On Adaptive Emergence of Trust Behavior in the Game of Stag Hunt

    Get PDF
We study the emergence of trust behavior at both the individual and the population levels. At the individual level, in contrast to prior research that views trust as fixed traits, we model the emergence of trust or cooperation as a result of trial and error learning by a computer algorithm borrowed from the field of artificial intelligence (Watkins 1989). We show that trust can indeed arise as a result of trial and error learning. Emergence of trust at the population level is modeled by a grid-world consisting of cells of individual agents, a technique known as spatialization in evolutionary game theory. We show that, under a wide range of assumptions, trusting individuals tend to take over the population and trust becomes a systematic property. At both individual and population levels, therefore, we argue that trust behaviors will often emerge as a result of learning

Analysis and evaluation of rice grain quality in Indica rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Rice quality is a comprehensive quantitative trait greatly influenced by heredity and environment. Here, 11 rice quality traits and Rapid Visco-Analyser (RVA) profiles of 30 indica rice germplasms were detected and analyzed. In addition, we used grain size genes and starch synthesis gene Wx to detect the rice quality genotypes of rice. The results showed different degrees of correlation among rice quality traits. In addition, principal component analysis (PCA) divided rice quality traits into four principal components, and the cumulative contribution rate reached 82.478%. Cluster analysis divided 30 rice varieties into five categories. The first four types had better rice quality. Identification of rice quality genes indicated that most of the genotypes were GS3, GS9, GW5, GW8 and Wxb, and a few were GW7 and Wxa. Identifying rice quality characteristics and genotypes of rice varieties may lay a theoretical foundation for promoting the cultivation of new rice varieties, enabling breeders andresearchers to develop better rice varieties

Astilbin Inhibits High Glucose-Induced Inflammation and Extracellular Matrix Accumulation by Suppressing the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB Pathway in Rat Glomerular Mesangial Cells

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is characterized by inflammatory responses and extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation. Astilbin is an active natural compound and possesses anti-inflammatory activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of astilbin on high glucose (HG)-induced glomerular mesangial cells and the potential mechanisms. The results showed that HG induced cell proliferation of HBZY-1 cells in a time-dependent manner, and astilbin inhibited HG-induced cell proliferation. The expression and secretion of inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and ECM components, including collagen IV (Col IV) and fibronectin (FN), were induced by HG. Moreover, TGF-β1 and CTGF were also induced by HG. The induction by HG on inflammatory response and ECM accumulation was inhibited after astilbin treatment. Astilbin treatment also attenuated HG-induced decrease in expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and MMP-9. The TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB pathway was activated by HG, and the inhibitor of TLR4 exhibited the same effect to astilbin on reversing the induction of HG. TLR4 overexpression attenuated the effect of astilbin on HG-induced inflammatory cytokine production and ECM accumulation. The results suggested that astilbin attenuated inflammation and ECM accumulation in HG-induced rat glomerular mesangial cells via inhibiting the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB pathway. This work provided evidence that astilbin can be considered as a potential candidate for DN therapy

Spin Gap and Resonance at the Nesting Wavevector in Superconducting FeSe0.4Te0.6

Neutron scattering is used to probe magnetic excitations in FeSe_{0.4}Te_{0.6} (T_c=14 K). Low energy spin fluctuations are found with a characteristic wave vector (0.5,0.5,L)(0.5,0.5,L) that corresponds to Fermi surface nesting and differs from Q_m=(\delta,0,0.5) for magnetic ordering in Fe_{1+y}Te. A spin resonance with \hbar\Omega_0=6.5 meV \approx 5.3 k_BT_c and \hbar\Gamma=1.25 meV develops in the superconducting state from a normal state continuum. We show that the resonance is consistent with a bound state associated with s+/- superconductivity and imperfect quasi-2D Fermi surface nesting.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Submitted to Phys. Rev. Purpose: To compare the effects of raw hawthorn (RH) and charred hawthorn (CH) on functional dyspepsia (FD) and intestinal flora (IF).Methods: A rat model of FD was established through use of a chronic stimulator. Rat models were evaluated by the rat’s physical state, body weight, diet, and histopathological examination. After RH or CH administration, the digestive function of the rats was evaluated by determining gastric emptying and intestinal propulsion rate, diversity of intestinal flora. Results: RH and CH both improved gastric emptying and intestinal propulsion rate in FD group when compared to control group (p < 0.05). CH yielded higher treatment effectiveness than RH. Sixteen phyla of microbiomes were recognized from all samples. After FD model establishment, the relative abundance of Lactobacillus, Lachnospiraceae and Bacteroidales decreased compared to normal control rats. On the other hand, the relative abundance of Helicobacter and Bacteroides in the model control group increased compared to normal control. After RH and CH treatment, the relative abundance of all dysregulated phyla was restored to varying degrees, but the levels after CH treatment were similar to those of the normal control group. Conclusion: The relative abundance of intestinal flora of FD model rats is significantly different from that of rats in normal control group. Thus, RH and CH intervention improves digestive function, and the mechanisms may be related to adjustment of gut dysbacteriosis. Keywords: Raw Hawthorn, Charred Hawthorn, Functional dyspepsia, Intestinal flor

Effect of Hydrothermal Treatment Temperature on the Properties of Sewage Sludge Derived Solid Fuel

High moisture content along with poor dewaterability are the main challenges for sewage sludge treatment and utilization. In this study, the effect of hydrothermal treatment at various temperature (120-200 ËšC) on the properties of sewage sludge derived solid fuel was investigated in the terms of mechanical dewatering character, drying character, calorific value and heavy metal distribution. Hydrothermal treatment (HT) followed by dewatering process significantly reduced moisture content and improved calorific value of sewage sludge with the optimum condition obtained at 140ËšC. No significant alteration of drying characteristic was produced by HT. Heavy metal enrichment in solid particle was found after HT that highlighted the importance of further study regarding heavy metal behavior during combustion. However, it also implied the potential application of HT on sewage sludge for heavy metal removal from wastewater

Evolution of the Surface Structures on SrTiO3_3(110) Tuned by Ti or Sr Concentration

The surface structure of the SrTiO3_3(110) polar surface is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Monophased reconstructions in (5×\times1), (4×\times1), (2×\times8), and (6×\times8) are obtained, respectively, and the evolution between these phases can be tuned reversibly by adjusting the Ar+^{+} sputtering dose or the amount of Sr/Ti evaporation. Upon annealing, the surface reaches the thermodynamic equilibrium that is determined by the surface metal concentration. The different electronic structures and absorption behaviors of the surface with different reconstructions are investigated.Comment: 10 pages, 14 figure
