systems, because of fundamental properties of nature, uncertain environments, or simplifications to overcome complexity. Tightly intertwining discrete, continuous and stochastic dynamics complicates modelling, analysis and verification of stochastic hybrid systems (SHSs). In the literature, this issue has been extensively investigated, but unfortunately it still remains challenging as no promising general solutions are available yet. In this paper, we give our effort by proposing a general compositional approach for modelling and verification of SHSs. First, we extend Hybrid CSP (HCSP), a very expressive and process algebra-like formal modeling language for hybrid systems, by introducing probability and stochasticity to model SHSs, which is called stochastic HCSP (SHCSP). To this end, ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are generalized by stochastic differential equations (SDEs) and non-deterministic choice is replaced by probabilistic choice. Then, we extend Hybrid Hoare Logic (HHL) to specify and reason about SHCSP processes. We demonstrate our approach by an example from real-world.Comment: The conference version of this paper is accepted by SETTA 201

Petrogenetic significance of chromian spinels from the Sudbury Igneous Complex, Ontario, Canada

Chromian spinels occur in mafic-ultramafic inclusions in the Sublayer of the Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC) as well as in mafic-ultramafic rocks in the immediate footwall of the Sublayer. The host rocks are pyroxenite and melanorite with minor dunite, harzburgite, and melatroctolite. As common accessory phases in these rocks, the chromian spinels display euhedral or subhedral forms and are included in olivine and orthopyroxene. Chromian spinel grains generally have ilmenite lamellae and contain abundant inclusions (zircon, olivine, diopside, plagioclase, biotite, and sulfide). All the chromian spinels have similar trace element abundances and are rich in TiO2 (0.5-15 wt.%). They have constant Cr# (100Cr/(Cr + Al)) (55-70) and exhibit a continuum in composition that traverses the normal fields of spinels in a Al-(Fe3+ + 2Ti)-Cr triangular diagram. This continuum extends to that of the composition of chromian magnetite in the host norite matrix to the mafic -ultramafic inclusions. This continuum in composition of the spinels suggests that the noritic matrix to the Sublayer formed from the same magma as the inclusions. A positive correlation between the Cr and Al contents of the spinels was probably produced by dilution of these elements by Fe3+ contributed, perhaps, by a plagioclase-saturated melt. Zircon inclusions in a chromian spinel grain reflect incorporation of crustal, felsic materials into the magma before crystallization of chromian spinel. The chemical characteristics and mineral inclusions of the spinels suggest that the Sublayer formed in response to magma mixing. It is suggested that subsequent to the formation of the crustal melt, mantle-derived high-Mg magmas mixed vigourously with this and generated the magmatic sulfides that eventually formed the Ni - Cu - platinum-group elements sulfide ore deposits. Some of the early crystallization products of the high-Mg magma settled to the chamber floor, where they partially mixed with the crustal melt and formed the mafic - ultramafic inclusions and footwall complexes.published_or_final_versio

A Self-Reference False Memory Effect in the DRM Paradigm: Evidence from Eastern and Western Samples

It is well established that processing information in relation to oneself (i.e., selfreferencing) leads to better memory for that information than processing that same information in relation to others (i.e., other-referencing). However, it is unknown whether self-referencing also leads to more false memories than other-referencing. In the current two experiments with European and East Asian samples, we presented participants the Deese-Roediger/McDermott (DRM) lists together with their own name or other people’s name (i.e., “Trump” in Experiment 1 and “Li Ming” in Experiment 2). We found consistent results across the two experiments; that is, in the self-reference condition, participants had higher true and false memory rates compared to those in the other-reference condition. Moreover, we found that selfreferencing did not exhibit superior mnemonic advantage in terms of net accuracy compared to other-referencing and neutral conditions. These findings are discussed in terms of theoretical frameworks such as spreading activation theories and the fuzzytrace theory. We propose that our results reflect the adaptive nature of memory in the sense that cognitive processes that increase mnemonic efficiency may also increase susceptibility to associative false memories

Effects of acute fatigue on the volitional and magnetically-evoked electromechanical delay of the knee flexors in males and females

Neuromuscular performance capabilities, including those measured by evoked responses, may be adversely affected by fatigue; however, the capability of the neuromuscular system to initiate muscle force rapidly under these circumstances is yet to be established. Sex-differences in the acute responses of neuromuscular performance to exercise stress may be linked to evidence that females are much more vulnerable to ACL injury than males. Optimal functioning of the knee flexors is paramount to the dynamic stabilisation of the knee joint, therefore the aim of this investigation was to examine the effects of acute maximal intensity fatiguing exercise on the voluntary and magnetically-evoked electromechanical delay in the knee flexors of males and females. Knee flexor volitional and magnetically-evoked neuromuscular performance was assessed in seven male and nine females prior to and immediately after: (i) an intervention condition comprising a fatigue trial of 30-seconds maximal static exercise of the knee flexors, (ii) a control condition consisting of no exercise. The results showed that the fatigue intervention was associated with a substantive reduction in volitional peak force (PFV) that was greater in males compared to females (15.0%, 10.2%, respectively, p < 0.01) and impairment to volitional electromechanical delay (EMDV) in females exclusively (19.3%, p < 0.05). Similar improvements in magnetically-evoked electromechanical delay in males and females following fatigue (21%, p < 0.001), however, may suggest a vital facilitatory mechanism to overcome the effects of impaired voluntary capabilities, and a faster neuromuscular response that can be deployed during critical times to protect the joint system

Transgenic plant-derived siRNAs can suppress propagation of influenza virus in mammalian cells

As an example of the cost-effective large-scale generation of small-interfering RNA (siRNAs), we have created transgenic tobacco plants that produce siRNAs targeted to the mRNA of the non-structural protein NS1 from the influenza A virus subtype H1N1. We have investigated if these siRNAs, specifically targeted to the 5 ′-portion of the NS1 transcripts (5mNS1), would suppress viral propagation in mammalian cells. Agroinfiltration of transgenic tobacco with an Agrobacterium strain harboring a 5mNS1-expressing binary vector caused a reduction in 5mNS1 transcripts in the siRNA-accumulating transgenic plants. Further, H1N1 infection of siRNA-transfected mammalian cells resulted in significant suppression of viral replication. These results demonstrate that plant-derived siRNAs can inhibit viral propagation through RNA interference and could potentially be applied in control of viral-borne diseases. © 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V. on behalf of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies.postprin

Emergence of scale-free leadership structure in social recommender systems

    Get PDF
The study of the organization of social networks is important for understanding of opinion formation, rumor spreading, and the emergence of trends and fashion. This paper reports empirical analysis of networks extracted from four leading sites with social functionality (Delicious, Flickr, Twitter and YouTube) and shows that they all display a scale-free leadership structure. To reproduce this feature, we propose an adaptive network model driven by social recommending. Artificial agent-based simulations of this model highlight a "good get richer" mechanism where users with broad interests and good judgments are likely to become popular leaders for the others. Simulations also indicate that the studied social recommendation mechanism can gradually improve the user experience by adapting to tastes of its users. Finally we outline implications for real online resource-sharing systems

MiR-637 maintains the balance between adipocytes and osteoblasts by directly targeting Osterix

Bone development is dynamically regulated by homeostasis, in which a balance between adipocytes and osteoblasts is maintained. Disruption of this differentiation balance leads to various bone-related metabolic diseases, including osteoporosis. In the present study, a primate-specific microRNA (miR-637) was found to be involved in the differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). Our preliminary data indicated that miR-637 suppressed the growth of hMSCs and induced S-phase arrest. Expression of miR-637 was increased during adipocyte differentiation (AD), whereas it was decreased during osteoblast differentiation (OS), which suggests miR-637 could act as a mediator of adipoosteogenic differentiation. Osterix (Osx), a significant transcription factor of osteoblasts, was shown to be a direct target of miR-637, which significantly enhanced AD and suppressed OS in hMSCs through direct suppression of Osx expression. Furthermore, miR-637 also significantly enhanced de novo adipogenesis in nude mice. In conclusion, our data indicated that the expression of miR-637 was indispensable for maintaining the balance of adipocytes and osteoblasts. Disruption of miR-637 expression patterns leads to irreversible damage to the balance of differentiation in bone marrow. © 2011 Zhang et al.published_or_final_versio
