Resilience-enabling relationships of older adolescents

Get PDF
My study is a sub-study of the Resilient Youth in Stressed Environments (RYSE) Project (ethics clearance, UP17/05/01). RYSE aims to better understand the resilience of youth who live in environments that are stressed by the petrochemical industry and other related risks. In particular, the purpose of my study was to explore the relationships that enhance older adolescents’ resilience in the midst of the double risk posed by township residence and petrochemical pollution. I used phenomenology as my research design and a socio-constructivist epistemology as the paradigm for my study. My eight participants, who were purposively recruited because they were older (18 to 24 years) and hailed from eMbalenhle township, participated in a photo elicitation activity and a group interview. I deduced themes from the resulting data by applying the relational codes from the RYSE Canadian codebook. Family relationships (mostly with mother figures), relationships with reliable friends, and relationships with community members emerged as the main themes, while the relationship with God was an outlier theme. There was no evidence of online relationships, relationships with pets and animals, or relationships with mental health professionals in my data, but these relationships were indicated in the codebook. The themes that I deduced are useful to the resilience theory as they affirm that resilience is a contextual phenomenon. Therefore, sociocultural aspects should not be neglected when one seeks to understand this complex phenomenon.Mini Dissertation(MEd (Educational Psychology))--University of Pretoria 2020.Educational PsychologyMEd (Educational Psychology)Unrestricte

IntroductionThe emergence of cross-modal perception and deep learning technologies has had a profound impact on modern robotics. This study focuses on the application of these technologies in the field of robot control, specifically in the context of volleyball tasks. The primary objective is to achieve precise control of robots in volleyball tasks by effectively integrating information from different sensors using a cross-modal self-attention mechanism.MethodsOur approach involves the utilization of a cross-modal self-attention mechanism to integrate information from various sensors, providing robots with a more comprehensive scene perception in volleyball scenarios. To enhance the diversity and practicality of robot training, we employ Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to synthesize realistic volleyball scenarios. Furthermore, we leverage transfer learning to incorporate knowledge from other sports datasets, enriching the process of skill acquisition for robots.ResultsTo validate the feasibility of our approach, we conducted experiments where we simulated robot volleyball scenarios using multiple volleyball-related datasets. We measured various quantitative metrics, including accuracy, recall, precision, and F1 score. The experimental results indicate a significant enhancement in the performance of our approach in robot volleyball tasks.DiscussionThe outcomes of this study offer valuable insights into the application of multi-modal perception and deep learning in the field of sports robotics. By effectively integrating information from different sensors and incorporating synthetic data through GANs and transfer learning, our approach demonstrates improved robot performance in volleyball tasks. These findings not only advance the field of robotics but also open up new possibilities for human-robot collaboration in sports and athletic performance improvement. This research paves the way for further exploration of advanced technologies in sports robotics, benefiting both the scientific community and athletes seeking performance enhancement through robotic assistance

Effect of Reducing Atmosphere on the Magnetism of Zn1-xCoxO Nanoparticles

We report the crystal structure and magnetic properties of Zn1-xCoxO nanoparticles synthesized by heating metal acetates in organic solvent. The nanoparticles were crystallized in wurtzite ZnO structure after annealing in air and in a forming gas (Ar95%+H5%). The X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) data for different Co content show clear evidence for the Co+2 ions in tetrahedral symmetry, indicating the substitution of Co+2 in ZnO lattice. However samples with x=0.08 and higher cobalt content also indicate the presence of Co metal clusters. Only those samples annealed in the reducing atmosphere of the forming gas, and that showed the presence of oxygen vacancies, exhibited ferromagnetism at room temperature. The air annealed samples remained non-magnetic down to 77K. The essential ingredient in achieving room temperature ferromagnetism in these Zn1-xCoxO nanoparticles was found to be the presence of additional carriers generated by the presence of the oxygen vacancies.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Nanotechnology IO

Heat-induced temperature enhancement in the polar summer ionosphere

Observation data recorded by the European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association in Tromsø, Norway in August 2009 were analyzed to determine the heating effects in polar summer ionospheric modification experiments. There are two types of increases in electron temperature: large relative increases in a narrow range near 150 km and greater absolute increases in a wider range at 150–400 km. The percentage increase in temperature linearly increases with heating power, but the rate of increase decreases with increasing pump frequency. A clear two-dimensional distribution was found for the measurement made on August 15, and the heating effects are greater closer to the direction of the geomagnetic field. The heating effects obviously depend on the angle between the heating beam and geomagnetic field; as the angle increases, the heating effect decreases

The construction and the assembly of the two end-caps of the ATLAS liquid argon electromagnetic calorimeter as well as their test and qualification programs are described. The work described here started at the beginning of 2001 and lasted for approximately three years. The results of the qualification tests performed before installation in the LHC ATLAS pit are given. The detectors are now installed in the ATLAS cavern, full of liquid argon and being commissioned. The complete detectors coverage is powered with high voltage and readout

Study of e+eppˉe^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar{p} in the vicinity of ψ(3770)\psi(3770)

Using 2917 pb1\rm{pb}^{-1} of data accumulated at 3.773~GeV\rm{GeV}, 44.5~pb1\rm{pb}^{-1} of data accumulated at 3.65~GeV\rm{GeV} and data accumulated during a ψ(3770)\psi(3770) line-shape scan with the BESIII detector, the reaction e+eppˉe^+e^-\rightarrow p\bar{p} is studied considering a possible interference between resonant and continuum amplitudes. The cross section of e+eψ(3770)ppˉe^+e^-\rightarrow\psi(3770)\rightarrow p\bar{p}, σ(e+eψ(3770)ppˉ)\sigma(e^+e^-\rightarrow\psi(3770)\rightarrow p\bar{p}), is found to have two solutions, determined to be (0.059±0.032±0.0120.059\pm0.032\pm0.012) pb with the phase angle ϕ=(255.8±37.9±4.8)\phi = (255.8\pm37.9\pm4.8)^\circ (<<0.11 pb at the 90% confidence level), or σ(e+eψ(3770)ppˉ)=(2.57±0.12±0.12\sigma(e^+e^-\rightarrow\psi(3770)\rightarrow p\bar{p}) = (2.57\pm0.12\pm0.12) pb with ϕ=(266.9±6.1±0.9)\phi = (266.9\pm6.1\pm0.9)^\circ both of which agree with a destructive interference. Using the obtained cross section of ψ(3770)ppˉ\psi(3770)\rightarrow p\bar{p}, the cross section of ppˉψ(3770)p\bar{p}\rightarrow \psi(3770), which is useful information for the future PANDA experiment, is estimated to be either (9.8±5.79.8\pm5.7) nb (<17.2<17.2 nb at 90% C.L.) or (425.6±42.9)(425.6\pm42.9) nb

Xiuzhen (Immortality Cultivation) Fantasy: Science, Religion, and the Novels of Magic/Superstition in Contemporary China

In early twenty-first-century China, online fantasy is one of the most popular literary genres. This article studies a subgenre of Chinese fantasy named xiuzhen 修真 (immortality cultivation), which draws on Daoist alchemy in particular and Chinese religion and culture in general, especially that which was negatively labelled “superstitious” in the twentieth century, to tell exciting adventure stories. Xiuzhen fantasy is indebted to wuxia xiaoshuo 武俠小說 (martial arts novels), the first emergence of Chinese fantasy in the early twentieth century after the translation of the modern Western discourses of science, religion, and superstition. Although martial arts fiction was suppressed by the modernizing nation-state because it contained the unwanted elements of magic and supernaturalism, its reemergence in the late twentieth century paved the way for the rise of its successor, xiuzhen fantasy. As a type of magical arts fiction, xiuzhen reinvents Daoist alchemy and other “superstitious” practices to build a cultivation world which does not escape but engages with the dazzling reality of digital technology, neoliberal governance, and global capitalism. In this fantastic world, the divide of magic and science breaks down; religion, defined not by faith but embodied practice, serves as the organizing center of society, economy, and politics. Moreover, the subject of martial arts fiction that challenged the sovereignty of the nation-state has evolved into the neoliberal homo economicus and its non-/anti-capitalist alternatives. Reading four exemplary xiuzhen novels, Journeys into the Ephemeral (Piaomiao zhilv 飄渺之旅), The Buddha Belongs to the Dao (Foben shidao 佛本是道), Spirit Roaming (Shenyou 神遊), and Immortality Cultivation 40K (Xiuzhen siwannian 修真四萬年), this article argues that xiuzhen fantasy provides a platform on which the postsocialist generation seek to orient themselves in the labyrinth of contemporary capitalism by rethinking the modernist triad of religion, science, and superstition
