    Bank capital regulation, the lending channel and business cycles

    This paper develops a Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) model to study how the instability of the banking sector can amplify and propagate business cycles. The model builds on Bernanke, Gertler and Gilchrist (BGG) (1999), who consider credit demand friction due to agency cost, but it deviates from BGG in that financial intermediaries have to share aggregate risk with entrepreneurs, and therefore bear uncertainty in their loan portfolios. Unexpected aggregate shocks will drive loan default rate away from expected, and have an impact on both firm and bank's balance sheet via the financial contract. Low bank capital position can create strong credit supply contraction, and have a significant effect on business cycle dynamics. --Bank capital regulation,banking instability,financial friction,business cycle

    Financial frictions, monetary policy and business cycles

    This dissertation consists of three essays, which study the implication of financial frictions in business cycles and monetary policy making. The first essay develops a Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) model to study how the instability of the banking sector can amplify and propagate business cycles. Model simulations show that in an economic down turn, in addition to credit demand contraction induced by low firm net worth, low bank capital position can create strong credit supply contraction, and have a quantitatively significant effect on business cycle dynamics. The second essay studies the optimal Taylor-type monetary policy rules based on the model developed in the first chapter and find that with interest rate smoothing, 'leaning against the wind' can significantly dampen the procyclicality of financial distortions, and increase the welfare of the economy. The third chapter examines the role of households frugality in a financial crisis and finds that higher savings by more frugal households provide an important cushion for the fall in private investment funding

    Leaning Against the Wind: Macroprudential Policy

    Abstract In recent years, macroprudential policy has become an increasingly active policy area. Many countries have adopted it as a tool to safeguard financial stability, in particular to deal with the credit and asset price cycles driven by global capital flows. This paper reviews the use of key macroprudential instruments and capital flow measures in 13 Asian economies and 33 economies in other regions since 2000, and constructs various macroprudential policy indices, aggregating sub-indices on key instruments. Asian economies appear to have made greater use of macroprudential tools, especially housing-related measures, than their counterparts in other regions. The effects of macroprudential policy are then assessed through an event study, cross-country macro panel regressions and bank-level micro panel regressions. The analysis suggests that macroprudential policy and capital flow measures have helped curb housing price growth, equity flows, credit growth, and bank leverage. The instruments that have been particularly effective in this regard include loan-to-value ratio caps, housing tax measures, and foreign currency-related measures.     Tadalafil-loaded PLGA microspheres for pulmonary administration: preparation and evaluation

    Tadalafil, a long-acting PED-5 inhibitor, is commonly used for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). However, its efficacy and clinical application are severely limited by the poor water solubility, low bioavailability and a series adverse effects (e.g. headaches, indigestion). In this study, tadalafil was prepared and loaded into biodegradable PLGA (poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)) microspheres (TDF-PLGA-MS) via emulsification-solvent evaporation. The resulting microspheres were processed into pulmonary inhalant by freeze drying. The TDF-PLGA-MS was spherical and uniform, with an average particle diameter ~10.29 μm. The encapsulation efficiency and drug loading yield of TDF‑PLGA‑MS were 81.68% and 8.52%, respectively. The investigation of micromeritics showed that the TDF‑PLGA‑MS had low moisture content. The fluidity of powders was relatively good. The aerodynamic diameter and emptying rate of microspheres powders were 3.92 μm and 95.41%, respectively. Therefore, the microspheres powders were easy to be atomized, and can meet the requirements of pulmonary administration. In vitro release results showed that the microspheres group released slowly. The cumulative release in 24 h and 10 d was 46.87% and 84.06%, respectively. The in vitro release profile of TDF‑PLGA‑MS was in accordance with the Weibull model. The results of Pharmacokinetics showed that tadalafil from microspheres slowly released into the blood after intratracheal instillation. The pulmonary drug residue in 0.5 h was 3.5 times compared with solution group. The residual concentration in lung after 10d was still higher than that of solution group in 48 h. The t1/2β and MRT0-∞ were 3.10 times and 3.96 times that of solution group, respectively. Moreover, the Cmax and AUC of drug residues in lung were 3.48 times and 16.36 times that of solution group, respectively. The results of tissue distribution showed that the Re in lung was 16.358, which indicated the lung targeting. In conclusion, the TDF-PLGA-MS for pulmonary administration in this study can significantly improve the pulmonary targeting, increase efficacy of tadalafil and reduce other non-target organs toxicity. This study will have an important clinical significance for PAH patients who need long-term drug therapy

    Repeat Induced Abortion among Chinese Women Seeking Abortion: Two Cross Sectional Studies

    Background: In China, there were about 9.76 million induced abortions in 2019, 50% of which were repeat abortions. Understanding the tendency of repeat induced abortion and identifying its related factors is needed to develop prevention strategies. Methods: Two hospital-based cross-sectional surveys were conducted from 2005–2007 and 2013–2016 in 24 and 90 hospitals, respectively. The survey included women who sought an induced abortion within 12 weeks of pregnancy. The proportion of repeat induced abortions by adjusting the covariates through propensity score matching was compared between the two surveys, and the zero-inflated negative binomial regression model was established to identify independent factors of repeat induced abortion. Results: Adjusting the age, occupation, education, marital status and number of children, the proportion of repeat induced abortions in the second survey was found to be low (60.28% vs. 11.11%), however the unadjusted proportion was high in the second survey (44.97% vs. 51.54%). The risk of repeat induced abortion was higher among married women and women with children [ORadj and 95% CI: 0.31 (0.20, 0.49) and 0.08 (0.05, 0.13)]; the risk among service industry staff was higher when compared with unemployed women [ORadj and 95% CI: 0.19 (0.07, 0.54)]; women with a lower education level were at a higher risk of a repeat induced abortion (ORadj \u3c 1). Compared with women under the age of 20, women in other higher age groups had a higher frequency of repeat induced abortions (IRadj: 1.78, 2.55, 3.27, 4.01, and 3.93, separately); the frequency of women with lower education levels was higher than those with a university or higher education level (IRadj \u3e 1); the repeat induced abortion frequency of married women was 0.93 (0.90, 0.98) when compared to the frequency of unmarried women, while the frequency of women with children was 1.17 (1.10, 1.25) of childless women; the induced abortion frequency of working women was about 60–95% with that of unemployed women. Conclusions: The repeat induced abortion proportion was lower than 10 years ago. Induced abortion seekers who were married, aged 20 to 30 years and with a lower education level were more likely to repeat induced abortions

    A trajectory outlier detection method based on variational auto-encoder

    Trajectory outlier detection can identify abnormal phenomena from a large number of trajectory data, which is helpful to discover or predict potential traffic risks. In this work, we proposed a trajectory outlier detection model based on variational auto-encoder. First, the model encodes the trajectory data as parameters of distribution functions based on the statistical characteristics of urban traffic. Then, an auto-encoder network is built and trained. The training goal of the auto-encoder network is to maximize the generation probability of original trajectories when decoding. Once the model training is completed, we can detect the trajectory outlier by the difference between a trajectory and the trajectory generated by the model. The advantage of the proposed model is that it only needs to compute the difference between the original trajectory and the trajectory generated by the model when detecting the trajectory outlier, which greatly reduces the amount of calculation and makes the model very suitable for real-time detection scenarios. In addition, the distance threshold between the abnormal trajectory and the normal trajectory can be set by referring to the proportion of the abnormal trajectory in the training data set, which eliminates the difficulty of setting the threshold manually and makes the model more convenient to be applied in different actual scenes. In terms of effect, the proposed model has achieved more than 95% in accuracy, which is better than the two typical density-based and classification-based detection methods, and also better than the methods based on machine learning in recent years. In terms of efficiency, the model has good convergence in the training phase and the training time increases slowly with the data scale, which is better than or as the same as the comparison methods

    The relationship between atrial fibrillation and NLRP3 inflammasome: a gut microbiota perspective

    Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common clinical arrhythmia whose pathogenesis has not been fully elucidated, and the inflammatory response plays an important role in the development of AF. The inflammasome is an important component of innate immunity and is involved in a variety of pathophysiologic processes. The NLRP3 inflammasome is by far the best studied and validated inflammasome that recognizes multiple pathogens through pattern recognition receptors of innate immunity and mediates inflammatory responses through activation of Caspase-1. Several studies have shown that NLRP3 inflammasome activation contributes to the onset and development of AF. Ecological dysregulation of the gut microbiota has been associated with the development of AF, and some evidence suggests that gut microbiota components, functional byproducts, or metabolites may induce or exacerbate the development of AF by directly or indirectly modulating the NLRP3 inflammasome. In this review, we report on the interconnection of NLRP3 inflammasomes and gut microbiota and whether this association is related to the onset and persistence of AF. We discuss the potential value of pharmacological and dietary induction in the management of AF in the context of the association between the NLRP3 inflammasome and gut microbiota. It is hoped that this review will lead to new therapeutic targets for the future management of AF

    Loss of Microstructural Integrity in the Limbic-Subcortical Networks for Acute Symptomatic Traumatic Brain Injury

    Previous studies reported discrepant white matter diffusivity in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) on the base of Glasgow Coma Scale, which are unreliable for some TBI severity indicators and the frequency of missing documentation in the medical record. In the present study, we adopted the Mayo classification system for TBI severity. In this system, the mTBI is also divided into two groups as "probable and symptomatic" TBI. We aimed to investigate altered microstructural integrity in symptomatic acute TBI (<1 week) by using tract-based spatial statics (TBSS) approach. A total of 12 patients and 13 healthy volunteers were involved and underwent MRI scans including conventional scan, and SWI and DTI. All the patients had no visible lesions by using conventional and SWI neuroimaging techniques, while showing widespread declines in the fractional anisotropy (FA) of gray matter and white matter throughout the TBSS skeleton, particularly in the limbic-subcortical structures. By contrast, symptomatic TBI patients showed no significant enhanced changes in FA compared to the healthy controls. A better understanding of the acute changes occurring following symptomatic TBI may increase our understanding of neuroplasticity and continuing degenerative change, which, in turn, may facilitate advances in management and intervention
