A Systematic Literature Review of the Impact of Self-Regulation Intervention Strategies on Social Communication Outcomes of Individuals on the Autism Spectrum
Research Question What were the effects on social communication outcomes of children with ASD who received intervention targeting self regulation compared to those who did not? Background Social communication is a key area of deficit associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and social communication abilities are closely aligned with social outcomes such as appropriate social interaction and formation of social bonds for individuals on the spectrum. Emotional regulation and self management of social behaviors are core capacities underpinning social communication skills (Prizant & Wetherby, 1990). These skills can be characterized by the intrinsic and extrinsic ability to modulate emotion and monitor behavior in various social environments. For the purposes of the present review these skills are referred to as self regulation or emotional regulation. Individuals with ASD who experience emotional regulation difficulties may also experience negative impact on development of social communication skills. Therefore, interventions that target emotional and self regulation may have a unique advantage in addressing social communication outcomes in individuals with ASD. To our knowledge, systematic reviews investigating the relationship of social communication and emotional regulation have focused primarily on measuring emotional regulation in individuals with ASD. Methods A comprehensive search of PubMed, PsychInfo, CINHAL, Cochrane Library, and ComDisDom was conducted using the search terms (1) ASD or autism or Autism Spectrum disorder or Pervasive developmental disorder or Aspergers (2) self regulation or emotion regulation or attention regulation or sensory regulation or sensory processing (3) therapy or treatment or program or management or intervention. 283 articles were found using these databases, and 5 were eligible for review after abstract and full text reviews were conducted for relevance to social communication outcomes. Studies were excluded if the intervention did not primarily focus on self-regulation and/or if results did not report on social communication outcomes. Each article was appraised for evidence quality using a form. Data extraction focused on the self-regulation intervention targets (i.e. emotion regulation, self-management of behavior) and the reported change on participant social communication behaviors and skills. Anticipated Results Results of the current systematic review revealed considerable variation in published reports on intervention strategies targeting emotional regulation in individuals with ASD that track social communication outcomes. The articles appraised in this review vary in terms of study design, sample size, and methods utilized to address target self regulation and social communication skills. The current review included four case series studies and one randomized control trial. Preliminary results suggest positive social communication outcomes for participants engaged in intervention programs targeting emotional regulation and self management of behaviors. Appraisal of intervention details, specific outcomes and quality of included studies will be further discussed. Discussion The suggested relationship between emotional/self regulation skills and social communication may have important implications on goal development and intervention strategies employed in support social communication development in individuals with ASD

The loess deposits of Buca Dei Corvi section (Central Italy): Revisited
Loess deposits have been described in the past for the upper section of Buca Dei Corvi succession (Central Italy). In this paper the depositswere re-analysed to clarify the depositional environment and to attempt a paleoclimate reconstruction. Two radiocarbon dates on pedogenic carbonate constrain the ages to the Late Glacial, and are consistent with previous OSL dating of the top of the succession. The non-marine mollusc assemblage shows typical character of cold and dry climatic conditions, testified by strong oligotypical composition. Mineralogy and geochemistry of the sediments indicate the abundant presence of exotic quartz mineral which can be explained only by wind transport. Probably, wind transportwas also responsible of deposition of carbonatewhich then dissolved and re-precipitated producing pedogenic concretions. Stable isotopes (13C/12C and 18O/16O ratios) of the concretions are consistent with a climate drier than present conditions, with an environment characterized by sparse vegetation
STRATIGRAPHIC ARCHITECTURE AND QUATERNARY EVOLUTION OF THE AGRI INTERMONTANE BASIN (SOUTHERN APENNINES, ITALY)
The Agri Valley is a NW-SE oriented intermontane basin located in the axial zone of the Southern Apennines mountain belt, filled by Quaternary continental deposits. Faults responsible for the basin formation, mainly oriented according to N120\ub0\uf0b110\ub0 and N50\ub0-55\ub0 trends, dissected the Southern Apennines fold and thrust belt and determined the sedimentary evolution of the basin during Pleistocene. The basin consists of three tectonically controlled and diachronous depocenters, bounded by WNW-ESE and NE-SW faults; outcrops occur in the south-eastern one, which was deeply dissected by the drainage network during the Late Pleistocene-Holocene. In this area, four allostratigraphic units represented by lacuo-palustrine and fan-delta, axial braid-plain and alluvial fan deposits accumulated in response to changes in intrabasinal subsidence, catchment relief, regional tectonics and climate. These units form the Agri Valley Allogroup, up to 100 m thick. Their erosional boundaries can be associated with preserved weathering profiles and/or paleosols. The latter developed at the top of alluvial fans (fed from both the northern and southern sides of the basin) and on the NW-SE axial alluvial plain, during geomorphological stability stages.
Physical stratigraphy, facies associations, architectural elements and geopedological characterization (mainly micromorphological) are the key to decipher the sedimentary evolution of the basin and the contemporaneous palaeogeographic and climatic changes. This information, in combination with OSL, 14C, AFTA dating methods, provide insights into the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the area during the Pleistocene
Expectations among older immigrants from the former Yugoslavia when meeting expectations of the meeting with nurses in Sweden -a qualitative interview study
Today's society is becoming increasingly multicultural which places greater demands on both the care system and the nurses involved. The nurses’ lack of knowledge incompetence of various regarding eventual cultural differences can create cultural clashes and misunderstandings that can result in and improper care. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expectations of the elder immigrants, from the former Yugoslavia, when meeting in their meetings with the nurses in Sweden professionally, Method: The study is a qualitative study, with an inductive approach, and is based on six interviews with elderly immigrants who originally came from the former Yugoslavia. Personal contact was made with the informants to participate in the investigation by Serbian / Bosnian / Croatian / Macedonian associations in southern Sweden where these compounds are. The author went to the unions and informed about the study and those who wanted to participate contacted the author. The collected materials were systematically analysed with using content analysis. Results The findings that the older immigrants expecting the meeting with the nurse are presented in the following five categories. To obtain confirmation of the expressed needs, Empathetic contact, Communication and dialogue in the meeting, Respect for their values and views on health and Safety. Conclusion: The care of older patients with a different cultural background requires both cultural competence and a professional approach. The nurses need to be able to identify patient care needs, and in this special situation case be able to cope with even pass the eventual language barriers, in order to and reach the patient and understand their needs
