Microstructural defects in hot deformed and as-transformed τ-MnAl-C
In this study, detailed microstructural characterisation has been conducted in both as-transformed and hot deformed samples of τ-MnAl-C using transmission electron microscopy. After hot deformation, true twins, dislocations, intrinsic stacking faults and precipitates of Mn3AlC are the main defects in the recrystallised grains. True twins and order twins were distinguished based on differences in their diffraction patterns. A significant fraction of non-recrystallised grains existed, which had microstructures based on combinations of high densities of true twins, dislocations, and deformation bands. The formation of the Mn3AlC precipitates was confirmed and related to the reduction of saturation magnetization and the increase in the Curie temperature of τ-MnAl-C after hot deformation. Antiphase boundaries, which are believed to act as nucleation sites for reverse domains, were not observed in the hot deformed sample

An Asymmetric Cone Model for Halo Coronal Mass Ejections
Due to projection effects, coronagraphic observations cannot uniquely
determine parameters relevant to the geoeffectiveness of CMEs, such as the true
propagation speed, width, or source location. The Cone Model for Coronal Mass
Ejections (CMEs) has been studied in this respect and it could be used to
obtain these parameters. There are evidences that some CMEs initiate from a
flux-rope topology. It seems that these CMEs should be elongated along the
flux-rope axis and the cross section of the cone base should be rather
elliptical than circular. In the present paper we applied an asymmetric cone
model to get the real space parameters of frontsided halo CMEs (HCMEs) recorded
by SOHO/LASCO coronagraphs in 2002. The cone model parameters are generated
through a fitting procedure to the projected speeds measured at different
position angles on the plane of the sky. We consider models with the apex of
the cone located at the center and surface of the Sun. The results are compared
to the standard symmetric cone model

Density functional study of Au (n=2-20) clusters: lowest-energy structures and electronic properties
We have investigated the lowest-energy structures and electronic properties
of the Au(n=2-20) clusters based on density functional theory (DFT) with
local density approximation. The small Au clusters adopt planar structures
up to n=6. Tabular cage structures are preferred in the range of n=10-14 and a
structural transition from tabular cage-like structure to compact
near-spherical structure is found around n=15. The most stable configurations
obtained for Au and Au clusters are amorphous instead of
icosahedral or fcc-like, while the electronic density of states sensitively
depend on the cluster geometry. Dramatic odd-even alternative behaviors are
obtained in the relative stability, HOMO-LUMO gaps and ionization potentials of
gold clusters. The size evolution of electronic properties is discussed and the
theoretical ionization potentials of Au clusters compare well with

Influence of Carbon Concentration on the Superconductivity in MgCxNi3
The influence of carbon concentration on the superconductivity (SC) in
MgCNi has been investigated by measuring the low temperature specific
heat combined with first principles electronic structure calculation. It is
found that the specific heat coefficient of the
superconducting sample () in normal state is twice that of the
non-superconducting one (). The comparison of measured
and the calculated electronic density of states (DOS) shows that the
effective mass renormalization changes remarkably as the carbon concentration
changes. The large mass renormalization for the superconducting sample and the
low (7K) indicate that more than one kind of boson mediated
electron-electron interactions exist in MgCNi.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Low-temperature electrical transport in bilayer manganite LaSrMnO
The temperature and magnetic field dependence of anisotropic in-plane
and out-of-plane resistivities have been investigated in
single crystals of the bilayer manganite LaSrMnO.
Below the Curie transition temperature 125 K, and
display almost the same temperature dependence with an up-turn around 50 K. In
the metallic regime (50 K 110 K), both and
follow a dependence, consistent with the two-magnon
scattering. We found that the value of the proportionality coefficient
and the ratio of the exchange interaction obtained
by fitting the data are in excellent agreement with the calculated
based on the two-magnon model and deduced from neutron scattering,
respectively. This provides further support for this scattering mechanism. At
even lower , in the non-metallic regime ( 50 K), {\it both} the in-plane
and out-of-plane conductivities obey a
dependence, consistent with weak localization effects. Hence, this demonstrates
the three-dimensional metallic nature of the bilayer manganite

Prediction Space Weather Using an Asymmetric Cone Model for Halo CMEs
Halo coronal mass ejections (HCMEs) are responsible of the most severe
geomagnetic storms. A prediction of their geoeffectiveness and travel time to
Earth's vicinity is crucial to forecast space weather.
Unfortunately coronagraphic observations are subjected to projection effects
and do not provide true characteristics of CMEs. Recently, Michalek (2006, {\it
Solar Phys.}, {\bf237}, 101) developed an asymmetric cone model to obtain the
space speed, width and source location of HCMEs. We applied this technique to
obtain the parameters of all front-sided HCMEs observed by the SOHO/LASCO
experiment during a period from the beginning of 2001 until the end of 2002
(solar cycle 23). These parameters were applied for the space weather forecast.
Our study determined that the space speeds are strongly correlated with the
travel times of HCMEs within Earth's vicinity and with the magnitudes related
to geomagnetic disturbances

Copyright @ 2013 Elsevier B.V.Increasing attention is being directed at the role played by anti-androgenic chemicals in endocrine disruption of wildlife within the aquatic environment. The co-occurrence of multiple contaminants with anti-androgenic activity highlights a need for the predictive assessment of combined effects, but information about anti-androgen mixture effects on wildlife is lacking. This study evaluated the suitability of the androgenised female stickleback screen (AFSS), in which inhibition of androgen-induced spiggin production provides a quantitative assessment of anti-androgenic activity, for predicting the effect of a four component mixture of anti-androgens. The anti-androgenic activity of four known anti-androgens (vinclozolin, fenitrothion, flutamide, linuron) was evaluated from individual concentration-response data and used to design a mixture containing each chemical at equipotent concentrations. Across a 100-fold concentration range, a concentration addition approach was used to predict the response of fish to the mixture. Two studies were conducted independently at each of two laboratories. By using a novel method to adjust for differences between nominal and measured concentrations, good agreement was obtained between the actual outcome of the mixture exposure and the predicted outcome. This demonstrated for the first time that androgen receptor antagonists act in concert in an additive fashion in fish and that existing mixture methodology is effective in predicting the outcome, based on concentration-response data for individual chemicals. The sensitivity range of the AFSS assay lies within the range of anti-androgenicity reported in rivers across many locations internationally. The approach taken in our study lays the foundations for understanding how androgen receptor antagonists work together in fish and is essential in informing risk assessment methods for complex anti-androgenic mixtures in the aquatic environment.European Commission and
